  • Employee Winemaking Teams: It is critical that every employee understand the pleasure, and the pressures, involved in winemaking - and, how each individual contributes to our goal of ultimate wine quality. To that end, each year two cross-departmental teams are created and 'given' their own vines to manage through the year. They are responsible for making all grape growing and winemaking décisions. Their wine lots are considered for blending into the final blend of Opus One, and each team receives bottles of their own wine. Every employee at Opus One is given the great experience, of being on a winemaking team.
  • Blessing of Grapes and Harvest Party: Each harvest is initiated with a traditional blessing of the grapes ceremony attended by staff and close friends. Mimosas, coffee and croissants infuse the morning as we give thanks for nature's bounty. At the finish of harvest we say thank-you for the hard work and dedication that everyone gives during the busy season. Every year we have a fun theme, and include employees and their families in the festivities. We feel that the families and children of our employees should be thanked as well, as it is they who support our employees during an especially demanding time of year. Pinatas, mechanical bull rides and mariachi bands make for a festive event.
  • Harvest Experience: There is no better way for our trade partners to understand the passion and excitement of winemaking than to participate in the process themselves. Each year a select number of Trade Partners are invited to join us for three days of work, and fun. Following a welcome dinner the first night, the harvesters meet in the vineyard at 5 am to join our crew picking grapes. As the sun rises, they are offered hot chocolate and croissants. For the next two days they will be immursed and participate in every phase of the harvest process. Each night we celebrate with a great meal. These have been unforgettable expériences for our Partners.
  • Opus One Goes to France: The culture of our company is a complex and harmonious blend of the American and French cultures as expressed by our founding families, the Mondavis and Rothschilds. To ensure that each employee has a deep and thorough appreciation of the Rothschilds and of French culture, every employee - part-time, janitorial staff, full time - travels in cross-departmental groups to France for one week. The trip includes educational visits to Chateau Mouton Rothschild and other Bordeaux wineries, as well as an interaction with our Bordeaux office staff. The trip concludes with a grand culinary and cultural experience in Paris.
  • Volunteerism Policy: Opus One recognizes that it is our responsibility to help strengthen the communities in which we live and work. Consequently, we encourage our employees to become involved in their communities, lending their voluntary support to programs that enrich the quality of life and opportunities for all citizens. Opus One provides up to one week of paid leave per calendar year to volunteer in a civic, charitable, educational, humanitarian, environmental, health, or public safety organization for each full-time employee. Most years we will organize a winery-wide day of volunteer work where we will go together to give back to our community.
  • Annual Holiday Party: At Opus One, we host an amazing annual holiday party for our employees and a guest, as well as many of our vendors. Held at the winery, our staff arrive to find the facility transformed amazingly into a winter wonderland. It is an evening in which we all take great pride in our winery and enjoy our larger family. In reflection of our core value of the importance of the individual, the family, and the community, we feel that it is important to include spouses/significant others in our events as well as our vendors, most of whom we have had a longstanding relationship.
  • Golf League and Opus Open: Employees are invited to play golf two nights per week during the summer season. At the end of the season in August, all Opus One employees are invited to the local golf course to enjoy the afternoon together. Teams of three to four are created, novice and experts combined, play 'best-ball' across the entire course. Winners receive hats and shirts, and the losing team receives lessons for next year. The day ends at the clubhouse with an evening dinner. The Opus Open is one of our most anticipated events and is in it's 20th year.
  • Magnum Program: We recognize there are events in our employees' lives that are particularly special. When an employee has a new baby or gets married, we celebrate this by presenting the employee with a certificate for a 1.5L bottle of Opus One for the vintage that corresponds to the year that the event took place. Our 1.5L bottles are released 5 years following the harvest year. So as an example, an employee that got married in 2015 would receive their bottle in 2020 when the vintage is released. Each child that is born gets their own bottle as well in the year of the child's birth. These certificates are honored even if the individual is no longer with Opus One at the time the magnum is available.
  • Wine Education: We are firm believers in continuing education, especially with regard to increasing one's wine knowledge, regardless of position in the Company. We not only support individuals attending seminars outside of Opus One, but we also provide extensive classes via The Everyday Guide to Wine. This is open to all Opus One employees and involves education and tastings of the wines of the world. We feel it is not only important to have in-depth knowledge of our own winemaking and viticulture practices, but it is important to be well-versed in all varietals of wine.
  • Foreign Language Classes: We provide on-site French classes to the entire staff, a beginner class and an intermediate class, once per week. We also provide ESL classes once per week.

At Opus One, we seek out the top talent, best in class, for each position.  Howevever, it is the cultural fit that is the most important.  Candidates must align with our core values: absolute wine quality, attention to detail, nurturing relationships, consistent purity of focus, looking backward & looking forward, demand must always exceed supply, and the importance of the individual, the family and the community.  We look for candidates with strong communication skills and a thorough belief in the value of team work.  The candidate must share the passion of working for a greater goal, beyond a paycheck or individual professional career development.  A candidate who has embodied these values in past positions, as well as displaying an understanding of our history and the passion for what we do, shows us that they will fit well into the Opus One culture.

Are there any positions or types of candidates you are particularly focused on hiring in this coming year?

With the eventual completion of a major construction project at the winery, we will expand and enhance our abiltiy to welcome visitors to the winery in a world-class manner and environement.  We will be looking to grow our Hospitality Staff and for the first time to create an on-site Culinary Staff.  Wine is experience.  Our visitors expect to have a first rate experience tasting our wine and enjoying very unique and unforgettable dining experiences.  With our expanded facility and new staff, we will be able to provide just such great moments.
