Perks and Programs

We asked Room & Board to share a few programs they feel really capture what's unique about their workplace. Here is what they had to say.

  • Benefits for 20+hours: Weekends are busy in retail and great people are needed to serve customers. Room & Board values its three-day staff members who give up their weekends to support its business. To demonstrate that, Room & Board provides its full benefits package, which includes healthcare, 401(k) and paid vacation, to staff members who work 20 hours a week or more.
  • Community Partnership Program: Room & Board believes community involvement and volunteerism are an important part of our overall wellbeing. The company provides staff members the opportunity to give up to $50,000 in grant money over a two year period to a single non-profit in their city that compels them to get involved. In 2014, a team from Atlanta selected Nicholas House, an organization that helps homeless families achieve self-sufficiency. In addition to a monetary donation, the delivery center brought furniture for clients, the store held a water challenge where every glass of water consumed resulted in one roll of toilet paper donated, and both take turns serving meals once a month.
  • Financial Planning: Room & Board has employed a financial advisor for more than 10 years. He visits each location every other year and helps staff members make wise financial decisions. He is also readily available via phone or email at no cost to staff members. In addition to a traditional 401(k) match (of up to 50 percent of the first eight percent a staff member contributes), Room & Board provides a secondary contribution if the company meets its annual profit goal. The company has made this secondary contribution every year for the past seven years. Ninety-five percent of staff members participated in its 401(k) plan in 2015, with the majority of staff members receiving a secondary contribution of $1,500.
  • Estate Planning: Wills, healthcare directives and powers of attorney; oh my! Room & Board introduced estate planning assistance in 2016 to help staff members understand the nature and importance of estate planning, and to defray the cost of document preparation. In addition to providing educational resources, such as webinars by an estate attorney, Room & Board covers 25 percent of professional estate planning document creation up to $250.
  • Staff Member Discount: After helping customers create homes they love, Room & Board hopes to help its staff members do the same. The company provides a staff member discount of 35 percent off accessories and furniture; 50 percent off mattresses; and up to 50 percent off clearance items. Free delivery is available in the local delivery area. To make this benefit even more attainable, Room & Board just introduced a purchase program for staff members to pay for their purchase through payroll deduction over the course of the year.
  • Physical Wellbeing: Our Minnesota-based staff and their families have free access to a newly-renovated fitness center, studio and gym as well as fitness classes. Staff members can take advantage of reduced rates on onsite personal training, Pilates and massage. Wellness rooms are available at our Central Campus for nursing mothers or if staff members need a quiet space. Free fruit is available to fend off cravings. Staff members at other locations receive a $300 wellness reimbursement for ongoing fitness, yoga or massage. These locations have onsite equipment as well as a wellbeing budget of $50 per staff member to use as the team desires. The Chicago Delivery team purchased blenders so Delivery Associates could take a healthy breakfast with them on the go.
  • Paid Parental Leave: Room & Board recognizes the significance of building strong families. In 2016 the company increased its paid parental leave benefit, providing primary caregivers 10 weeks of paid leave following a birth or adoption. Birth mothers receive six to eight weeks of paid leave based on the health circumstances of their delivery and an additional four weeks of paid parental leave. Non-primary caregivers receive two weeks paid parental leave plus $500 to help cover the many costs of welcoming a new family member. In addition, a baby gift (a picture frame and a toy) is sent to new parents on behalf of the company.
  • Celebrate Good Times: Room & Board thinks it’s important to focus on building teams and celebrating successes. Each location has an annual budget of $100 per staff member to use as they see fit. Some of these events are planned, like the food truck during the Boston Store’s first anniversary, the Denver Delivery Center’s outing to the Colorado Rockies baseball game or the Technology team’s annual breakfast smoothies and catered lunch on December 26. Others are impromptu, like the New Jersey Delivery Center celebrating record delivered sales with a barbeque and horseshoes, or the Central Office’s surprise St. Patrick’s Day gathering complete with the instigator, President Bruce Champeau, serving up Irish beer.
  • Career Transition: Physically-demanding roles can take a toll on one’s body. Room & Board provides career transition support when roles such as delivery, merchandise quality and returns become too strenuous. When this happens, other roles within the organization are the first consideration. If those are not an option or a good fit, then the individual is given the opportunity to meet with a career coach to help guide them on a different career path. This includes career assessments, resume enhancements, self-marketing skills and interview tips, all while the staff member continues to serve in his or her current role at Room & Board.
  • Inspiring Environments: Naturally Room & Board’s showrooms are beautiful. Built into the history of the building, the product inspires customers and staff members alike. Staff members in our delivery and distribution centers pride themselves on their clean and organized environments. Some, like our Boston Delivery Center, have gardens to grow produce and others, like our Otsego Distribution Center, have patios for barbeques. If it’s raining outside, they could eat off the floor inside. The 2015 Central Campus remodel not only garnered Gold LEED Certification, it also features skylights and an indoor and outdoor courtyard. It’s also home to the nation’s largest corporate urban meadow, which blooms from spring to fall while supporting pollinators and wildlife.

How to Get Hired

We asked Room & Board for some inside information on how to get hired at the organization. Here is what they had to say.

What key characteristics tell you a prospective employee will be a great fit for your company?

We believe that work should have meaning and strive to hire individuals that are passionate about finding their life’s work and take personal accountability for their success. Successful Room & Board staff members are natural relationship builders and enjoy collaborating and supporting the success of others.

What can prospective employees do to get your attention?

We encourage candidates to be genuine in their approach to our selection process. Our online application asks questions about collaboration, respect and loving what you do. We hope candidates answer these questions in a thoughtful manner.

Are there any positions or types of candidates you are particularly focused on hiring in this coming year?

Room & Board Design Associates and Delivery Associates find great satisfaction building relationships with our customers and helping them create homes they love.

It can be challenging to find Delivery Associates to fill this unique role. Room & Board Delivery Associates are athletic, work at an energized pace and have a great deal of stamina. They are also effective communicators and innovative problem solvers that are trusted to work independently with their delivery partner and in collaboration with their delivery peers and retail team.

In 2017 we hope to open additional stores and delivery centers. Our Portland, Oregon location is slated to open in early 2017. So we are looking for talented leaders and retail and delivery professionals for this new location.

What should interested candidates do to find out more and get started?

We encourage candidates to visit our careers site ( to learn more about our open roles, our philosophies and what it is like to work at Room & Board. We also invite candidates to visit a Room & Board store; there is nothing like meeting us in person and experiencing our showroom environment and product first-hand.
