Perks and Programs

We asked The Container Store to share a few programs they feel really capture what's unique about their workplace. Here is what they had to say.

  • Employee First Fund: Employees support one another and their families through tough times by donating to the company's Employee First Fund, which provides grants up to $10,000 to employees for unforeseen circumstances they’re not financially prepared to deal with.
  • Tenure Awards: The Container Store honors tenured employees for their hard work and dedication to the company when they reach their 10, 15, 20, 25, 30 and 35+ year career milestones. Honorees and a guest are flown from around the country to the headquarters city of Dallas for an awards dinner at the Ritz-Carlton catered by renowned chef Dean Fearing. In addition, at 10 years, full-time employees receive an additional two weeks of vacation to be used that year; at 15 years, employees receive a commemorative Fossil watch; at 20 years, employees receive two airline tickets to anywhere in the United States, $1,000 in spending money and an extra two weeks of vacation (for full-time employees); at 25 years employees receive $2,500 and a lifetime employee discount.
  • We Love Our Employees Day: Each Valentine's Day, The Container Store celebrates National We Love Our Employees Day! Employees are given gifts, love notes and hugs from the company to thank them for their hard work.
  • Foundation Training: All employees start their career with a week’s worth of dedicated training on The Container Store's Foundation Principles, Conscious Capitalism and other aspects of the culture and workplace to ensure they are set up for a successful career. Following this initial training, a Leadership Development Training Program is available for up-and-coming leaders at the company.
  • Maternity and Paternity Leave: New dads are offered two weeks of paid paternity leave, while new moms receive two weeks of paid maternity leave, six weeks of paid disability leave and up to twelve weeks off.
  • 40% Employee Discount: Employees receive a 40% merchandise discount and a 50% discount on elfa - The Container Store's best-selling product. Plus, employees are treated to occasional "surprise" employee purchase programs when The Container Store partners with a vendor to offer employees select merchandise at substantial savings.
  • Health Insurance for Part-Time Employees: The Container Store offers health insurance for part-time employees with no work-hour minimum.
  • Fun Company Celebrations: Celebrating is a HUGE part of The Container Store's company culture and really exemplifies the Foundation Principle, “Air of Excitement!" The company puts its employees first and celebrates everything they do each day – whether that’s an incredible sales day, a new store opening, the FORTUNE 100 Best Companies to Work For honor, the company-wide Chili Cook-off, the addition of a new product, or even helping a customer with a special request. A day doesn’t go by (if we’re being honest, probably not even an hour passes) at The Container Store that we don’t celebrate a success – big or small.
  • Paid Communication Time: One of The Container Store's Foundation Principles is Communication IS Leadership. Part-time employees (or prime-time as The Container Store calls them) are given paid time on the clock to review major company communication each week.
  • Casual Dress Code: No matter the department or store, all employees enjoy a casual dress code every day.

How to Get Hired

We asked The Container Store for some inside information on how to get hired at the organization. Here is what they had to say.

What key characteristics tell you a prospective employee will be a great fit for your company?

No matter his or her background, a prospective employee should be enthusiastic and have a passion for selling and service. He or she should also like working with the public since employees at all levels must relate to customers and their needs and help solve their problems. We look for candidates that demonstrate their flexibility, ability to deal with ambiguity and be situationally adaptable. Gumby is The Container Store's unofficial mascot because flexibility is highly valued here. The Container Store is a very communicative and collaborative place to work. We look for candidates who show us that they can be a team player. We also look for thought-provoking, enthusiastic people with outside interests, hopes and dreams, who let their personalities shine through during the interview process!

What can prospective employees do to get your attention?

If you're already a loyal customer of The Container Store, you've got a leg up on the competition because, as a customer, you can appreciate the impact of the company's products and services on busy lives. In addition, The Container Store likes to hire friends and family of current employees, so if at all possible, ask someone who works at The Container Store to refer you. It will benefit them, too since company employees receive $400 for every successful referral. And do your homework. Show that you've researched our company and the job. Go beyond the website: read our Foundation Principles, visit our stores, check out our blog, and follow our social media channels. We invest a lot in our people and expect prospective employees to invest time researching if we are the right fit for them as well.

Are there any positions or types of candidates you are particularly focused on hiring in this coming year?

We're particularly interested in finding great people to work in our stores across the country. We're continuing to open an increasing number of stores each year in new markets, and that translates into more opportunities to work for The Container Store.

What should interested candidates do to find out more and get started?

Getting hired starts with submitting an application online. Give yourself enough time to complete three required essay questions where you'll expand on your experiences and why you want to work there. If you pass the initial stage, you'll be invited to several interviews with a variety of managers, including the company president if the position calls for it. The company also holds group interviews in its retail stores on a regular basis. The interviews are a good way to demonstrate how you interact in a group and get noticed should a position pop up in the future. Check out The Container Store's extensive career site for more information at www.containerstore.com/careers.
