Perks and Programs

We asked Quora, Inc. to share a few programs they feel really capture what's unique about their workplace. Here is what they had to say.

  • Quora Cares: Quora Cares is an employee-led community service group, which hosts fundraisers and donation drives for global and local causes, such as victims of the recent wildfires in Northern California. Every Friday morning, a team from Quora Cares volunteers at local charity Hope's Corner, helping prepare the venue to host a free Saturday morning breakfast for hungry people in the Mountain View community.
  • Quoraversary Celebrations: For employee anniversaries, better known as "Quoraversaries," employees are individually recognized by Quora's CEO during the weekly all-hands meeting. They also receive oversized red number balloons and stitched badge to help celebrate.
  • On-site Massages: Quora has an on-site massage therapist M-F in a private room. All employees can sign up for a 30-minute subsidized massage every two weeks. The idea behind this perk is to promote wellness and prevent repetitive stress injuries that can happen when sitting too long at a desk.
  • Catered Meals & Rotating Snacks: Quora offers catered breakfast, lunch, and dinner 5 days a week to employees and also provides fully stocked micro-kitchens throughout the office. Quora makes freshly popped popcorn every Wednesday and frequently delivers boba tea to employees. Quora monitors popular snacks and rotates new and healthy options in every month.
  • Quarterly "Offroad" Hack Weeks: Before starting each new quarter, we set aside our day-to-day work for a week called Offroad and devote ourselves to projects we think could have a significant impact but have yet to be prioritized. Offroad brings employees together from across the company to explore new product areas, hone skills, and bond with coworkers over exciting challenges. Each Offroad has a theme that relates either to the time of year (e.g. Hacktoberfest) or the number of the Offroad (e.g. Sweet XVI) and decorations, treats and events throughout the week align with the theme. Unlike all night "hackathons", Quora's Offroad week allows for more thoughtful development of new products and is more friendly to employees with familes to participate.
  • Annual Company Retreat: Every year, the entire company takes a 2-3 day company retreat to a destination like Yosemite, Monterey, Napa or Tahoe. We go on hikes, do yoga, play board games, have a casino night, do karaoke, make s'mores, and of course, write on Quora!
  • One-on-one Ergonomic Evaluations: Quora offers one-on-one ergonomic support in the form of counseling and equipment. The individual session is a 30-minute visit to the workstation, designed to cover the basic principles of proper posture and body mechanics while working at the computer. At the end of a visit, employees are more aware of how a job task is best executed and how to reduce the risk of injury in the tasks they perform regularly. Employees also receive any equipment they need to personalize their workstation.
  • Employee-led Passion Groups: Quora encourages employees to create groups around a hobby or passion to foster cross-functional teamwork. There are groups for running (which runs a relay from wine country to Santa Cruz every year), chocolate tasting, a cappella singing (Quorapella), rock climbing, coffee lovers, dogs, escape rooms, spicy food, learning Japanese, and more.
  • Women at Quora: Quora's women's group organizes monthly events for women to learn from one another, grow as leaders, and get to know each another better. Recent events include a workshop on managing conflict, a Q&A with the VP of People and VP of Sales (both women) about developing your career, and an afternoon of making succulent terrariums.
  • Quora Badges: Employees receive stitched, velcro badges for special occasions such as yearly "Quoraversaries", quarterly "Offroad" hack weeks, and completion of engineering "bootcamp". There is even a "fish" badge for people who report "phishing" attempts. Employees often display badges on their monitors or desks.

What key characteristics tell you a prospective employee will be a great fit for your company?

Aside from the expertise required for the job, it is important for prospective employee to align with the core values of Quora. Quora's 5 core values as an organization are: Mission First. We place long-term, collective impact ahead of personal achievement. Drive. We aim high and do whatever it takes to get things done. Agility. We are nimble in our processes and systems, ready to adapt to a changing world. Awareness. We are rigorous in our decisions and candid in our communication. Pragmatism. We stay grounded in the outcomes that truly matter for our mission.

What can prospective employees do to get your attention?

Our company mission is to share and grow the world's knowledge and it is great to see prospective employees with the same passion. Prospective employees can write and contribute to content on Quora as well as develop and promote their own personal projects. These projects can be either industry specific or a passion/area of interest.

Are there any positions or types of candidates you are particularly focused on hiring in this coming year?

We are especially focused on hiring machine learning engineers responsible for building systems and processes that apply to machine learning technologies. We are seeking a range of candidates, from those who focus on more research or data-heavy types of feature engineering to those who do more development-heavy types of system engineering. We are also hiring account executives, account specialists and ads strategists for our growing advertising sales team.
