How to Get Hired

We asked Rackspace Hosting for some inside information on how to get hired at the organization. Here is what they had to say.

What key characteristics tell you a prospective employee will be a great fit for your company?

Rackspace looks for people who are driven by the opportunity and the impact they can make on Rackspace and in turn our customers; if you can’t be a extremely excited about customers and provide exceptional customer service, whether internal or external, you can’t be a successful Racker.  Even in our individual contributor roles we look for servant leaders who, by definition share power, put the needs of others first and help people develop and perform as highly as possible; a selfless pursuit to greatness is key. While technical acumen and experience are a part of what we look for in prospective employees, the biggest factors we look at when hiring someone are the soft skills and ability to live by our “Core Values”.

What can prospective employees do to get your attention?

Getting noticed by Rackspace can be hard. Our teams have very specific qualification and experience requirements and on top of that need people who are servant leaders that can live by our “Core Values”.  To get our attention, you should first focus on gaining the required skills and experience for the job you want and then take it a step further and get involved in that community; if you are a known expert in your field, Rackspace will want to talk to you.  When you apply, clearly outline the skills and experience you have that make you the best candidate for the role; qualifications and experience open the door.  To be welcomed into the door, you will have to demonstrate both competency in your field as well as prove you have the soft skills to succeed.

Are there any unusual or especially rigorous steps of your hiring process that candidates should be aware of?

We want our hiring process, from apply to hire to be simple and straightforward; we understand that we operate in a competitive industry and want our candidates experience with Rackspace to be exceptional; we find the more efficient your recruiting engine and the better you treat your candidates, the more excited a candidate will be about joining your company.  Though this is true, we want to make sure we fully vet skills and soft skills to ensure the people we hire are not only a fit for Rackspace, but that Rackspace is a fit for them.  We recently started doing more “on demand” interviews and technical assessments with candidates so they can complete them on their own time and so we can share candidates with multiple hiring leaders across Rackspace.  This allows us to find the right home for candidates without as many hoops to jump through to get there.

Are there any positions or types of candidates you are particularly focused on hiring in this coming year?

Rackspace is looking to hire System Administrators and Engineers (Windows, Linux, & Network Security).  We also keep a constant look out for Technical Sales experts. People with experience in Web Hosting, Mobile apps, E-Commerce, Big Data, Disaster Recovery solutions, and/or Dev Testing are being sought by Rackspace.
