  • Employee Ownership: The PCL family of companies is 100 percent employee-owned, and as owners, we are motivated to excel. We hold each other accountable. Everyone has the responsibility, freedom, and the power to act. Employees share in the prosperity created by their hard work. We increase shareholder value through controlled, profitable growth.
  • Performance Bonus: PCL pays a discretionary performance bonus to employees in December. It's determined by individual effort and achievement, level of responsibility, district safety results, and time spent away from home and family. The performance bonus pool varies from year to year with profit levels, and typically ranges five to 10 percent of annual salary. Performance bonuses have been paid every year for the past 35 years.
  • Encourages Volunteering: PCL makes it easy and flexible for employees to help others in the community by allowing volunteer efforts, food drives, and many other community-related activities to be done on company time. PCL also invites employee's families to events that occur on nights or weekends.
  • Wellness Reimbursement: PCL offers a $200 reimbursement per employee, per year, for all aspects of our wellness initiatives, such as weight loss, tobacco cessation tools, nutrition counseling, onsite therapeutic massages, and financial fitness costs.
  • Paternity Leave: In 2014, PCL adopted the practice of allowing one week of paid paternity leave for the birth or adoption of a child.
  • Innovation Awards: “Innovation is at the core of what we do at our organization, and it is key to adding value for our clients,” said Dave Filipchuk, president and CEO. “Congratulations to the winners of this year’s Innovation Awards, and thank you to everyone for sharing your good ideas with others at PCL.” Innovative leadership benefits both the organization and its customers. To reinforce this strategy within our company, the PCL Innovation Award was introduced in 2005. Awarded on an annual basis, an individual or team can be recognized for their creativity and initiative in finding better, more cost effective ways of building our projects and doing their jobs. Recipients receive a company-wide thank you recognition and $1,000.  
  • Onsite Services: PCL provides company-paid parking to all employees. Free beverages such as coffee, tea, hot chocolate, and purified water are always available for our employees and visitors. Some offices offer concierge services available for employees. Although PCL does not pay the cost of using these services, they are helpful to employees in managing their work and home responsibilities. Services include dry cleaning pick-up and drop-off, personal shopping, shoe shine and repairs, and shipping services. In-office massage services are also available at most locations. All offices provide ergonomic assessments of an employee's work area, onsite notary service, and access to mail, postage, and overnight carrier services for the convenience of our employees. Many employees enjoy the easy, hassle-free access to these conveniences, especially during the holiday season.
  • Sick Leave Policy: PCL has no limit on the number of intermittent sick days a salaried employee may use, and this sick time may be taken to care for ill children and spouses. Our sick leave policy is one of the most unique work/life balance benefits available to our employees.
  • Leadership Certification Program: The PCL Education, Exposure, and Experience (E3) Leadership Certification Program provides competency-based leadership development opportunities for all PCL employees. Participation in E3 Leadership gives participants the leadership tools to thrive in PCL’s business environment and in life.
  • Tuition Assistance: Tuition reimbursement of $1,000 per year or more, based on manager discretion, is available to employees to further their formal education. In order to qualify, the coursework must be job related.

What can prospective employees do to get your attention?

To set themselves apart from other candidates, perspective employees can go beyond the traditional application process, connecting with us on LinkedIn and asking questions on social media is a great way to connect with local human resources staff. If the prospective employee is an employee referral, it’s always great to get the introduction from the employee too. If the candidate does get the opportunity to interview, they should do their homework before arriving to show they are serious about the company. Additionally, it's nice to send a hand written thank you note following an interview. Almost no one does this today and it’s a real differentiator.

Are there any positions or types of candidates you are particularly focused on hiring in this coming year?

PCL is a growing organization! Most of our open positions will be in operations for the coming year. This includes positions such as Field Engineers, Project Engineers, Project Managers, Estimators and Superintendents.
