Perks and Programs

We asked Peckham Inc. to share a few programs they feel really capture what's unique about their workplace. Here is what they had to say.

  • MEe: MEe Goals: MEe Goals are the Mission Engagement experiences that are provided to allow opportunities for staff to touch, feel and become part of the unique Peckham culture. These goals help drive the mission of maximizing opportunities for persons with disabilities and other barriers. Each year the goals are evaluated to maximize areas of impact for the people served. The goals this year are in the following areas: Sustainability, Inclusion & Diversity, Health & Wellness, Advocacy, and Peckham University. Each year, the Board of Directors approves a Mission Alignment incentive (bonus) based on the ability of the staff to meet the MEe goals.
  • Workplace Flexibility: : Peckham believes flexibility is essential to recruit and retain today’s top talent and the next generation of leaders. Employees are encouraged to work in a manner that works best for them. Peckham encourages flexible thinking and entertains most reasonable requests for flexibility. For some employees it is working from home on occasion, others bring their dogs (or rabbits or marasets) to work, while others flex their time to take continuing education classes. We are trying to make a culture of 'YES' sure you can do that. Giving employees permission to ask for things that would make them more happy at work and increase their flexibility has been very successful.
  • Minigrants: Peckham employees are encouraged to find ways to improve the lives of the individuals that are served and write “minigrants” to the foundation for up to $10,000/year to implement the change. The foundation provides $120,000 per year for funding of these projects. Some of the projects have provided technology for deaf clients to communicate with each other, others have helped clients obtain drivers licenses, take meditation and stress reduction classes, and put on the AbilityTour cycling event to highlight what individuals with disabilities can do given the right assistive technology. Many of these minigrants become essential to either the operations of the organization or to the mission and then they become part of the annual budget and no longer funded by a minigrant.
  • Wellness Incentives: : The Peckham Wellness program encourages all employees to increase their activity and ownership of their personal wellbeing, wherever they are on their wellness journey. In addition to generous fitness incentives (up to $47/pay check) for passing fitness test (for both staff and their spouse/partner), $50/month gym reimbursement, free fruit, Peckham encourages emotional and work life balance as well by providing onsite massages, Employee Assistance programs, and dog friendly worksites. Peckham is also dedicated to improving employee health by offering $750/year for both smoking cessation and weight loss benefits. Peckham also recently started a sustainable farm to provide fresh produce to employees and reasonable prices.
  • Smartphones and technology: Peckham provides all salaried staff unlimited usage smartphones and encourages them to use them not only to stay connected with work, but to stay connected throughout the day with their family. Staff are encouraged to capture photos and videos of cool success stories that happen throughout the day that are then shown to the entire company once a quarter. Employees can have their family members on the corporate phone program and have access to cell phones and cheaper monthly bills.  Hourly workers can participate in the corporate phone program, but are not encouraged to work off hours on their phones or to make sure they are documenting that as time worked.
  • I Thrive, Work Here, Grow Here, Stay Here: i Thrive is our new leadership development program. Under the umbrella of Peckham University, we have developed an entire curriculum of training and development opportunities for staff to become better leaders. There are 12 different programs with several layers of development under each program. These leadership experiences will range from; helping develop our staff to be better and more effective and think about taking on more responsibilities, to those wanting to become entry level managers, up through mid-level managers and up to include executive mentoring, coaching and professional development plans for our executive teams.
  • Local and sustainably grown produce: Through the Peckham farming business, staff can purchase shares in the farm and collect weekly Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) basket each week through the harvest season. In addition to the CSA baskets, Peckham Farms produce is served at the Headquarters in the cafeteria where staff can create an amazing salad and other entrees and know that it was grown locally and sustainably by their fellow coworkers. The Sous chef from the café also does cooking demonstrations to show staff how to prepare and serve various seasonal vegetables and then sells all the cleaned and cut ingredients at a low cost to the employees.

How to Get Hired

We asked Peckham Inc. for some inside information on how to get hired at the organization. Here is what they had to say.

What key characteristics tell you a prospective employee will be a great fit for your company?

If an individual is compassionate and believes that people matter to them, a whole heck of a lot – if they are open-minded, respect and embrace diversity and believe that different is awesome – if they believe in the idea of allowing people to be 100% authentic and genuine, and aren’t afraid to express themselves, share their ideas and take risks – if they believe in doing great work, and being proud of the success of each individual and the team as a whole – if they put “We” before “Me” and believe in the power of community, and contributing to something bigger than themselves – and if they believe successful work is about finding the balance of work and play, of mission AND business, AND everything in between, than that individual would be a great fit for our company.

What can prospective employees do to get your attention?

Great prospective employees are individuals who through previous work experience, volunteer experience or life experience have demonstrated an interest and passion in becoming a member of a unique community. One that shares a commitment to working together to make a positive impact in providing opportunities in the employment, training and education, life enhancement and overall well-being of individuals with disabilities and other barriers to employment.  We Believe in hiring people who think people matter, a whole lot... We believe in hiring people who think different is awesome.   We believe in hiring people who like freedom to thrive.  We believe in hiring people who do great work.  We believe in hiring poeple who are proud of what they do.  We believe in hiring people who think 'we' is the password.  Last, we believe in hiring people who embrace the 'and'.
