In 1997, an engineer had an idea: create a fun job to get kids interested in engineering. 18 years later, that one engineer’s dream is a company teaching 100,000 kids/year. We’re proud to say we get paid to play with LEGO!

  • Get To Play With LEGO: There aren't many jobs out there that you can say you get paid to play with LEGO and this is one of them.
  • Creative Autonomy: We give our staff 20,000 pieces of LEGO, 40 hours of training, and hundreds of projects for them to teach, but what makes us unique is that we want our instructors to incorporate their interests, expertise, passion, and experience into their classes. We believe that when you are excited about what you are teaching, that excitement and learning passes on to our students and in the end, our goal is to inspire a passion for learning.
  • Flexibility and Work Life Balance: For our instructors, because the job is part-time, you still have the freedom to pursue other interests, such as school, your new start-up, or other endeavors. For our full-time managers, you are free to work out of your home and the hours are flexible. We trust you to get your work done. We believe in following our motto of playing well, which means you should have fun at your job and be able to walk away from it at the end of the day to enjoy the rest of your life.

    How to Get Hired

    We asked Play-Well TEKnologies for some inside information on how to get hired at the organization. Here is what they had to say.

    What key characteristics tell you a prospective employee will be a great fit for your company?

    One critical characteristic we look for in our candidates is their willingness to play and not take themselves too seriously.  A passion and commitment to learning and an openness to share their interests in a nerdy, exciting way.  The ability to adapt and be flexible, because when you mix kids and LEGO, there is bound to be positive chaos.  Also, a comfort in embracing who they are, as we believe, by simply being your full self, you give students permission to do the same.    

    What can prospective employees do to get your attention?

    Show initative.  Do not just complete our online application, but dive into each of the questions.  Submit a YouTube video that shows why you are unique, why you want this job, and why you would like to nerd out with the Play-Well team.  Call our staff up and ask us what it is like to work at Play-Well.  Find out if this job is the right fit for you, before figuring out if you are the right fit for us.  When you do an interview with us, just be you.  Don't answer our questions with what you think we want to hear, but really be yourself.  That is the only way we both can determine if this is the right match or not.  We want people whose first reaction to hearing about a job where they get paid to play with LEGO, think to themselves, "that's me." 

    Are there any unusual or especially rigorous steps of your hiring process that candidates should be aware of?

    In addition to the regular application, we ask candidates to submit a YouTube video asking them why they think they are a good fit for Play-Well.  We also ask the question, what would you do with 10,000 ping pong balls?  There really is no wrong answer to this question, so just have fun with it. Although submitting the YouTube video is optional, it really does help your application because it gives us a window into your personality, and it shows you are willing to take a risk. Also, after an intial phone interview, we bring you in for an on-site interview where you get to participate in one of our Engineering with LEGO classes.  We want to see how you interact with the kids and see whether you can get comfortable enough to just play and have fun.

    Are there any positions or types of candidates you are particularly focused on hiring in this coming year?

    We are always looking for new part-time instructors.  From time to time, we have managerial openings, where we are looking to expand our Play-Well Engineering with LEGO program to a new city or grow an existing area, and we need someone dynamic to help us do it.
