Perks and Programs

We asked Workiva Inc. to share a few programs they feel really capture what's unique about their workplace. Here is what they had to say.

  • Workiva Day: On March 17 every year, we as a company, celebrate our successes and achievements. This day is known as “Workiva Day.” Some of our past achievements include releasing our first SEC reporting solution, creating new ways for our customers to work, kicking off our intranet, Connect, to all employees, launching our main platform Wdesk, becoming a publicly traded company and most recently, celebrating the 3,000 customer mark! Workiva Day is a chance for all employees to celebrate these momentous milestones. Workiva celebrates this day by offering free company lunches at all locations, snacks and beverages throughout the day, t-shirts, insulated tumblers, merchandise giveaways, multiple $1,000 cash drawings for all full-time employees, photo contests, pinatas, ping pong tournaments, games, cookie decorating and more.
  • Customer Love Walls: Many companies say “our customers love us,” but can they prove it? At Workiva, we can! If our 95% customer satisfaction score and Net Promoter Score of 81 doesn't say enough, then our Customer Love walls literally spell it out. Whether it's a word cloud posted at an office entrance or a thank you message to a specific employee or team, we take this positive feedback, print it in Workiva green and post it for employees to see. One of our mottos at Workiva is “We Love Our Customers…And They Love Us Back.” Customer Love walls are a visual showcase of the impact our product and our employees have had on our customers.
  • Welcome Screens: To support our welcoming and inclusive environment, we have more than 30 company Wallboards throughout our offices that flash a welcome screen for each employee visiting from a different office. When an employee badges into the office, the badge reader communicates with other internal systems to determine if the employee is a visitor to that office or not. If they are a visitor, a welcome screen is automatically created, sharing a picture of the employee and details of the specific location and department they represent. Workiva employees are encouraged to proactively seek out and say hello to visitors coming from other offices. This program has resulted in a marked increase of engagement levels between employees, and it supports our inclusive company culture.
  • Makers Challenge: The Maker’s Challenge is an annual event hosted by and for Workivans where a committee creates various tasks for teams of employees to complete. The event can span one day, or even a series of days. Departmental diversity, inter-office membership and intern inclusion is rewarded in each challenge. Past event samples include: tallest structure to hold a basketball using 25 paper towel rolls and a roll of tape, best entree with a box of Mac and Cheese and only 3 other ingredients, build and throw a paper airplane the farthest, create a video replicating a popular movie, and most creative pancake using food coloring. The winner is determined by volunteer judges who provide scores using a points system. The winning team receives company-wide recognition.
  • Workiva Weekly: Workiva Weekly is a fun, interactive way for employees to stay up-to-date on company news and activities. Each video episode is hosted by a member of the Corporate Communications team and highlights four to five topics presented in an engaging format and delivered to the inbox of every employee. A variety of subject-matter experts, employees and volunteers are interviewed for each episode, which makes Workiva Weekly a great tool to help connect all of our employees in different office locations and combine entertainment with company information. By entering a keyword (found on the screen at the end of the episode) into a submission form, employees are entered into a drawing for a free t-shirt.
  • First Friends: We believe someone’s first-day experience plays a large role in determining how much they enjoy their position, if they feel like they are a part of Workiva culture, and how successful they will be at job responsibilities. The First Friends Program is a way to welcome new hires on day one, but it also helps acclimate them to their new teammates and culture. First Friends complete an e-learning module before they participate in the program. Many activities are location and team-specific, which is why the First Friend is so important to our new hires. By providing a local First Friend, they are more easily integrated into the culture as they have a steward to help them become familiar with their day-to-day work and environment at Workiva.
  • Affinity Groups: So far, Workivians have established six affinity groups. An affinity group is an employee-led group formed around a shared interest or common goal with the purpose of supporting its members and cultivating a diverse and inclusive workspace. All employees are welcome to join an affinity group(s) regardless if they directly identify with the group or not. Each group serves to support the members through resources and as advocates for their group members. The groups provide a focused lens to evaluate policies and procedures for underrepresented groups. They help to establish new policies and procedures to enhance the inclusive environment we strive to embrace at Workiva. Affinity groups have monthly meetings and lively discussions on current issues while building camaraderie through various events.
  • Employee Learning Week: Workiva prides itself on sharing knowledge among peers. Our First Annual Employee Learning Week encouraged employees to take advantage of the wealth of knowledge available within the company and schedule time to participate in knowledge sharing sessions, training courses, and self-development opportunities. We recognize that learning and development is more important now than ever before. Employee Learning week highlighted the important connection between learning and achieving organizational results. Our rich, knowledge-sharing culture enabled us to implement this week as a way to help develop a knowledgeable and highly skilled workforce. Throughout the week, over 800 participants got involved in 22 unique live learning activities.
  • HAMbassadors: HAMbassadors are employee volunteers representing every team and location. Their role is key in nurturing our culture of openness and transparency by serving as a communication conduit for their team and location. They share information regarding programs and initiatives through the channels that work best for their team. HAMbassadors direct questions, ideas, or concerns to the appropriate Workiva resource. HAMbassadors work to foster an environment of teamwork and camaraderie by leading and supporting involvement in team, office, or company activities and initiatives. They make sure everyone is informed and knows how to get involved with fun social events. HAMbassadors bring people together to create planning committees for company events or activities and communicate about these events to their teammates creating a sense of inclusion and excitement among departments.
  • Moonshot Challenge: The Moonshot Challenge is a fun, collaborative competition for Workiva interns to pitch creative business ideas for software. Interns form groups of 2-4 people. While working closely with an employee advisor, they research and formulate an idea into a pitch. The pitch is a high-level idea and it addresses what problem the team is solving, who it is for, and why they should buy it. All teams present their pitch in the first round to a selection committee. The selection committee narrows the groups down to five. The five groups then present in a second round to a final selection panel made up of executives who determine the first, second, and third place winners. Winners receive cash prizes or company store credit.
