We asked Sheetz, Inc. to share a few programs they feel really capture what's unique about their workplace. Here is what they had to say.

  • Bonuses: The Sheetz family firmly believes all of their employees should share in the success of the company. That means quarterly bonuses for everyone, from the part-time employee unloading the trucks to the store manager. Every year, between 35 and 40 percent of the company’s pre-tax profits go toward bonuses for company employees.
  • Years of Service Recognition: We’re proud of the way we recognize and reward service with Sheetz at the Employee Recognition & Service Awards, held every year at Pennsylvania’s Seven Springs Mountain Resort—a sprawling property with a golf course, spa, lake, riding stables and a host of other activities. We celebrate service in five-year milestones: Employees who have worked with us for five, 10 and 15 years are invited to a two-day stay at the resort with a guest of their choice. Those with 20 or more years of service may stay three days, and are treated to a special dinner and recognition ceremony with the executive committee. Meals, drinks and resort activities are included. The event is held over a week, and employees may choose the dates they attend at their convenience.
  • Free Drinks and Food Discounts: Store employees get half off any prepared food purchased at their stores while they’re on the clock. Currently we’re looking to expand that discount program so that employees receive 15-18 percent off outside working hours, allowing them to pick up food for family and friends. We're still researching what will be best for our employees, and we hope to roll out the discount program soon. Our Distribution Centers and Sheetz Bros. Kitchens have employee cafeterias serving food at significantly reduced prices, including hot meals, salad bars, snacks and desserts. Fountain drinks, coffee, tea and water are unlimited and free.
  • Show The Love Kits: We give all of our managers a Show the Love Kit to make it easy for them to give timely recognition to their employees. The kit comes with thank-you cards for recognizing outstanding efforts, such as covering shifts and exceptional customer service. The kit also includes posters for birthdays and work anniversaries where coworkers have plenty of space to write personal messages. “WOW” hatpins are for employees who have gone above and beyond their duties; they get “SuperWOW” pins for a fifth “WOW” recognition. Finally, Employee Appreciation coupons for free M•T•O products go to anyone covering an unscheduled shift. Last year there was a total of 157,000 “on-the-spot” recognitions—that’s more than 13,000 a month!
  • Upward Mobility: Employees have plenty of room to grow within the organization, as evidenced by the fact that 68 percent of Sheetz store managers started off in entry-level positions. The company offers myriad training opportunities that allow people in entry-level hourly positions to move up and become shift supervisors, assistant managers and managers. Also, we partner with 13 colleges and universities who offer tuition discounts to Sheetz employees, and we provide tuition reimbursement, scholarship opportunities and flexible scheduling to encourage continuous learning at all levels of the company.

How to Get Hired

We asked Sheetz, Inc. for some inside information on how to get hired at the organization. Here is what they had to say.

What key characteristics tell you a prospective employee will be a great fit for your company?

Primarily, we hire for culture fit. It can be hard to put a company’s culture into words. But a few years ago, we interviewed hundreds of our employees to define just what it is that makes up the DNA of Sheetz. As usual, they nailed it. Our employees are all unique individuals who bring special talents and abilities to the table. But there are a few things they have in common, and that’s what makes Sheetz…Sheetz. They’re Real, approachable, helpful and genuine. They’re Pioneering, always looking for new and better ways to do things. They’re High Energy, keeping our stores running 24-7-365. They’re Dependable, always there for our customers and each other. They’re Connected, building lasting relationships in our communities. What can prospective employees do to get your attention?

While Sheetz is well known throughout our six states for our food, beverages and convenience, we still find it important to talk to the community about making Sheetz into a career.

Candidates interested in a job opening at a store start by completing an online application, which includes a prescreening questionnaire. The candidates must also take one of three assessment tests that help to determine aptitude, attitude, customer-service skills and, based on the position, leadership abilities. The manager and assistant manager assessment also includes understanding of business financials and team leadership abilities.

We suggest that candidates visit a store to see us in action during our rush times. That way they’ll get a feel for how busy we are, how well we work together and the demands of the job. At Sheetz, there’s never a dull moment and every day is different. Some love it and adapt quickly; others can’t handle the pace.

Are there any unusual or especially rigorous steps of your hiring process that candidates should be aware of?

In addition to the bank of questions, the assessment results provide probing interview questions to further help store management decide which applicant is the best fit for their particular store’s culture. While the applicant’s past work experience is a factor, especially if they’ve had jobs in retail or fast food, we don’t dismiss applicants who lack that. What’s important is that they demonstrate the other attributes we’re seeking, such as reliability, a good work ethic, strong interpersonal skills and the willingness to learn. We also look for people who can relate to our DNA. The hiring manager is empowered to make the selection—we encourage every store to have its own subculture that reflects the personalities of those who work there.


Are there any positions or types of candidates you are particularly focused on hiring in this coming year?

Do they demonstrate a high level of respect for others? Are they “real?” Do they show a pioneering attitude and a deep connection to their community? Would their new team be able to depend on them? Are they high-energy and driven to win? We know how important it is to have new employees who fit our culture and share our values. After all, we hope they’ll stay with us a while. Many do: We currently have 328 employees who have worked with Sheetz for 20 years or more.
