Perks and Programs

We asked Room & Board to share a few programs they feel really capture what's unique about their workplace. Here is what they had to say.

  • Benefits for 20+hours: Weekends are busy in retail and great people are needed to serve customers. We value our three-day staff members who give up their weekends to support our business. To demonstrate that, we provide our full benefits package, which includes healthcare, 401(k), profit sharing, life insurance, paid holidays, personal time and vacation, to staff members who work 20 hours a week or more.
  • Profit Sharing: Room & Board continues to grow financially strong and every person at Room & Board plays an important part in our success. To acknowledge everyone’s contribution to our financial health, we launched our annual profit sharing plan in 2017. All staff members who work 20 hours or more each week receive a profit sharing payment.
  • Community Partnership Program: Room & Board believes community involvement and volunteerism are an important part of overall wellbeing. We provide teams the opportunity to give up to $50,000 in grant money over a two-year period to a single non-profit organization in their city that supports our focus areas: housing and homelessness, environmental, AIDS/HIV and art/design organizations. Staff members have an ongoing relationship with the nonprofit organization as part of our community partnership program which includes volunteerism, relationship building and supporting holistic wellbeing. In our five-year partnership with So Others Might Eat (SOME), Washington D.C. staff members participated in volunteer opportunities including serving meals to those in need, cleaning and painting apartments, coordinating clothing drives and assisting at the annual SOME fundraising gala.
  • Financial Wellbeing: To support financial wellbeing, staff members have free access to a financial planner that visits each location and is readily available by phone or email. Room & Board's 401(k) program matches up to 50 percent of the first eight percent a staff member contributes each year. In 2017, 94 percent of staff members participated in the 401(k) plan. We give staff members the option to save for post-secondary education tax free through direct deposit from their paycheck into a 529 account. When we decided to set a company-wide minimum wage, we didn’t look to legislators: we looked within. In 2019 we anticipate a minimum annual wage of $40,000 to $47,000 for all staff members depending on geographical location. Consistent pay allows staff members the stability they need to work productively and live healthy, full lives.
  • Staff Member Discount: With a mission to help customers create homes they love, Room & Board hopes to help our staff members do the same. We provide a staff member discount of 35 percent off accessories and furniture; 50 percent off bedding and mattresses; and up to 50 percent off clearance items. Introduced in 2018, staff members also enjoy 50 percent off $2,000 spent each year. To make this benefit even more attainable, we offer a program for staff members to pay for their purchase through payroll deduction over the course of the year. In addition, delivery service is free.
  • Physical Wellbeing: Minnesota-based staff members and their families have free access to an onsite fitness center, studio and gym as well as fitness classes. They may also access personal training, Pilates and massage for a nominal fee. Wellness rooms are available at our Central Campus for nursing mothers or for a quiet space to rest. Fresh fruit is available to fend off cravings. Staff members at all other locations receive a $300 wellness reimbursement for ongoing fitness, yoga or massage. These locations have equipment and a wellbeing budget of $50 per staff member to use as the team desires. Examples include on-site yoga and tai chi classes. Delivery center staff members work regularly with a licensed physical therapist to stretch and prevent injuries. In 2018, all Room & Board properties became tobacco free, supported by tobacco cessation resources including a $500 reimbursement for two consecutive years if traditional resources are not effective.
  • Paid Family/Medical Leave: To ease the burden for staff members who are managing personal health concerns, family health care issues and/or welcoming a new child, we enhanced the amount of paid time away a staff member can receive for family / medical leave. As part of our short-term disability salary continuation program, staff members receive 100 percent of their salary for up to 12 weeks when they experience an approved medical leave. This includes 10 to 12 weeks of fully-paid leave for primary caregivers after the birth or adoption of a child. Non-primary caregivers receive four weeks of fully-paid leave within the first year after birth or adoption. Also, staff members receive up to four weeks 100 percent paid for family medical care outside of parental leave.
  • Sustainability: Sustainability is at the heart of Room & Board. Our design philosophies include modern yet timeless designs, American craftsmanship and sustainably sourcing products. We are a founding member of the Sustainable Furnishings Council, dedicated to raising awareness and expanding the adoption of environmentally sustainable practices across the home furnishings industry. Staff members have a passion for it as well. There are recycling programs at all locations and composting at our Central Campus. Staff in locations including Boston, Oak Brook and Los Angeles tend to onsite gardens. With a community partner focus on the environment, staff members regularly plant flowers, remove invasive plant species or clean up trash. In 2018, our Central Campus sponsored our first technology recycling event which yielded 3,201 pounds of materials to be recycled.
  • Celebrate Good Times: Room & Board thinks it’s important to focus on building teams and celebrating successes. Each location has an annual $100 budget per staff member as well as an additional budget for celebrating staff members’ milestone anniversaries. Teams celebrate everything from holidays to the first profit sharing payment to retirement. These gatherings may be as simple as a fiesta, sweet treats or a s’mores bar or something fancier like a holiday boat cruise, a Trailblazers basketball game or an after-hours tour at the Museum of Contemporary Art. Others create their own celebrations, like the annual “30th of September Chicken and Waffles” breakfast, casino night or family fun day. Denver delivery center staff members even created their own “Going the Extra Mile” award to recognize their peers’ accomplishments.
  • Beautiful Work Environments: Naturally, Room & Board’s showrooms are beautiful. Built into the history of the building, our products inspire customers and staff members alike. Staff members in our delivery and distribution centers pride themselves on their clean and organized environments. Some, like our Boston delivery center, have gardens to grow produce and others, like our Minnesota Warehouse, have patios for barbeques. The LEED Certified Central Campus features skylights, an indoor and outdoor courtyard, and the nation’s largest corporate urban meadow, which blooms from spring to fall while supporting pollinators and wildlife.

How to Get Hired

We asked Room & Board for some inside information on how to get hired at the organization. Here is what they had to say.

What key characteristics tell you a prospective employee will be a great fit for your company?

We believe that work should have meaning and strive to hire individuals that are passionate about finding their life’s work and take personal accountability for their success. Successful Room & Board staff members are natural relationship builders and enjoy collaborating and supporting the success of others.

What can prospective employees do to get your attention?

We encourage candidates to be genuine in their approach to our selection process. Our online application asks questions about collaboration, respect and loving what you do. We hope candidates answer these questions in a thoughtful manner. We’re not for everyone, so we appreciate knowing candidates have taken time to research our company and can articulate how our culture and career opportunities align to their short- and long-term career ambitions and what they’re looking for in a company.

Are there any positions or types of candidates you are particularly focused on hiring in this coming year?

As customers tend to leverage our website during the week and visit our showrooms on the weekends, our staffing model has shifted to hiring Design Associates that work a three-day weekend schedule. Our most successful hires are individuals who have other life pursuits − typically in the creative realm, who need a professional, part-time role that offers benefits and a reliable income. Our Delivery Associates are athletic, work at an energized pace and have a great deal of stamina. They are also effective communicators and innovative problem solvers that are trusted to work independently with their delivery partner and in collaboration with their delivery peers and retail team.  It can be challenging to find individuals to fill these unique roles as most people are unaware opportunities like these exist. So we are looking into new ways to identify individuals and share the opportunities.

What should interested candidates do to find out more and get started?

We encourage candidates to visit our careers site ( to learn more about our open roles, our philosophies and what it's like to work at Room & Board. They can also join our talent community to be notified of future opportunities ( We invite candidates to visit a Room & Board store; there is nothing like meeting us in person and experiencing our showroom environment and product first hand.
