Perks and Programs

We asked Wegmans Food Markets, Inc. to share a few programs they feel really capture what's unique about their workplace. Here is what they had to say.

  • Fun, Family Culture: Wegmans has been a family company for over 100 years, and is truly a company of families. We have been able to build this strong family culture by living our values and putting our people first- offering pay, benefits, career development and support that outpace industry averages. Beyond benefits, our employees love what they do, creating an exciting work environment. Whether working alongside family members, or friends that begin to feel like family, our employees build trusting relationships with coworkers and customers alike which helps sustain our happy, welcoming culture.
  • Listening/Empowerment: Wegmans employees are empowered to make decisions that improve their work and benefit our company. We invest in various programs to put our employees’ ideas into action. Open Door Days, Huddles, Focus Groups and a two-way Q&A blog with our SVP of Operations help us listen to our people closest to the work and the customer, driving continuous improvement. Our Innovation Teams, made up of employees across various areas of the company, work on changing or introducing new programs by listening to employee ideas, developing and testing concepts, and establishing best practices before implementation. This engagement with each other makes work more exciting and meaningful, whether in stores, corporate, distribution or manufacturing.
  • Flexible Scheduling: Flexible scheduling and work/life balance are top reasons people come to work and stay at Wegmans. Store locations have more than 500 employees in 30+ departments, allowing our 24x7 operation tremendous flexibility to accommodate changes in student schedules, caring for a sick family member, and activities and personal obligations. We are a family company who wants our employees to have a healthy work/life balance so they can be their best.
  • Promotions and Learning Opportunities: To help preserve our values-based culture as our company grows, we promote from within whenever possible through an internal Job Posting program. New opportunities across store operations, corporate, manufacturing and distribution are posted twice a week; allowing our growing team of 48,000 employees the opportunity to submit interest to grow laterally or vertically into new roles. Over the last year, 25% of our employees received a promotional job opportunity or a lateral learning assignment.
  • Employee Development for ALL: We invest more than $50 million each year in training and development for our people. Employees grow knowledge through: department universities, online training, workshops, Dale Carnegie, on-the-job experiences, food rallies, cooking techniques, traveling to supplier partners, and talent development programs like internships, management trainee and leadership development programs. In addition, senior leaders at all locations mentor high potential employees and develop diverse representation for all levels of our organization. With all programs, the one-to-one relationships between managers and employees allows us to invest in each employee personally, ensuring development for all.
  • Discounts and Digital Coupons: Wegmans employees have access to hundreds of community discounts on movies, amusement parks, technology, gym memberships and more, saving thousands of dollars each year! Employees also are eligible for in-store beverage discounts and various digital coupons for employee-only offers. These unique offers begin as soon as an employee joins our family- with free products following orientation, a free lunch during the month of their work anniversary, and free cake during their birthday month! Employees welcoming a new addition to their family also receive 3 months of new arrival benefits with discounts on produce and prepared foods purchases, free wipes and diapers.
  • EAP and Financial Wellness: Whether working through a problem or celebrating a life change, our Employee Assistance Program helps our people manage life events every day. We provide 24/7 confidential assessment of personal situations, short-term counseling and coaching (6 FREE sessions), referrals to community resources, education on various topics, and follow up. We offer online Work/Life referral services for parenting, child care and elder care, and wide-ranging financial services and legal assistance for all employees, including unlimited, free telephonic financial consultation with a professional financial counselor, an annual certified financial planning consultation, and a free 30-minute consultation with an attorney. This year, through a focused financial wellness campaign, we drove higher enrollment in our 401(k) benefit to help our people plan for a financially secure future.
  • Wellness: Our company's mission is to help people live healthier, better lives through food. Employee wellness programs abound including free health screenings, tobacco cessation, subsidized Weight Watchers, and a variety of food/nutritional programs! Collaborative, “get-moving” events, like yoga, Couch-to-5k, Kickball and Zumba stir up fun and camaraderie. Regional nutritionists and in-store executive chefs offer expert advice for making healthy meals easy, and pharmacists provide free blood pressure and cardiovascular wellness programs to help employees stay on track with their health goals.
  • Community and Sustainability Initiatives: Our people are proud of the difference they make through their employment at Wegmans. Whether raising millions of dollars annually for hunger relief, reclaiming millions of pounds of food from our stores and distributing it to local food banks, or contributing their time and talent through Wegmans sponsored events and programs, our people know our mission, values and family ownership gives them an opportunity to make a lasting, positive impact on the world. In addition to community initiatives, Wegmans people are also helping to lead industry efforts in sustainability, through Zero Waste initiatives, Carbon Footprint Reduction and Sustainable products and packaging.
