How to Get Hired
We asked RaceTrac Petroleum, Inc. for some inside information on how to get hired at the organization. Here is what they had to say.
What key characteristics tell you a prospective employee will be a great fit for your company?
At RaceTrac, candidates should model the same Core Values that we strive to achieve on a daily basis. These Core Values guide everything we do and are the root of our success. As we interview interested candidates, we evaluate attributes important to the RaceTrac culture and look for those that possess character traits such as servant leadership, fun, energetic, committed, motivated, supportive, accountable and solutions oriented. The RaceTrac Way – possessing a warrior’s passion, a humble attitude and living for fun every day – serves as a constant guide for our team members’ success and sums up what we strive for in creating an environment where our people work together as a team and truly have a passion for what they do. Finally, a candidate's growth potential within the company is considered as we are committed to people development at RaceTrac.
What can prospective employees do to get your attention?
Candidates should make an effort to educate themselves about the company – including our history, values and focus areas. For example, activity on social media networks can help the candidate learn about different promotions within our stores, our various marketing initiatives, and even information about our community involvement. More impressively, if a candidate has made an effort to visit one of our stores prior to their interview, it demonstrates the initiative and passion for learning that will help make them successful RaceTrac team members. We love hearing how much potential candidates enjoyed our coffee or frozen yogurt, or better yet, a wonderful story about interacting with our store teams! During the interview process, candidates should take an active interest in the role they are being considered for and be prepared to share their experiences and new ideas as they relate to RaceTrac with the hiring manager.
Are there any positions or types of candidates you are particularly focused on hiring in this coming year?
When recruiting for our stores, we are focused on hiring part-time Guest Service Associates who have flexible schedules. In the past, many of these new hires have been promoted into management within 18 months of employment. Growth potential is also an important characteristic in our candidates at the Store Support Center. We are always in pursuit of top talent but also leverage our summer intern program as a pipeline for excellent full-time candidates. We seek best in class talent through this 10-week internship that gives college juniors and seniors an opportunity to gain professional work experience in their field of study and through collaborative group projects. Career opportunities are being created every day in the stores and the SSC as RaceTrac continues to expand the current store count in each of our markets.
What should interested candidates do to find out more and get started?
Candidates can log on to our website (www.racetrac.com) to learn more about the company, the roles we have available and the application process. Social networks, such as Facebook, LinkedIn, and Twitter, can also provide additional insight on things like open positions, promotions and information about local events. If a candidate knows a current RaceTrac team member, they can reach out to them to share their interest in our numerous career opportunities. Current employees have the opportunity to recommend top talent for open roles that appear to be a fit with the individual’s skill set. We love sharing our culture with our store guests and applicants alike. In fact, many current employees joined the company after experiencing our culture first hand as a guest in the stores!
