Perks and Programs

We asked American Fidelity Assurance Company to share a few programs they feel really capture what's unique about their workplace. Here is what they had to say.

  • Dress for Your Day: American Fidelity lets Colleagues choose the appropriate wardrobe for their day based on their schedule. That may mean wearing a suit on Monday for a presentation, jeans on Tuesday when you just have a department meeting, sweats at home on Wednesday (or if you're in the office, your Great Place to Work T-shirt to celebrate Great Place to Work Wednesday), business casual for meetings on Thursday and jeans and a T-shirt on Friday to celebrate Chari-tee Day and donate to that month’s Colleague-selected charity.
  • Pension and 401(k): Like just about every other large company, American Fidelity offers a 401(k) with matching opportunities. Unlike most companies, we also provide a Company-funded pension plan to give Colleagues an extra boost to their retirement savings. Plus, Colleagues can earn even more for their 401(k) through incentive opportunities and can save for retirement through their Health Savings Accounts as well, including earning up to $1,000 in wellness incentives for their HSAs.
  • Career Development: American Fidelity has a dedicated career development specialist who helps Colleagues create a career plan, work toward their career goals and prepare for interviews for other positions in the Company. The Company has paid out more than $1 million through the tuition reimbursement program, which allows Colleagues to go back to school even for degrees and courses not directly related to their jobs. Colleagues can take on-site college courses in addition to the plethora of courses available from the Training team, receive time and financial assistance to complete industry certifications and are encouraged to serve on boards of professional organizations.
  • Tuition Reimbursement and Professional Development Opportunities: The Company has paid out more than $1 million through the tuition reimbursement program, which allows Colleagues to go back to school even for degrees and courses not directly related to their jobs. Colleagues can take on-site college courses in addition to the plethora of courses available from the Training team, receive time and financial assistance to complete industry certifications and are encouraged to serve on boards of professional organizations.
  • Work/Life Balance: Colleagues can grab breakfast and lunch at the on-site restaurant, attend group exercise classes or work out with a personal trainer at the on-site gym, get their car washed on-site, buy stamps or discounted movie and theme park tickets and more to help them save time and money. They can get a massage on-site and visit the on-site medical clinic, which provides wellness check-ups and coaching, allergy shot administration, well woman exams, diabetes management, depression screening and treatment, chronic headache treatment, cold/flu/sinus infection treatment, family planning and more!
  • Mobile Workforce: Nearly 90 percent of Colleagues opt for flexible schedules and more than 85 percent of Colleagues at the corporate headquarters work from home at least 20 percent of the time. The Company's headquarters in Oklahoma City is entirely wireless, allowing Colleagues to easily move around within the building or even work from the patio.
  • Community Opportunities: American Fidelity focuses on serving the people who build our communities including teachers and municipal workers through our products and services, and that carries over into caring for our own community. Each month money is raised for a different charity nominated by Colleagues. Individual donations are matched and paid volunteer time is offered; Colleagues use Company time to tutor at a local elementary school; annual campaigns are held for the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma, Allied Arts and United Way; on-site blood drives are offered and more!
  • Events: AF’s annual Famboree gives Colleagues a chance to show off the kids and grandkids to their coworkers and enjoy celebrating with both their home and work families. Bring Your Kids to Work day helps the kids and grandkids of Colleagues learn more about AF and what their family member does. The annual Service Awards luncheon honors long-term service. They also celebrate throughout the year with food trucks or ice cream, pizza parties, lunch celebrations, painting classes, inflatable games or even a pets day where animals from a local shelter visited and found new homes
  • Incentives: When the Company performs well, both Colleagues and our Customers win. Colleagues are updated monthly on the overall Company performance and how that relates to incentives. Colleagues can also receive a discretionary contribution of 1.5 percent of their salary to their 401(k), in addition to other incentive opportunities.

How to Get Hired

We asked American Fidelity Assurance Company for some inside information on how to get hired at the organization. Here is what they had to say.

What key characteristics tell you a prospective employee will be a great fit for your company?

American Fidelity seeks high-performing, motivated professionals to contribute to our Company. Our environment focuses on collaboration and openness, so we search for candidates who are team players. We take pride in having a diverse workforce committed to exploring new ideas. We look for candidates who want to make a difference and focus on serving others. Characteristics we always look for in Colleagues include strong communication and problem-solving skills. We also evaluate whether candidates share our Core Values of being Always Fair, Focused, Flexible, Future-oriented and Financially Secure and who will focus on making things easier for our Customers.

What can prospective employees do to get your attention?

Our recruiters look for candidates who demonstrate key soft skills during the preliminary screening, testing and interview phase. Use your resume and cover letter to showcase your collaborative nature, flexibility and interpersonal communication skills. Those are the items that set great candidates apart from those who just meet the basic requirements of the position. The key is showing how you’ve used these soft skills to succeed in your career rather than just stating them. How have you collaborated in previous positions to meet Customer needs? How were you flexible in dealing with change? Since we have a highly collaborative environment, our hiring process typically includes a team interview, where the whole team may be involved. This gives both the team and the candidates a chance to see how they will fit and if they will be able to work as a team.

Are there any positions or types of candidates you are particularly focused on hiring in this coming year?

While we have a variety of positions open at any time, some of the positions where we expect the most growth are sales and IT. We hire account managers nationwide to consult with Customers about their benefits options. These Colleagues earn salary plus commissions and work with an established worksite Customer base of either education or a combination of health care providers, municipalities and auto dealers. There are always new technologies and new consumer expectations. IT has to deliver faster than ever, and the technology will change at an exponentially faster rate. We look for candidates who fit our culture and have a passion for technology. People choose technology as a career path because they love it – they live and breathe technology. We want the candidates who love what they do. Our IT team plans to hire software developers, database developers, data analysts/business intelligence and technical infrastructure specialists.
