Perks and Programs

We asked SendGrid to share a few programs they feel really capture what's unique about their workplace. Here is what they had to say.

  • Annual Kick Off Trip & Summer Alignment: SendGrid believes in building a strong and connected team, so we host two retreats a year to give Gridders a chance to align around company objectives and spend quality time bonding - gathering together in Colorado during the summer for KASA (Kick Ass Summer Alignment) and traveling abroad to the beaches of Mexico in the winter for KAKO (Kick Ass Kick Off although, next year's KAKO will be in Arizona), our outings are filled with team- building exercises and plenty of time to build genuine friendships. It’s important to note that we fly all regular full and part-time Gridders to these locations, 100% paid for, because we feel so strongly about aligning the workforce to our vision and strategy - we know this alignment and connective tissue is key to achieving our goals and having a highly engaged team.
  • Food: We provide a daily meal allowance to be used at select local restaurants. In addition, have many breakfast options to choose from each morning and we stock our kitchens with healthy and delicious snacks so Gridders can refuel on the go.
  • Prism / Diversity & Inclusion: Prism is an initiative that is designed to make SendGrid a more diverse and inclusive workplace. We conduct D&I surveys and create action items for areas that we believe will have the greatest impact on our goals of being a place where as we say "not only are you invited to the're comfortable enough to dance!" We dedicate 270 hours of diversity recruiting to create a more richly diverse candidate pipeline and enhanced our internal D&I education and implemented exercises to increase awareness.
  • Onboarding: We invest a full 3 days oboarding our new hires to ensure they are well grounded in our business, our processes, and our culture. Each new hire team forms a cohort which provides them with additional support as they acclimate to SendGrid and includes sponsorship from a more senior member of the SendGrid family. All onboarding classes also spend open Q&A time with our CEO to discuss culture, his leadership style and ask any questions that they have of him. Other onboarding offerings are provided such as 100 day lunches and additional training. We also follow up with each new Gridder at 30 and 90 days with a detailed survey to better understand their onboarding experience. This allows us to make changes in the program that enhance and improve the effectiveness of the program. Gridders.
  • Employee Recognition: SendGrid's Employee Recognition Program seeks to create and nurture an extraordinary culture of recognition and appreciation by way of quarterly awards. When Gridders are truly engaged, they are emotionally invested and ‘the organization’ becomes ‘my organization.’ Our four quarterly award categories are specifically tied to the things we value, cultural language, and organizational goals. Gridders nominate peers, managers, direct reports, and teams with heart-felt nominations. A cross-functional Recognition Committee reviews and scores nominations, and then the highest scoring nominees are announced at our quarterly meetings. All award winners receive a recognition award as well as an "experience" award up to a specific dollar value. In addition, we promote ongoing recognition within teams and have a peer-to-peer recognition tool that promotes "Gridder Gratitude" that is published weekly.
  • Parental Leave: SendGrid champions the choice for Gridders to grow their families and we know caring for a new child is an exciting time that also takes some adjusting. SendGrid pays 5 weeks of Parental Leave at 100% of salary for parents who take time away from work to care for their new child (to be used within 6 months following date of birth or adoption). This is in addition to any disability coverage. Our purpose is to provide the much needed bonding time without creating financial concerns for our Gridders. To qualify for this leave, Gridders must be employed by SendGrid for at least 3 months as a full-time or part-time Gridder. In addition, we send a meal to the new family along with a beautiful, embroidered baby blanket as part of our surprise and delight program.
  • Parking/Commuting: All Gridders are offered parking passes (if needed and available) at a nearby or building connected parking garage. Dependent upon office location, they may be eligible to receive a commuting allowance in place of a parking pass. Gridders who live in the surrounding Boulder, Colorado area have the option to ride on one of two SendGrid branded buses equipped with Wi-Fi, tables, and power outlets. This is the first Wi-Fi shuttle bus offered in Colorado and riders ride in the fast lane to help shorten their commute time.
  • Equity: Each Gridders is a valued contributor to SendGrid’s success and we believe they should share in the monetary rewards that come from that success. Our equity plan is designed to create a shareholder mindset for all Gridders and is part of each new Gridder’s compensation package.
  • Cell Phone Allowance: Whether using cellphones to play the latest and greatest game, or sending cohorts emojis, there is a high likelihood Gridders may use their cell phone for work related purposes. For that reason, we provide a $75/month allowance that is directly added to paychecks -- no matter what and without having to fill in a monthly expense report.
  • Wellness Allowance: We are advocates for healthy lifestyles and encourage our Gridders to pursue healthy passions outside of the Grid - we provide a $100 per month wellness allowance directly added to the paycheck of full-time Gridders. Examples of how this perk can be utilized for healthy living include institution memberships (gyms, wellness spas, and the like), fitness products, race entries, massages, etc. In addition to this wellness allowance, we also have a 24/7 gym in our headquarters in Denver that is accessible to all Gridders.

How to Get Hired

We asked SendGrid for some inside information on how to get hired at the organization. Here is what they had to say.

What key characteristics tell you a prospective employee will be a great fit for your company?

People who join the SendGrid family are both outstanding at what they do AND embody our 4H values and culture: Honest - We are transparent and therefore share information and feedback freely. We act with integrity and our actions are those that would make our loved ones proud. We are honest with ourselves, and use data to provide the best insights. We rely on open and transparent communication.  Humble - We also exemplify a customer-first mindset across everything we do, always learning from our colleagues, partners, and customers. We are one team, focused on the “we” rather than the “I.”  Hungry - We have high expectations, and expect high performance of ourselves and our teams. We constantly look to innovate and improve.  Happy - We love what we do. It shows in the positive and constructive attitude we bring to everything we do. We know how to have a good time; life is more than work.

What can prospective employees do to get your attention?

First, it has to be clear that they embody our 4H values.  How they interact with us during the interview process and how they represent themselves within their professional networks and on professional social media sites are all opportunities for us to learn if we have shared values.  Beyond that, we connect well with candidates who show a genuine interest in being part of our organization.  We love candidates who do their homework, have a general understanding of our business, and  show they are hungry and willing to learn.  Prospective employees can connect with our recruiters or other employees via LinkedIn or other online networking sites.  We encourage candidates to follow us on Twitter and subscribe to our Blog to learn more about SendGrid.

Are there any positions or types of candidates you are particularly focused on hiring in this coming year?

We'll continue to add Gridders in all functions over the next year, especially within Engineering and Product Development.  Over the next few years, as we scale from $100M in revenue and beyond, and continue our high growth arc as a publicly traded company, we are looking for candidates that have similar experiences of helping companies grow, evolve, and mature.  The ability to adapt to change and bring new ideas to the table makes us better, faster.
