Perks and Programs

We asked Nationwide to share a few programs they feel really capture what's unique about their workplace. Here is what they had to say.

  • A robust pension and 401(k) plan: At Nationwide, we care about associates’ financial stability during and beyond their careers. In an age when most companies have stopped offering pension plans (including 70% of Fortune 100 companies), we’ve continued offering a pension plan plus a 401(k) program. After completing a year of service, eligible associates automatically join the pension plan and their benefits begin to grow. Better yet, the plan is funded by Nationwide and our associates are fully vested after three years. We’re also committed to offering a matching 401(k) savings plan. With a best-in-class 95% participation rate, we’re proud to contribute to the financial well-being and retirement readiness of our associates.
  • My Flex: We’re committed to helping associates balance their personal lives with their work lives. In 2016, we expanded our programs and launched MyFlex, a new site where associates can learn about the variety of flexible work arrangements we offer at Nationwide. These include time off, support for unexpected life events, work from home and flexible schedules.
  • Jeans, please: Extending our flexibility in terms of dress code has been a theme associates have suggested over the years — in particular, including jeans when appropriate. On March 1, our CEO announced our business casual dress guidelines now include jeans! This change speaks to how Nationwide leadership takes associate suggestions to heart.
  • Backup care for children and adults: When our associates have an emergency and need backup child or elder care, they can count on Bright Horizons, a leading national provider of care for children and adults. A care consultant can assist in finding the arrangement that best meets associates’ needs and will work with them to make sure they acquire the care that's needed.
  • Associates Helping Associates: At Nationwide, we’re more than just a company. We’re a family, and just like we care for our members, we care for one another. When associates asked for ways to help their colleagues, we created our Associates Helping Associates financial assistance program. It’s our way of supporting our colleagues who experience extreme financial hardship resulting from a disaster or personal tragedy.
  • Maternity concierge services: At Nationwide, moms — and dads — matter. Because of the input from the newly formed Moms of Nationwide group, the maternity concierge services offered to our working parents were enhanced to allow for personal nurses to help them navigate the multitude of resources available. The program helps our associates plan their entire maternity leave and their return to work. Through our Make Safe Happen initiative, we provide gifts and resources to our associates’ newborns that promote safe sleeping, as well as gift boxes that contain helpful items for new parents, and Baby Kits to help keep their growing families safe and healthy.
  • Catalyst for Change: At Nationwide, we are comfortable discussing things that matter. As a result of recent events that have impacted our local communities and our nation, our senior leaders began hosting a series of Catalyst for Change associate exchanges. The purpose of the exchanges? To facilitate a fact-based, solutions-focused dialogue between associates and our most senior leaders. Leaders and associates use the ideas and suggestions discussed in these dialogues to bring about positive change in our workplace and communities. In addition, we’re hosting a series of educational sessions that help inform associates about more about pressing topics such as poverty, immigration and community/police relations.
  • Associate Resource Groups: Our Associate Resource Groups (ARGs) help associates find meaningful ways to connect with one another and move our D&I strategy forward. These groups offer networking opportunities, develop leadership skills, volunteer in the community, and perhaps get involved in advising the business. We’ve seen tremendous growth in participation due to our intentional efforts to ensure every associate is aware of and can join any of our ARGs. Starting on day one, new associates are provided with an opportunity to join the ARGs that interest them.
  • Incentives for everyone: At Nationwide, whether you’re an administrative assistant, a mailroom clerk or an executive, we all share in our company’s success and get a bonus. Few companies can make this claim. We align associate performance with our strategic priorities and noble purpose to meet our members’ needs. When the company does well, our associates do well. We set up our incentive plan metrics so that rewards are based primarily on how the whole company is doing. This helps offset business areas that may experience difficult years, which allows us to reward all hardworking associates across the company.

How to Get Hired

We asked Nationwide for some inside information on how to get hired at the organization. Here is what they had to say.

What key characteristics tell you a prospective employee will be a great fit for your company?

We seek candidates who are driven and caring. It is not just about filling a position. It’s about embracing a personality and finding someone who has a unique perspective and passion for action. We expect associates to embody our mission and vision, and live our values. Our values are so important to us that our screening, assessment and interviewing tools are all designed to ensure the candidates we hire hold similar values and beliefs. We encourage all associates to be themselves and express their unique personality. We care deeply about doing what’s right, and we work hard for each other, our members, our partners, and our communities. When we speak with candidates, our main intent is to help them experience the unique culture we have at Nationwide. We inquire about community service and see how they embrace feedback. Are they learners who will continue to grow along with us?

What can prospective employees do to get your attention?

When we speak to candidates, we let them know the interview is as much about them as it is about us. We have a lot of unique and rewarding opportunities at Nationwide. Prospective employees should show how they match with our core values and how they are involved in their community. We also want prospective candidates to show how they relate to Nationwide’s positive culture of diversity and inclusion.

Are there any positions or types of candidates you are particularly focused on hiring in this coming year?
