How to Get Hired

We asked Service Corporation International (SCI) for some inside information on how to get hired at the organization. Here is what they had to say.

What key characteristics tell you a prospective employee will be a great fit for your company?

Teamwork is the foundation of our employment culture. Although we celebrate the difference that one person can make, we know that success often expands with diversity and the synergies that are inherent in teamwork.  We seek motivated individuals who have a positive attitude and driven by an organization that fosters a culture of character and integrity. To create a unified and caring culture, we look for individuals who are team driven, compassionate and can be empathic to families in their time of need.  We are a team of caregivers. We seek people who have a passion for compassion. Many people who join our company do so because they believe it to be a vitally important ministry or a calling. We look to attract individuals who are committed to service excellence. Our company values include Respect, Integrity, Service Excellence and Enduring Relationships, and we look for individuals with these characteristics.

What can prospective employees do to get your attention?

Our company advertises all job openings, and we encourage all interested applicants to apply to positions based on their experience, interest, and qualifications. We accept and review all candidate resumes and applications; however, some jobs require state licenses and designations, which may eliminate a candidate from consideration. If a candidate does not have the appropriate qualifications, they will receive a letter explaining that we are not moving them forward in the process. In such cases, we encourage applicants to apply to other positions, which may be more suitable to their qualifications. Candidates who complete the entire application, submit an updated resume, and apply to positions based on experience will likely have a greater chance of obtaining an interview with our organization.

Are there any positions or types of candidates you are particularly focused on hiring in this coming year?

We seek to attract funeral care providers and sales professionals who have a passion for service. Our goal is to provide an unsurpassed level of care to our clients who have an immediate need, as well as families who will one day need our services. Our goal is to ensure we render the best care and guidance, so we seek candidates who have a passion for serving and a desire for ensuring our families receive the highest level of care. Our positions require individuals who can assist our families with compassion. We need people who can serve as funeral directors and embalmers, general managers and removal technicians. We also hire grounds specialists and funeral service assistants as well. Our needs and services are unique, diverse, and they require a commitment to service, so all candidates with a desire to serve and help others are encouraged to apply.

What should interested candidates do to find out more and get started?

Our company website provides a path to all our open positions, which are categorized by location and specialization. The organization offers frequent announcements through our press releases so applicants may review real-time updates on the company and its locations.  We publish career fair information on our website, and we advertise all our positions on most major veteran and diversity sites as well as several mainstream job sites such as Glassdoor, Indeed, ZipRecruiter, and LinkedIn. Once a candidate applies and completes an online application, our corporate recruiters review the resume and will move the applicant forward if they meet the essential functions of the position. If the applicant is not selected, recruiters will notify the candidate, and their profile will remain in our database for future consideration.  There is no penalty for applying to multiple positions, so candidates are encouraged to apply to any jobs that pique their interest.
