Perks and Programs

We asked Southern Light to share a few programs they feel really capture what's unique about their workplace. Here is what they had to say.

  • Community Involvement: Southern Light participated in 24 community service initiatives in 2015. Employees are encouraged to participate during work hours. These include serving lunch to the homeless, raising money for school supplies, assisting with home building/renovation projects, and mentoring children. Specifically, Southern Light partners with Big Brothers Big Sisters, the American Cancer Society, the Waterfront Rescue Mission (homeless shelter), Wings of Life (substance abuse rehabilitation), Volunteers of America, FUSE (education support), and 15th Place (meals for the hungry).
  • Veterans Recognition Program: Approximately 20% of our employees are Veterans, and the Southern Light Veterans Support Association (SLVSA) exists to help Veterans both internally and externally. Our Veterans are given the opportunity to wear a red Southern Light polo with an American flag on the right sleeve and are encouraged to do so on Fridays. Additionally, there are special gatherings that are particular to the SLSVA, creating a strong support base of community and camaraderie.
  • Paid Maternity Leave: Southern Light offers full maternity leave for all employees.
  • Paid Paternity Leave: Southern Light offers five days paternity leave for all Fathers.
  • Southern Light Fitness Plan: Southern Light provides all employees with a FitBit and provides $20/month towards gym membership. Employees compete for the most steps and definitely remind one another of who is winning.
  • Company automobile usage: Employees with company vehicles are empowered to use vehicles for personal use and take home.

    How to Get Hired

We asked Southern Light for some inside information on how to get hired at the organization. Here is what they had to say.

What key characteristics tell you a prospective employee will be a great fit for your company?

They are motivated, teachable, enthusiastiac individuals who want to be a part of the Southern Light family. They find meaning in pursuing and obtaining common, challenging goals. They value our special culture and contribute to it. They are able to adapt quickly and work in a fast-paced, changing environment.

What can prospective employees do to get your attention?

They can demonstrate their connection to our company and culture. We rely heavily on employee recommendations to source applicants because we are a family, and we like knowing that the people that we hire are already connected to us in a personal way.

Are there any positions or types of candidates you are particularly focused on hiring in this coming year?

The majority of our new hires will be in the field, including construction crews and networking specialists. We are particularly focused on hiring people who fit within our company culture. Southern Light can teach someobody how to perform a specific task, but we can't always teach someone how to care about the company, be a part of a team, and make a difference.

What should interested candidates do to find out more and get started?

Resumes can be submitted on our website, www.slfiber.com.
