Perks and Programs

We asked Workiva Inc. to share a few programs they feel really capture what's unique about their workplace. Here is what they had to say.

  • Health is Wealth: Responding to our employees’ requests to help them work and live more healthily, in 2016 we implemented a healthy living initiative, with sessions for employees to learn new ways to live a healthy lifestyle (e.g., work-life balance, healthy eating, sustainability). After a positive reception at our Ames HQ in 2014, the Dallas and Seattle offices received their own fleets of bikes, allowing employees to get a bit of exercise or cruise around town during free time. We also continue to work with local gyms to offer discounts for employees, and in December we partnered with 24 Hour Fitness to offer discounted membership plans for employees who work remotely and don’t have access to our onsite office gyms.
  • Diversity and Inclusion Committee: Workiva cultivates a work environment that encourages fairness, teamwork and respect among all employees. We value diversity of backgrounds, beliefs and interests, and we recognize them as an important source of intellectual thought, varied perspective and innovation. We are firmly committed to maintaining a work atmosphere in which people of diverse backgrounds, beliefs and interests may grow personally and professionally. Fostering a diverse workplace provides an inclusive environment for our employees, thereby increasing engagement, empowerment and satisfaction. We believe this environment best positions us to meet the needs of our customers.
  • Part of Our Communities: We constantly look for ways to engage in the communities where we operate and live. This allows our teams to bond outside of the office and feel great about giving back to fantastic charities and worthy causes. We participate in blood drives in several of our offices, including Dallas, Ames, Scottsdale, and Sault Ste. Marie. In Ames alone last year, we had a total of 63 blood donors registered and 7 double red cell donations, which helped save the lives of 142 hospital patients. Our Boulder office supports the Harvest of Hope food pantry. Employees on our sales team donated 66 pairs of shoes to children living in poverty in Los Cabos, Mexico and 114 days of child care at Los Niños del Capitan for low-income families. And these are just some of the causes our employees champion and support throughout the year.
  • Investing in STEM: In 2014, Iowa Lt. Gov, Kim Reynolds worked with Workiva leadership to be a partner in STEM [Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics] education in the state. In 2015, Workiva launched The Learn Center, an in-house Learning Management System that provides a platform for employees to develop management skills, become proficient in using our Wdesk platform, and complete compliance-related training. In one year, employees spent 21,327 hours learning soft, technical, and leadership skills. Employees use these skills to mentor technology students by participating in "hackathons" that help students collaborate on software projects. Workiva also donates time and resources to start-up incubators, student STEM groups, and organizations that promote STEM education for young women and minorities.
  • Benefitting Our Employees: Workiva employees always have access to the latest technology in order to do their jobs the best they can, from wherever they work best. The corporate headquarters is a state-of-the-art facility with top of the line amenities, and this year renovations were made in the Chicago, Dallas, Seattle, and Scottsdale offices with the employees quality of life in mind. Also this year, Workiva developed “Managing the Workiva Way,” a committee that helps employees develop leadership skills with a focus on communication, decision making, and coaching. We introduced a $500 rollover to FSA, introduced Patient Care (a patient advocacy program) and added TeleDoc to our heath insurance plan - which helps employees better manage their resources.
  • Parental Leave Policy: In January of 2016, after a recommendation from our Human Asset Management advisory group, we expanded our parental leave policy to 15 days paid leave. All new Workiva parents - biological or adoptive, male or female - can take 15 paid days within the first six months of the birth or adoption of a child, without having to dip into any vacation time. Biological mothers may take 15 days of fully-paid paternal leave in addition to time taken for the Family and Medical Leave Act and short-term disability.
  • Town Hall Meetings With CEO: In an effort to encourage transparency and promote our culture across the company, Workiva CEO, Matt Rizai, holds open forum meetings at each of our 16 offices, where employees are free to ask him questions about the company and share their ideas.
  • Intern Program: We offer paid internships throughout the year for undergraduate and graduate students. Since school comes first, we offer flexible hours during the school year and full-time opportunities during the summer. Interns participate in company-wide events throughout the year and become a significant, contributing part of our company culture. Many graduating seniors will stay on as full time employees.
  • Human Asset Management Program: Workiva has taken an approach of Human Asset Management (HAM) rather than traditional HR. Our "NO HR" approach is to ensure action and programs are not driven from the top, but rather driven by employees in all levels and areas of Workiva. Workiva has established a results-driven culture that empowers employees to take action along with accountability for the actions taken. The HAM approach engages employees, empowers employees and encourages employees to voice their opinions and suggestions. Workiva works to back up this grassroots effort by demonstrating that the employee voice is heard and acted upon. Employees put the company values and mission to work in their decision making and actions.
  • Discounts: We have corporate car rental and cell phone discounts available to all employees with several major vendors. Employees are able to utilize pre-purchased taxi vouchers while traveling or while at a work-related event. Additionally, we have negotiated discounted memberships with several fitness centers in locations that have a significant Workiva employee population. In some offices, we have provided fitness equipment for our employees on site. Free breakfast and snacks are provided at all offices at no charge, and our corporate headquarters houses a gourmet cafe and offers daily lunches at an affordable price for all employees. Access to the corporate discount information is available on our intranet.
