Perks and Programs

We asked VMware, Inc. to share a few programs they feel really capture what's unique about their workplace. Here is what they had to say.

  • Enhanced U.S. Parental Leave: Mothers and fathers receive up to 18 weeks of paid family leave at the birth or adoption of a child.
  • Sustainable Commuting: VMware employees have a variety of sustainable commuting options. This includes bike routes and more than 400 bicycle parking spots at our headquarters; free point-to-point shuttles to and from San Francisco, the South Bay, and other larger office locations nationwide; “Last Mile” VMware shuttles between Caltrain stations and our Palo Alto campus; discount Clipper cards for SF Bay Area regional public transit and WI-Fi equipped vanpools. In addition, we offer complimentary electric vehicle charging for our employees at our HQ. Since inception, this initiative alone has avoided 538 metric tons of carbon. Alongside our commuting programs, we recently partnered with Lyft to offset our carbon footprint related to corporate business travel. Lyft donates 1% of each VMware ride taken to Restore the Earth Foundation.
  • Service Learning: VMware’s Service Learning program provides 40 paid hours to employees to contribute their time and talents to the community. It’s called “Service Learning” because unlike traditional volunteering programs that focus on the idea of “helping” others, we believe “service” speaks to relationships between equals. Employees have opportunity to use their skills and talents working with the nonprofit of their choice. This encourages a learning mindset and builds a culture of service that extends beyond our “day-jobs” to lifelong civic engagement.  One VMware system engineer expressed his gratitude for the program. Here is what he shared: “VMware is an absolutely amazing company in the offering of Service Learning work… What an unbelievable blessing it is to work for such an organization that supports the needs of the world… Thank you!”
  • Take Program: The Take Program helps VMware employees explore new opportunities and grow their careers within the company. Short-term programs—Take 1, Take 2, and Take 3—range from course work, trainings and conference participation; to tailor-made, work-with-a different team experiences for skill growth; to multi-month assignments that allow employees to explore where they could take their career next. Employee feedback for the Take Program has been overwhelmingly positive. ”I just love that VMware gives us the ability to continually learn”… “I appreciate the investment VMware puts into its employees” …and “I’m so happy that I took advantage of this program. It was exactly what I needed…” are just a few of comments we’ve received.
  • U.S. Military Leave Support: VMware supports employees who wish to go on Military leave for up to 18 months for duty by paying them the difference between their military pay and full salary, including allowing them to continue health coverage on actively employed premium basis while on leave instead of COBRA. Here is a quote from one employee: “Pat Gelsinger told us to ask for outlandish things, because they were only outlandish until they were not. We asked, and today, we were given an exceptional response…this changes the legacy 30 day’s pay differential during training or deployments, to 18 months. Please take a look at this, and let’s remember to be grateful to work in a company where we can ask for, and receive such amazing benefits.” —VMware Senior System Engineer
  • Gender Reassignment Support: Gender reassignment is a transformative period of time for individuals. VMware actively helps employees undergoing gender reassignment by providing financial support with no lifetime maximum dollar limit. VMware strives to ensure a safe and supportive working environment for all transgender and gender-diverse employees at any stage. Here is what one employee shared: "Recently we were able to make a big impact on a person that was going through the transgender process…” —VMware HR Source Advisor and PRIDE@VMware POD Co-Lead
  • Speaker Series and Rough-Cut Events: VMware’s thought-leading Speaker Series and Rough Cut Series are two ways we invest in learning—it’s the chance to have the VMware community to come together and hear from thought leaders at the vanguard of innovative thinking. Reporter Lisa Ling and Academy award winner Viola Davis are just two of many presenters and TED Talk speakers we’ve invited to share their inspiring ideas, passions, and stories of conviction. Here is a quote from one event attendee: “Thank you so much for bringing Viola Davis to VMware…Viola’s story brought up so many questions on how people are perceived and how they perceive themselves…we need to look outside our own circle of awareness and see what brings us all together as humans…” —VMware Senior Executive Assistant
  • xLabs – Fostering Entrepreneurship: xLabs offers VMware employees both with and without technical backgrounds a platform to bring their own ideas to life. Employees can gain valuable experience to become a founder within xLabs’ startup-like environment and build what’s next. xLabs supports each participant’s growth as an innovator by serving as a professional development plan. Our innovators also get exposure from senior management and leadership as they develop their projects. Employees get access to capital, time, wide network of expertise, and connections to our community of innovators. Here is a quote from one employee: “xLabs offers innovators a chance to form a startup type environment and push hard in pursuit of a bold idea.  It brings the benefits of a large company while offering the thrill of a small startup.” –2017 xLabs participant
  • Back-up Child and Elder Care: At VMware, we’re focused on the well-being of our employees’ families. We’ve partnered with the Bright Horizons® company to offer employees the Back-Up Care child care and adult/elder care services. Our employees have complete access to quality childcare centers and licensed in-home care providers to fall back on when: • regular care arrangements break down • school is closed • transitioning to a new schedule or a new caregiver • or any other number of reasons Registration is free and employees pay only a small co-payment to use care. For example, for full day care in home maximum is $10 for day and if taken to a day care center it is $5.00 for the day. Maximum number of usage is 10 times a year.
  • Gym Facilities / Gym Reimbursement: Our Palo Alto campus has a fitness center called “Club vFit”— a partially Company-subsidized state-of-the-art, 18,000 square-foot facility equipped with cardiovascular and strength training equipment, plus group fitness classes including Zumba®, H.E.A.T., TRX®, Bollywood®, Bootcamp, Cycling, Pilates Mat, Yoga, and much more. It’s open 24/7 and is available full-time employees, temporary and contract workers. Employees who work remotely or at facilities without an onsite gym are eligible for reimbursement of up to $100 per quarter for gym or fitness class reimbursements. Here is what one employee shared: “I would like to thank the entire staff of Club vFIT for helping us bring our best version to VMware and always pushing our limits. Thank you— you rock!”

How to Get Hired

We asked VMware, Inc. for some inside information on how to get hired at the organization. Here is what they had to say.

What key characteristics tell you a prospective employee will be a great fit for your company?

People who join VMware — and the people we seek — know that it’s a place where they can take an active role in their future. They’re gifted individuals who want to determine the direction of their career. They aspire to be agents of change, transforming technology and business for the good of our customers. And they’re citizens of the world who want to make an impact locally in the community and globally, too. VMware hires people with these characteristics because they’re the basis of our EPIC2 (Execution, Passion, Integrity, Customers, and Community) values.

What can prospective employees do to get your attention?

We thrive on ingenuity; the best way to get our attention is to be creative. Employee referrals are our number one source of new hires. So, anyone interested in joining us should start by scouring their networks for people who are connected to VMware (including our recruiters)—or by engaging in one of our online social communities. We are socially involved and active on Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, YouTube, and Instagram, as well as Glassdoor, HackerRank and StackOverflow. Make sure your LinkedIn profile is updated with your latest projects, skills, aspirations, and a little bit about who you are so that we can quickly identify the most relevant opportunities for you within our workplace. Ask questions and share your ideas and passions or send us a resume. Connect with us and show interest. Remember that VMware seeks people who are passionate and have a drive and love for their work.

Are there any positions or types of candidates you are particularly focused on hiring in this coming year?

We’re growing our product development and sales teams in four areas:• Software-Defined Data Center (SDDC): The technology backbone supporting virtual storage and availability, network and security, and management and automation. • Networking & Security: Embedding networking and security functionality into the hypervisor to transform the data center’s operational model and allow the full potential of SDDC to be realized. • Cloud Management: Delivering the most complete solution for managing a heterogeneous, hybrid cloud. • End-User-Computing (EUC): Providing secure desktop, mobile and social access to data, applications and devices to support productivity in mobile-cloud environments while retaining appropriate control over the computing environment. We are hiring Field sales professionals, especially Solution sales people with management software expertise; and Quality Engineers within R&D. Our consulting division, or Professional Services Organization (PSO), seeks Business Solution Architects, Operations Architects and Senior Systems Engineers (SE) to provide direct support for our SDDC and Cloud Management customers.
