Perks and Programs

We asked Securian Financial Group to share a few programs they feel really capture what's unique about their workplace. Here is what they had to say.

  • Retirement Savings: Securian helps associates fund their retirements with two contributions paid entirely by the company. A defined benefit pension plan provides a lifetime monthly benefit payment based on years of service, salary and age at retirement. Additionally, for 43 consecutive years, the company has made a profit sharing contribution to every associate’s 401(k) account. In the past 10 years, the average profit sharing contribution, which associates receive regardless of their own contributions, has been more than 7.6 percent of salary. Lastly, Securian provides subsidized retiree medical coverage for both pre- and post-65 retirees.
  • Strategy Engagement: More than 200 associates (almost 8 percent) actively lead, shape or execute Vision 2020—Securian’s five-year enterprise strategic plan – including the development of new, customer-centric product, digital and marketing capabilities. In contrast to a typical top-down strategy, Securian uses a many-hands-on-deck approach to prepare the company and associates for future growth. To keep all associates connected to Vision 2020 strategy work, the company regularly hosts brown bag lunch presentations and shares articles and videos with progress updates.
  • Health and Well-Being: Securian supports associates’ overall health and well-being with: over 70 seminars held annually on topics such as parenting, caregiving and meditation; free, confidential counseling for associates and their family members experiencing personal difficulties; and fun office wellness activities such as the Great Securian Scavenger Hunt that encourage physical activity during the workday.
  • Professional Development and Advancement: Securian makes developing employee talent a priority. Each year, the majority of job openings are filled by internal candidates –providing new opportunities and experiences for current associates. High school and college internships fill summer and temporary staffing needs while providing practical business experience for students. The Management Services Development Program jump starts the careers of newly hired college graduates through on-the-job rotations and leadership training. Several of Securian’s senior leaders got their start at the company through this program. The company’s Career Builder Program is a leadership development opportunity for associates of all tenure levels who show potential for greater responsibility. The program includes training, special projects and networking with senior leaders.
  • Community Commitment: Securian associates volunteer their time and talent for dozens of local nonprofits and civic groups—punctuated by 110 board directors. A senior executive currently chairs the board of Visit Saint Paul, the city’s official convention and visitor’s bureau, and another Securian leader is the outgoing chair of the Saint Paul Area Chamber of Commerce. Securian is a key sponsor of the Saint Paul Saints minor league baseball team, the lead sponsor of a downtown summertime live music event, and the longtime lead sponsor and organizer of the Saint Paul Winter Carnival’s Securian Winter Run. Securian’s contributions to our community, including cash grants from the Securian Foundation, in-kind contributions, employee volunteerism and other cash gifts, totaled $4.7 million in 2016.
  • Connectedness and Belonging: With a 95 percent retention rate and average tenure of 14 years, Securian associates know each other well, and many consider their colleagues an extension of their family. The company supports these relationships by subsidizing a variety of organized activities, including a choir, affinity groups and athletic teams and leagues. Associates promote creative fundraising for the annual Greater Twin Cities United Way campaign, hosting annual events such as the uniquely Minnesotan Crocktober Fest where associates enjoy chili, soup or ‘hot dish’ donated by their colleagues. Connections even continue beyond retirement, fostered by an annual dinner and other social events Securian hosts for active and retired associates employed for 25+ years.
  • Sustainability Initiatives: Securian believes in reducing our impact on the environment and continuously seeks sustainability improvement. In 2016, Securian’s accomplishments included: 1,230 tons of recycled paper material weight; 20,654 trees saved; 78 tons of landfill avoidance; 80 percent earth-friendly janitorial products used to clean our buildings; over 1.3 million pounds of carbon emissions reduced; 97.4 homes powered for one year; and over 1 million kilowatts of electricity savings.
