Perks and Programs

We asked Altar'd State to share a few programs they feel really capture what's unique about their workplace. Here is what they had to say.

  • Bring your Dog to Work: Vicky O'Neill doesn’t go to work at Altar'd State headquarters near Knoxville, Tennessee alone. Her Shih Tzu, Bubba, is always by her side, sitting at Vicky’s desk while she’s on calls and attending meetings throughout the day. Bubba is one of more than 50 dogs at Altar'd State headquarters thanks to the company’s dog-friendly work policy. Altar'd State allows dogs to join their owners in the office and the dogs are just like part of the family! Dogs in the workplace provide more social support for employees, as well as more opportunities for coworkers to interact in a positive setting. Our associates who own dogs do not have to worry about their dog being home alone all day. We even have our own dog park for our furry friends to enjoy throughout the day. One candidate even brought a dog to n interview!
  • Coprodeli - Peru Missions: It all began when a young lady informed our Chairman & CEO that after she completed her current year of school (around middle school age in the US), she wouldn’t have anywhere else to go to school. Altar’d State’s continued partnership with Coprodeli Peru is very unique to our brand and is something that associates get very excited about and are actively involved in. To date, Altar’d State has had the honor and privilege of funding the building of 5 schools so children in impoverished areas are able to continue their education, with no plans of slowing down. Additionally, over 259 children in Peruvian communities are being sponsored by Altar’d State associates either through company assigned sponsorships or payroll reduction sponsorships. We strongly believe that every child in the world deserves a chance to be successful, and we are doing our best to ensure that becomes a reality for these children.
  • Mission Monday: Mission Monday is a program that was founded shortly after the company began, with the goal of fulfilling a gap in the retail industry. 10% of net proceeds in all stores across the chain, are donated to a local charitable 501©3 organization. Store teams are encouraged to form a personal relationship with this organization that they have selected to partner with and volunteer their time with this deserving charity. Stores support six local charities each year that range from organizations who support children to those who support homelessness. We encourage our guests to shop with us on Monday’s to do good in their community.
  • Flutter Fund: At Altar’d State we have a culture of caring and compassion. Our associates have the option of donating any dollar amount per pay period to our Flutter Fund. The funds collected are managed by a committee who is committed to provide emergency relief to eligible associates who are facing unforeseen financial hardships. These emergencies could include medical bills, house fires, floods, or illness. Associates need only fill out a simple request form and submit to our committee for approval. The committee will evaluate each request and render decisions regarding the disbursement of funds. Our Chairman and CEO "seeded" the fund to ensure sufficient funds are available as needs arise.
  • Volunteerism-PAID: Volunteer State of Mind At Altar’d State, one of our main goals is simply to change the world for the better. As an organization of giving back, we encourage our associates to get out in their communities and volunteer. All full-time and part-time associates have the opportunity to get paid their hourly wage to volunteer for 4 hours each month. Every year, our Home Office partners with Habitat for Humanity to build a home in our surrounding community. With each Home Office Associate assisting, we are able to build a home for a deserving family within a matter of weeks. We also partner and volunteer with other organizations, such as Second Harvest, which is a local food bank serving 18 counties.
  • Store Summitts: Twice a year, each Store Leader, District Managers/Visual District Managers, Leadership Team members, and various presenting Home Office associates attend a Manager’s Meeting Summit to encourage learning, training, and fellowship among our store teams. Topics of discussion at the conference include Sales Drivers, Scheduling, Division of Responsibilities, Processes, etc. We also discuss any Human Resource updates with the team at this time as well as host a fashion show to showcase the seasons trends. In addition to training and development, we also use this week together to have fun. At our latest Summit, in Walt Disney World, the team was able to ride rollercoasters together, take pictures with Minnie & Mickey Mouse and dance to African inspired music at Animal Kingdom. Our hope in planning these conferences is to provide ample time for associates to bond while experiencing activities that encourage growth and lifelong memories.
  • Sabbatical: Recharge and enjoy a sabbatical leave provides hard working and dedicated associates the opportunity to enjoy an extended period of time away from work to rejuvenate and/or pursue other interests (e.g. travel, personal development, volunteer work, etc.). The goal is to return to Altar’d State revitalized with fresh ideas and new perspectives. Sabbaticals will also allow other associates the opportunity to cross train, assume new responsibilities, and grow. Both opportunities benefit Altar’d State and our associates as a whole. A sabbatical leave is distinctly different from other paid or unpaid time off. It is not a benefit earned for past service, but is instead an incentive for continued service. Upon return from the sabbatical, associates will be asked to share their month-long experience with existing associates. Purpose: To reward our dedicated and loyal associates with a 4-week paid sabbatical to recharge and enjoy time off, focus on self-development, and recharge..
  • Habitat for Humanity Partnership: Altar’d State has partnered with Habitat for Humanity to build 3 homes for deserving families. We are committed to building a home for a family in need each year moving forward. Besides funding the project, we are committed to providing volunteers to the jobsite each day they are welcome. When a home is complete, we have the joy of standing back and knowing that we created that with our bare hands. The tears, sweat, dirt, were all worth the end result when a family is handed over the keys to their beautiful new home.
  • Quarterly Celebrations: Altar’d State Home Office Associates get to celebrate together four times a year at Quarterly Meetings. These meetings are used as a business recap, assignment of Coprodeli Sponsorships, recognition of hard work, and a day of fun and fellowship. Transportation, breakfast, and lunch are provided to associates and we enjoy taking them on a journey that they wouldn’t necessarily get enjoy on their own time. We’ve witnessed the breathtaking views at Biltmore Estates, had a friendly bowling competition at Main Event, and rode thrilling roller coasters at Dollywood together, just to name a few. Our Quarterly Meetings are a great bonding experience for associates, it truly creates a Family culture within our Home Office environment.
  • 12 Days of Christmas: Altar'd State celebrates the 12 business days leading up to the Holiday with Christmas gifts for 12 days, ranging from pens to coolers. We celebrate Spirit Week. Pajama Day, a dessert contest, tacky sweater day, a cubical decorating contest and toy drive for a homeless shelter. Each Home Office associate is assigned to a store. Christmas in Retail can be taxing, so we send cards, candy, and/or notes of encouragement to our teams in the field. Our Leadership Team also acts as Santa’s Helpers by delivering fresh milk and cookies to associates working diligently at their desks. Last year, we started a new tradition with our very own version of Dog on the Shelf. We play live music in our stores, light up the town of Maryville, and give to those in need- these are just a few of our favorite things to do at Christmas at Altar’ d State.
