Perks and Programs

We asked Twisthink to share a few programs they feel really capture what's unique about their workplace. Here is what they had to say.

  • PRP (Performance Recognition Payments: At Twisthink we have a team-focused business model that represents a "win together lose together" mentality. This is represented in our bonus program (which we actually call PRP = performance recognition payment in order to provoke a different kind of behavior with risk and reward). PRP is a bi-annual benefit that everyone either receives or does not receive, based on the performance of our team as a whole. This has been well received across the team and has resulted in a hospitable culture where teammates are not afraid to ask for help or to provide help to others, in order to perform at our best.
  • Souper Fridays: "Souper Friday" takes place once a month in the colder months of Michigan (September-April). On these Fridays, we have a local chef come to our space and cook fresh soup for the team. We have had the same chef for every Souper Friday and appreciate the opportunity to support her and her entrepreneurial business. We also enjoy the opportunity to take a break from our work day and gather as a team over a warm bowl of soup and listen to presentations that help us expand on our knowledge in the areas of design, technology and strategy.
  • Family Pignic: Every summer after the kids are done with school and its summertime in West Michigan, we invite everyone on the team to come with their families to our annual picnic. There's a reason this tradition has continued for over a decade. At Twisthink, we value every individual on our team and understand the impact their families have on their lives. This is why we take the time and investment to have a night filled with food, drinks, and games to get to know those important people in each of their lives.
  • Beer/Wine Cart Fridays: One of our customers, Snap-On, designs and manufactures high-end tools and equipment, and has a product in their portfolio that is a tool cart. At Twisthink, it is our responsibility to look at our client's products in a new light and improve it. So, we saw this as an opportunity to use their product in our space, but not for tools, instead for ice cold beverages to end a busy work week. One of our engineers turned the top of the tool cart into a cutting board and we quickly converted it to the Twisthink beer (or wine) cart. We use this on Friday afternoons to end busy weeks and toast to celebrate the end of projects, new teammates, new marriages, new babies, the end of internships or to the close of another exciting year. It has become one of our team's favorite traditions!
  • Twistmas: Every winter around the holiday season we have a celebration that we call Twistmas, where spouses and significant others are invited to celebrate the end of another exciting year. We shift the venue each year to keep it fun and interesting. Past events have included parties in art galleries, greenhouses, fine restaurants in 3 different local cities, and even catered parties in our office space. Last year we had a special delivery from two Twisthink elves that hand delivered a holiday gift to everyone, which tends to be a tech-related gift (such as an Amazon Echo Dot or WyzeCam) similar to the technology products we help create at Twisthink.
  • Friday Morning Standup Meetings: Every Friday morning, we have a team meeting in the kitchen, for about 10-20 minutes, to discuss project updates, upcoming events, new projects, completed projects, employee achievements, personal announcements and more. During these morning standups we also celebrate everyone's work anniversaries with a gift to show our appreciation and celebrate another great year on the team! There is also a breakfast snack provided every Friday morning to enjoy after or during our these meetings.
  • Monthly Business Review: On the second Friday or every month, we replace our Friday morning standup with a 1-2 hour Business Review Meeting. This is where the entire team gathers for a longer period of time to talk openly about the state of the business, company strategies and vision, and other company updates. During this time the leadership team also shares what is being done to address comments and concerns from our employee survey. We also use this time to recognize our team's work through quarterly project reviews, where each person stands up and presents a slide on their current project work.
  • 2:1 Donation Match: We promote a 2:1 match through payroll deduction available to all employees. This allows each employee to decide from a handful of organizations, which one they are most passionate about and can then consistently contribute their earnings toward the cause(s). We also collectively donate a certain percentage of the earnings from each project we complete on time and on budget to these same organizations.
  • 1-to-1 Mentor Program: We offer a 1-to-1 mentorship program where each employee is assigned to a leader and meets one-on-one with them at least once per month to review performance goals, growth goals, current challenges, and more. We intentionally involve each employee in various project types to gain exposure and experience in different areas. Each employee also has an annual performance appraisal where salary / job description adjustments can be made accordingly. The company also sends young leaders on the team through a leadership program that a third of the company has completed and found to be a valuable experience.
  • Team Mountain Bike Rides: Once a month during the summer and fall, Twisthink hosts a group bike ride at one of the many mountain bike trails in the West Michigan area. Twisthink also covers bike rentals for people that do not own a bike, so that everyone who's interested can participate. After the ride, everyone goes to a nearby restaurant to enjoy dinner and drinks as a Team!

What key characteristics tell you a prospective employee will be a great fit for your company?

At Twisthink we are a team-oriented company where everyone must thrive in a culture based on collaboration, creativity and innovation. When looking for individuals that would be a great fit for our company we follow Patrick Lencioni's guidelines for "the ideal team player" which evaluates candidates based on 3 categories: humble, hungry and smart. We use these characteristics because they align well with our 5 values: creativity, agility, growth, hospitality and team. We look for people who are humble that promote the team over themselves and define success collectively rather than individually. As a small company, we also need people who are hungry and self-motivated. These types of people make great additions to our team because of their agility and their drive that helps us grow and be creative. Lastly, smart team members have good judgement and intuition around group dynamics, customer relationships, and how best to engage with people.

What can prospective employees do to get your attention?

At Twisthink, we are always open to networking and bringing individuals into our space. Are there any positions or types of candidates you are particularly focused on hiring in this coming year?

Our team is actively growing and planning to add 3-6 new members to our team this year. Right now, we are heavily recruiting for Embedded Software Engineers and a Senior Industrial Designer. The types of candidates we are looking for are people who have a desire to grow as a leader, be a team player, have an entrepreneur mentality and have the ability to equally serve our clients and our team.
