We asked Uptake to share a few programs they feel really capture what's unique about their workplace. Here is what they had to say.

  • Uptake University: Uptake creates an environment for everyone to perform at their personal best, and we know that developing skills, knowledge and community fosters employee growth. In that spirit we launched Uptake University, which allows open enrollment in learning that's provided by internal faculty and external partnerships to create unique and enriching opportunities that range from leadership training to well being, technical learning and more. In addition to our coordinated partnerships with the likes of The Second City and The Conscious Leadership Group, we also offer what we call ULearn, whereby Uptake covers the cost for employees to attend additional external educational opportunities.
  • Health and Wellness: We have a full time health and wellness program coordinator on-staff who's dedicated to ensuring our kitchens are stocked with fresh, healthy snack options, leading health challenges (like our recent weight loss challenge) and organizing groups like the Uptake walking club. As a company, we make every effort to give our team the resources needed to be active and healthy both at work and at home.
  • Women in Tech: We have established a “recruiting ambassadors” program to help attract women in product and tech. Further, we train and certify our recruiters on how to proactively search for candidates who are typically underrepresented in technology, including women. Additionally, we recently launched a Women@Uptake community, which is thriving.
  • Company Events: Uptake is dedicated to building community amongst our employees and their families. Our annual summer party - which this year included everything from live music to food trucks, a beer garden and kid zone - encourages family attendance and offers special activities for children. In addition, Uptake's annual bring your children to work event "Camp Uptake" welcomes kids of all ages to come learn, explore and play at our corporate headquarters for a day.
  • Philanthropy and Civic Innovation: Within the first year of Uptake's existence, our Co-Founder and CEO, Brad Keywell, launched beyond.uptake, Uptake's philanthropic and civic innovation arm that leverages the power of data to solve critical problems for social sector organizations. We don't just donate money or time; we build solutions to help solve real world problems. Current applications we're building will deliver a college matching solution for underserved students, an anti-poaching solution in Sub-Saharan Africa, and anti-human trafficking solution on the Nepal-India border.
  • Community Involvement: Uptakers are champions of Chicago and our local community. Serving those around us is our way of giving back to the city that has helped us thrive. We've partnered with organizations like local non-profit Blue 1647 - an entrepreneurship and technology innovation center that fosters economic development in technology and 21st Century skills - to boost workforce development and training around data science. We're also closely engaged with other local tech organizations, like the Illinois Technology Association, 1871 (a start-up tech hub) and Chicago Ideas Week (our CEO is the founder) to help promote Chicago's technology scene not only locally but nationally.
  • Inventor Incentive Program: Innovation is core to Uptake’s values. From data processing, platform architecture to how we do business, employees are encouraged to submit potentially patentable ideas for review. Employees who submit viable ideas are eligible for an award of up to $2,000 and named inventors on granted U.S. Patents.
  • Daily Food Allowance: In addition to free fresh produce and snacks, Uptake simplifies lunchtime by offers employees a daily $5 credit ($10 on Fridays) to use toward food from local restaurants via food ordering and delivery service Fooda. Those working past 7:00 p.m. have a $15 credit to use toward food from Seamless.
  • Uptake Launch: Every new hire at Uptake goes through Uptake Launch, two days of hands-on education and onboarding. Launch provides a deep dive into Uptake's culture and business, ensuring everyone starts out on the same informational page. We've included mandatory harassment and discrimination training as part of our onboarding program for all new employees at all levels. 
  • Special Interest Groups: Nurturing an environment that supports a variety of interests, Uptake offers formalized employee-led groups for those wish to connect with others and help build a community. Groups include Parents, Well-being, Pride, Entrepreneurs and Games.
