We asked Sephora US to share a few programs they feel really capture what's unique about their workplace. Here is what they had to say.

  • Sephora Stands Together: Sephora Stands Together provides short-term assistance to Sephora employees facing financial hardship caused by natural disaster, family emergency, and other unexpected events. Grant amounts vary based on the nature of the event and related expenses. These grants are not loans and do not have to be repaid. After a disaster, grants may be provided to employees for basic expenses, such as temporary shelter, clothing, food, transportation expenses, and other necessities that are not immediately provided by emergency community services or insurance. We are a Sephora family and we stand together in times of need. Employees can donate to this fund (or any charity of their choice) and Sephora will match the donation dollar for dollar, up to $5,000 per year.
  • Classes for Confidence: We stand with those facing major life transitions. This program provides free, specialized beauty classes, beginning with women re-entering the workforce. We are also piloting a class for women who have undergone cancer treatment. In our first year, we have held more than 200 classes with 2,000 women. We aim to inspire confidence in 100,000 women by the end of 2020 through these special classes.
  • Sephora Accelerate: Even in the beauty industry, where most customers are women, female founders are still underrepresented. We see a unique opportunity to draw from our history of working with entrepreneurs to build a supportive community for early-stage female founders. Through bootcamps, mentorship, and funding we’re aiming to build an ecosystem of support for more than 50 women-led beauty businesses with a social impact by 2020.
  • Innovation Lab: The Innovation Lab team was built to test new technologies that is then implemented in stores, online and within our app. But with a history of disruption, Sephora nurtures innovation at every level. "Idea Central" is a program by the Innovation Lab that allows ALL employees to submit their ideas; peers then vote ideas "up" or "down." Highest ranking votes are submitted to the responsible department to test and innovate -- and many are executed. Those that submit the top ideas win contests, like cocktails with our CEO! At the corporate office in San Francisco, employees can sign up to attend half-day Hackathons and tackle a current business challenge the company is facing or apply to be on our prestigious "Think Tank" team.
  • Sephora University: As a company, Sephora heavily invests in the training and development of our employees—both in job training/product knowledge and in career development. In our stores, every shift begins with a “Daily Dose” of training and every single employee has a tailored development plan with actionable items to help them get to the next step in their career. For corporate employees, we plan development weeks several times a year called “Careerfest” to encourage employees to take a free class provided by Sephora University or to set aside time for their personal development. And every single employee has a people-related objective in their annual review.
  • Shared Rewards: Sephora is unique in our industry because every single employee is bonus eligible—from seasonal hires to our CEO, with a track record of bonuses paying out more often than not over the last 16 years. Moreover, our retail employees are not paid on commission, which allows for greater trust between our employees and our clients (we’ll never push a product that isn’t right just because we want the sale). Our store employees work as a team and receive cash bonuses based on the entire store’s sales.
  • Family Planning: Sephora's robust medical plans include adoption support, fertility benefits, and family leave not only for new moms, but for fathers and domestic partners as well. Each floor at Sephora is equipped with a Mother's Room for new moms, and we provide each new mom a hospital-grade nursing pump.
  • Summer Fridays: Employees in our Field Support Center (corporate office) are encouraged to enjoy summers in the Bay Area and get an early start to the weekend from Memorial Day through Labor Day. By working an hour longer Monday through Thursday, employees can leave at 1 P.M. on Fridays to enjoy the San Francisco sunshine.
  • Surprise and Delight: Sephora hosts monthly ‘Play Days’ where corporate employees are invited to take time out of their day to play with the latest products and experiment with the hottest trends that are currently in store. Whether it’s learning how to achieve the perfect bold lip or playing around with the latest highlighters and illuminators (and then getting to take product home!), it’s a fun way to disconnect from meetings and emails for a bit while becoming more connected to what is happening in store. Additionally, there are several ‘surprise’ celebrations that happen throughout the year. On National Donut Day, for example, we brought in donut carts where employees could DIY their own donut breakfast.
  • That Extra Sparkle: On top of a year-round merchandise discount, Sephora employees receive free product (frequently called “gratis”) from our brand partners as a token of appreciation. Our cast members (store employees) also receive gratis for training purposes throughout the year. Our sister brands under our parent company, LVMH, also offer our employees occasional discounts throughout the year, such as Marc Jacobs sample sale, Benefit Cosmetics brow services, and Domaine Chandon wine tastings.

What key characteristics tell you a prospective employee will be a great fit for your company?

Sephora looks for team members who demonstrate our values of Innovation, Respect, Teamwork, Initiative, Expertise, Passion, and Balance. When we meet candidates, whether for a role in stores, in Finance or in Digital, we want to hear that they’re obsessed with delivering an exceptional experience to our clients. It doesn’t mean they have to be a beauty junky, but it does mean they place a supreme value on going above and beyond for our client. For the leading retailer in the prestige beauty space, we’re surprisingly similar to a start-up in how fast we operate and feel. We’re looking for team members who will embrace this entrepreneurial culture and thrive in it by demonstrating ways they’ve been nimble, quick learners with an eye for how to always keep innovating.

What can prospective employees do to get your attention?

We're fortunate to receive many applications from interested candidates. For all openings, we also encourage creative, targeted messaging to store leaders or the recruiting team to stand out from the pack – we are always actively engaging on LinkedIn. Recently, we hired a candidate who applied to a corporate role by mailing a recruiter an amazing pictorial resume of her qualified skills and all of the reasons she loved Sephora. She even showed how the décor of her apartment embodied our brand with black and white striped walls, while still focusing on her professional skills and qualifications. We appreciate persistence and encourage candidates to never give up, even if the job they originally applied to didn’t work out.

Are there any positions or types of candidates you are particularly focused on hiring in this coming year?

We're always looking for passionate, talented people. This year, we’re looking to increase the number of skincare experts we hire. Sephora has always been known as a place to build a career in Makeup and Artistry, but we’re doubling down in the skincare category and looking for experienced retail leaders with a passion for skincare or former aestheticians who have an interest in retail. Additionally, we’re always looking for strong merchants and digital/technical talent to join us in our Field Support Center (corporate office).
