Perks and Programs

We asked Sheetz, Inc. to share a few programs they feel really capture what's unique about their workplace. Here is what they had to say.

  • Above-Average Pay: In January 2016, Sheetz announced a $15-million wage increase for our store employees. That move is so unusual—especially in our industry—that it drew the attention of Fortune, the Wall Street Journal and other national news outlets. As we reinvest in our business, our goal is to offer hourly wages in the 90th percentile with other retailers. We ensure that we’re paying our employees a living wage that will sustain a family. Once we factor in our bonus and benefits programs, we’re confident that our compensation is at the top of the chart for retailers.
  • Full-Time Hours: In 2016, we also announced our decision to shift more of our store employees from part-time to full-time work. That’s not the norm in our industry. The model for our competitors—other convenience retailers and quick-serve restaurants—is based on part-time employees. But Sheetz believes that full-time employees are more engaged in their work, thereby delivering excellent Total Customer Focus. By working more hours, employees earn more and gain full benefits, which are given to those who put in 30 or more hours a week. This also allows for better scheduling opportunities to support a strong work-life balance. So this move is a win for both employees and customers.
  • Vacation and Personal Days: After a store employee has worked full-time for Sheetz for a year, they earn a one-week paid vacation plus four personal days a year. Two weeks paid vacation are given to those with two to six years of service. Offering vacation time to all is rare in our industry—but at Sheetz, even part-time employees get their time off.
  • Employee Bonuses: Our bonus program is unique among retailers. Every Sheetz employee, from the part-time high-school student to the store manager, is eligible to receive a quarterly bonus. The Sheetz family firmly believes that every employee should share in the company’s success. Every year, 35–40% of pre-tax profits are paid out in bonuses for all employees. In 2016, we paid $53 million dollars in bonus to employees.
  • Industry-Leading Benefits: Our benefits are highly unusual for the retail/food industry. Our healthcare coverage includes medical, dental, vision care, prescriptions and disability insurance. Our three wellness centers provide free on-site care, screenings and health coaching to employees and eligible dependents. We also offer stress-management and health-education sessions, and organize quarterly challenges to involve all employees in healthy lifestyle choices. For those without access to our wellness centers, Virtual Health lets them interact with a doctor by smartphone or computer. Healthcare is only part of the package. Our 401(k) retirement savings plan matches employee contributions dollar for dollar—and employees are fully vested upon enrollment. Even part-time employees receive full benefits when they work 30 or more hours a week.
  • Employee Stock Ownership: After working for Sheetz one year, employees become company shareholders through our Employee Stock Ownership Program (ESOP). Each year, Sheetz awards company stock based on years of service and salary level. Employees are 100% vested after three years of service. Having ownership in the company inspires employees to work like owners, and as the company prospers they see the value of their shares growing. ESOP offers our people financial security, which is just one reason for the number of long-tenured employees who want to keep working here for years to come. When they retire or leave the company, employees receive the entire vested value of their ESOP account.
  • Recognition Abounds: We’re proud of all the ways we recognize and reward our employees. Our annual Service Awards event, we call SheetzFest, celebrates milestones: We give employees with five, 10 and 15 years of service two-day stays at one of two resorts with a guest; those with 20 or more years get three days (plus cash awards). We also give Operational Excellence Awards to our stores, and schedule Prize Patrol events where our executives show up at winning stores to celebrate. To make day-to-day recognition easy, we send our managers Show the Love Kits that include thank-you cards for outstanding efforts, such as exceptional customer service. The kits also have posters for birthdays and work anniversaries and coupons for free food and beverages.
  • Upward Mobility Opportunity: Sheetz employees have plenty of room to grow within the organization. Our company training allows people in entry-level hourly positions to move up and become Supervisors, Assistant Managers and Store Managers. In fact, 72% of our Store Managers started off as salespeople, and 86% of those Managers were promoted from within. Store employees can also transition to our support staff. Sheetz has more than 500 non-store job titles. In a typical year we transition about 50 store employees to supporting roles. And we encourage continuous learning at all levels of the company, offering tuition reimbursement to those pursuing a college degree, plus scholarships and flexible scheduling.
  • Educational Opportunity: To encourage our employees to earn a degree, our College Tuition Reimbursement program offers $750 per semester ($1,500 per year) to anyone working toward an associate, bachelor’s or master's degree. Graduate-level course work is fully covered, based on the employee’s position and career plan. Sheetz also partners with 26 colleges and universities to arrange tuition discounts of up to 50% off for our employees. Salem International University gives our Store Managers 30 credits for completing our internal management training—credits they can put toward a bachelor’s degree in Retail Management. What’s more, we offer multiple $5,000 and $10,000 scholarships to deserving Sheetz employees, their children and stepchildren (full- or part-time students) through our own scholarship program, The Big Joe Scholarship Fund.
  • Free Drinks and Discounts: All our store employees get free coffee, tea and fountain drinks while they’re on the clock. As of summer 2016, we’ve expanded our discount program so it applies to all our employees. Store employees receive half off prepared foods during working hours and now receive 10% off everything in the store, whether they’re on or off the clock. And non-store employees receive the 10% discount at any time.
