  • A “For-More-Than-Profit” Organization: Quicken Loans’ philanthropic strategy focuses on investments in housing stability, entrepreneurship, education and employment, public space activation, community sponsorships and team member engagement in Detroit. Through its For-More-Than-Profit model, the Quicken Loans Community Fund brings together for-profit businesses and non-profit investments. This team is dedicated to investing alongside community partners to build social, racial and financial equity throughout the Rock Family of Companies’ home cities: Detroit, Cleveland, Charlotte and Phoenix. Since 2010, we’ve directly contributed more than $150 million to numerous organizations and programming, as well as over 500,000 team member volunteer hours nationwide. For us, giving back to the community is a business imperative, yet our impact cannot simply be measured by numbers in a spreadsheet. We depend on our people to be good stewards charity, kindness, support and collaboration in the community that surrounds us.
  • Detroit Revitalization: Since moving our headquarters downtown in 2011, Quicken Loans has ignited a renaissance in Detroit. Our Family of Companies has committed $3.9 billion to major real estate developments, both planned and currently in development. This includes a major addition to our the One Campus Martius building, restoration of the historic Book Tower and two new building projects at the Hudson’s Site and Monroe Blocks, which will become mixed-used spaces for residency, retail and office space. Additionally, we helped install the QLINE, a 6.6-mile-long railway system, sponsor six downtown parks and help put on events that preserve the unique history of Detroit (i.e., America’s Thanksgiving Parade, Detroit Jazz Festival and MOVEMENT electronic music festival).
  • Supporting Detroit Homeowners: In an effort to bridge the home financing market and stabilize communities, we developed some programs to encourage homeownership and restore Detroit’s historic neighborhoods. We started by spearheading the Detroit Blight Task Force, identifying blighted homes either for demolition or our Rehabbed and Ready program. Rehabbed and Ready aims to resolve the gap between appraised value and market value in single-family Detroit neighborhoods. To achieve this, we help rehabilitate the homes – including brand new amenities, like custom granite countertops, kitchen appliances, fully updated plumbing and electrical systems, high-efficiency furnaces and more – to be sold at a discount in order to promote homeownership our neighborhoods. Since the program’s inception in 2014, we’ve committed $5 million to rehab 55 homes in Detroit. Another homeownership program, Rent to Own, helps pull rental homes out of tax foreclosure, giving current rental residents the opportunity to purchase the home for between $2,500 and $5,500.
  • Supporting Entrepreneurship: Though we’ve been around 33-plus years, it’s our startup mentality that keeps us going. In order to lift up other local startups, we host an annual “Quicken Loans Detroit Demo Day” contest, as part of a larger Detroit-wide Startup Week celebration. With Detroit being the high-tech hub of the Midwest, we do our part in helping startups launch, grow and raise capital. In 2018, over 500 startups and small businesses applied to compete for a share of $1.2 million in funding committed by Quicken Loans. 15 finalists, selected by a panel of 12 local business leaders, pitched their businesses during the Quicken Loans Detroit Demo Day competition, where seven total winners were selected from Start, Grow and Scale categories. Quicken Loans Detroit Demo Day and our commitment to promoting entrepreneurship are part of Quicken Loans’ bold goal to bring 1,000 new businesses from ideation to action each and every year.
  • Education as a Benefit: Giving team members resources to invest in their growth is critical to professional and personal development, so we created “The Journey,” an umbrella for several road-mapped programs, each designed specifically for individuals, current leaders, prospective leaders or entire teams. These programs develop team members at every stage, from interns and new hires, to team leaders, senior executives and even our CEO. Examples include, “Leading Yourself” for new team members, “Ante to Lead” for current leaders to effectively drive our culture and elevate their teams and “Red Door Project,” a six-month mentorship, pairing senior leaders with rising leaders. We offer tuition reimbursement for accredited colleges and universities, as well as professional seminars, certifications and workshops. We also offer “edX,” which includes free high-quality courses to jumpstart higher education and professional development, and all team members are encouraged to enroll in coding boot camps with our local technology training partner, Grand Circus.
  • Technology Training: Technology is vital here, so we see ourselves as a technology company that writes mortgages. We also believe professional growth happens both vertically and laterally, so we created an internal “technology university” – Tech U – to offer technology training to our team members regardless of their level of technological savvy. Tech U offers classes in coding basics to give team members a better understanding of what their technology colleagues work on every day, or to potentially ignite a career shift into one of our many technology roles. We also offer both one-time and longer term courses in everything from project management and object-oriented programming, to advanced courses in C#, SQL and TFS Query, in addition to a 16-week, full-time software developer training program. This program, which we call Dev.Build(), features instructor-led courses and self-driven lessons with the help of mentors and results in placement on one of our in-house technology teams.
  • Bullet Time: Creativity and thinking outside the box are huge drivers of innovation. That’s why we created “Bullet Time,” a weekly four-hour period during which our technology team members are free to work on any project they want – be it company-related or not. This time of “play” and experimentation shakes off the mental confines of daily routine and has led to incredible tech discoveries, ranging from chat and email enhancements, to ride share apps and lead generation shortcuts. Some particularly amazing examples include an Amazon Alexa Skill for Rocket Mortgage, allowing our clients to pay their mortgage with just the sound of their voice, as well as the “Empathy Generator,” a virtual reality tool giving our programmers the experience of what it’s like to use our products with a disability, helping us ensure an ADA-compliant user experience that brings simplicity and ease to all of our clients.
  • Diversity & Inclusion Programming: Quicken Loans’ comprehensive diversity and inclusion strategy includes everything from resource groups for our internal team members, celebratory events and networking opportunities, to partnerships with local charities and programs, university recruiting efforts and educational trainings and awareness courses. Broadly, our D&I strategy rests on four pillars: attracting diverse talent, engaging and retaining team members, community engagement and ensuring supplier diversity. One recent initiative we’re particularly proud of is the introduction of Team Member Resource Networks (TMRNs), volunteer groups that are formed, joined and led by team members seeking community around a common experience or identity. The creation of TMRNs – which center around topics like LGBTQ+, military experience, downtown living and wellness – is our “boots on the ground,” everyday solution for facilitating a stronger network of happy, engaged team members and giving our people both a sense of belonging and ability to expand and diversify their web of colleagues and friends.
  • Direct Access to Leadership: We are a flat organization and all team members are encouraged to reach out to give feedback to our most senior leaders. Instead of a “C-Suite,” our “Z Team” members sit alongside their team members, not isolated in some ivory tower. In fact, all senior leaders are expected to dedicate time to holding some regular form of open conversation with any team members who want to participate. One example is monthly “Face to Face Meetings” with our Vice Chairman and President/COO, during which a small group of team members are invited to join them for lunch and two hours of agenda-free discussion. In addition, our Chief People Officer hosts monthly roundtables and our CEO holds monthly office hours, rotating among different teams and business areas. It’s through this kind of raw, unfiltered dialogue that allows us to stay in tune with our people and true to our greater business mission.
  • Wellness Amenities: Beyond offering great benefits, it’s important to us that our team members have plenty of avenues to exercise and unwind. That’s why we offer dog-friendly floors, daycare subsidies, onsite counseling and access to Meditation Works, a mobile meditation studio offering 15-minute guided meditation sittings. Each team member is also paired with a Team Relations Specialist, a resource for listening and support. In addition, we have a private, two-story gym and fitness center that’s available to all team members and is onsite at our headquarters. The gym includes an upper-level track, cryogenic spa, cardiovascular and weight training equipment, a full-size basketball and racquetball court and free fitness classes with certified trainers. Quicken Loans team members also have daily access to treadmill desks, nap pods, drop-in yoga at a discounted rate of only $5 per class and kitchens stocked with various snack options and BEVI sparkling water machines.

How to Get Hired

We asked Quicken Loans for some inside information on how to get hired at the organization. Here is what they had to say.

What key characteristics tell you a prospective employee will be a great fit for your company?

Simply put, we hire for culture and will teach skills. More than anything, our goal is to find candidates who embody our ISMs (19 guiding principles), especially “we are the they.” This means that we expect prospective and current team members to embody a spirit of collaboration and consistently strive to improve themselves for the betterment of the collective team. We function as a team where there are open doors, open minds and a culture rooted in trust, which directly reflects the way we work. In addition, prospective candidates should seek improvement beyond company walls, meaning that they present themselves as respectable, kind and open-minded members of society who look to improve the greater community around them. We pride ourselves on creating a positive environment where team members are excited to come to work, give back to the community and make time for fun in our home city of Detroit.

What can prospective employees do to get your attention?

Quicken Loans’ hiring philosophy is to find people who complement our company culture and prioritize this culture above everything else. While experience plays a large role in the hiring process, we primarily look for people who will come to work with fresh ideas fueled by a higher purpose. We want people whose previous experience demonstrates trends of consistently giving their best and the ability to make an immediate impact.   Because of our phenomenal training programs, we know that new team members will become experts in whatever field they choose to pursue with us. This allows our recruiters to focus more on if the candidate aligns with the character needed for a certain position, rather than nitpicking for particular skills. Skills can be taught, but self-motivation and a positive attitude must already be present. Are there any positions or types of candidates you are particularly focused on hiring in this coming year?

As a mortgage company, we are always focused on hiring for various sales roles. We know there can be a bad stigma that surrounds the term “mortgage banker,” so we strive to rewrite the job description with the understanding that their work is the fuel that keeps our company moving.   As a leading FinTech company, we are also focused on bringing in new members with a passion for technology. With our Rocket Mortgage launch, we’ve set a high standard for innovation and challenging the status quo, so top technology talent is always needed to keep us on top.   We also continually seek to enhance the quality of life former military members through our comprehensive Veteran Hiring Program. Since starting the program, 160 service members have been hired for a “tour,” and we are proud to have more than 600 former military team members – a number growing by the day.
