What They Do

We asked National MI to explain what they do. Here is what they had to say.

National Mortgage Insurance Corporation (National MI), a subsidiary of NMI Holdings, Inc., is a U.S.-based, private mortgage insurer enabling low down payment borrowers to realize home ownership while protecting lenders and investors against losses related to a borrower's default.

Perks and Programs

We asked National MI to share a few programs they feel really capture what's unique about their workplace. Here is what they had to say.

  • Give Where You Live: This community service and philanthropy program reflects the spirit of generosity that’s an important part of National MI’s culture. All employees may submit ideas for volunteer activities and charitable giving, and an employee committee decides how the company philanthropy budget will be allocated. In 2015, our CEO challenged all employees to walk 52 flights of stairs in the San Francisco Bank of America building for the American Lung Association’s Fight for Air Climb. The first 10 to sign up for the Fight for Air event were given a Fitbit to help monitor their training. Our many other charitable efforts around the country include: youth tutoring, food for the homeless, services for children with cancer, baseball programs for disabled children and a home refurbishment program.
  • Home Runs Recognition: The “Home Runs” program is open to all National MI employees as a way of recognizing their co-workers for demonstrating key cultural attributes such as: • Delivering great results • Providing exemplary service • Creating innovative solutions • Showing excellence in collaboration and teamwork. Each quarter, all employees have the opportunity to nominate any co-worker or any team they’d like to recognize with a “Home Run” announcement. The positive attributes and success stories of nominated employees and teams are read aloud by an executive at an all-employee meeting. Since the beginning of the program in 2014, employees have nominated over 150 individuals or teams for this public recognition of unique contributions to our company, customers and co-workers. Employees say they love this special recognition!
  • Work/Life Balance PTO: Upon hiring, all employees immediately begin accruing 20 days of PTO. Everyone with at least 1 year of service is eligible for an additional 10 days of PTO. We believe employees feel entrusted by the option to take this much paid time off, and thus they make sure their work gets done. In fact, trust plays a big factor in our very low turnover. Voluntary employee turnover has been in the single digits for three years running. We recognize that the holidays are an extremely busy time, so we give two additional paid days off to use in December or January. Employees tell us it’s another reason they really like working here. It gives them energy to start the New Year.
  • Wellness Program: Our employees’ health is paramount to National MI. A fitness club membership reimbursement of up to $200/year is available to all employees. We also provide access to a wellness portal that includes online personalized coaching, support tools and workshops. Staff at our Emeryville home office enjoy an on-site fitness center. We have a state-of-the art ergonomics program to ensure that all employees are comfortable in their work areas. There is also a fruit delivery program twice a week to make sure there are plenty of fresh and healthy snacks available, free to employees. National MI sponsors athletic events where employees partake in friendly competitions such as a fun run. Proceeds go to a philanthropic organization or charities.
  • Choose to Move: In 2015, we sponsored a fitness challenge where participating employees kept track of their exercise and movement with an internal computer program. Those who “moved” the equivalent of the distance between the East and West coasts were eligible for a travel prize drawing for a weekend trip anywhere in the US and spending money totaling $1,000. There were also two weekly winners selected for smaller prizes, including fitness bags and resistance exercise bands. The overall travel prize winner chose to go to Miami for some fun in the sun!
  • Fostering Gender and Generational Diversity: National MI is proud to say that we have many women in leadership and management roles. Furthermore, we have a good percentage of Generation X and millennial employees, as well as executives with over 40 years of experience. National MI works hard to attract and retain employees of both genders and of all ages. Fifty-five percent of our managers are women, as are forty-one percent of our division leaders and twenty percent of our executives. National MI Executive Vice President Claudia Merkle was named a “Leading Lady” in housing by MReport! In terms of generational distribution, thirty percent of National MI’s employees are baby boomers, an impressive forty-five percent are Generation X-ers, sixteen percent are millennials and nine percent are over the age of 60.
  • Generous Health, Retirement Plans: National MI is proud to offer traditional PPO and HMO medical, dental, vision and prescription benefit plans with a very generous cost structure for employees: the company pays 85% of the cost and employees pay only 15% of the benefit premiums. In addition, should an employee choose a High Deductible Health Plan combined with a Health Savings Account, the plan is free to employees and the company pays the premium, as well as contributes quarterly to the employee’s Health Savings Account. The company also matches up to 4% of eligible employee contributions to their 401(k) Plans and there is immediate vesting of the company match. For the past three years, the company has also provided equity grants to its employees.
  • Care for Elders and Children: To support our employees and their families, National MI offers a childcare and eldercare program. Families who may need dependent care for family members can utilize up to 15 days of company-sponsored emergency child care or elder care. Employees may use the company-funded child and elder care benefits at 400 child care centers and for 900 in-home care agencies in the US.
  • Spectacular Parties and Events: Employees eagerly anticipate our annual company party. An employee event planner chooses a fun and meaningful theme and then works hard to make sure every detail of the party is perfect. In 2015, the company hosted a pirate party at a local seafood restaurant, complete with pirate characters meandering among the guests and live parrots. In 2016, the party theme, “The Night the Stars Came Out”, was based on awards given to six “super star” employees. Actors dressed as Hollywood stars, visited with party-goers and posed for pictures. We host a number of spontaneous employee events throughout the year, such as Super Bowl and Team Spirit events, ice cream socials and “burrito breakfasts,” and we take time to celebrate Diwali, the festival of lights.
  • Savings on Commuting: To help save on commuting costs to work, National MI provides a pre-tax commuter benefit account through WageWorks® Commuter that employees can use to pay for public transportation. The account can be used to pay for public transit—including train, subway, bus, ferry, and eligible van-pool—and qualified parking as part of employees’ daily commute to work. Additionally, National MI subsidizes the first $70 an employee spends per month on these commuting options. A good portion of National MI’s employees are home-based: forty-five percent of its workforce work from home. We also support telecommuting.

    How to Get Hired

We asked National MI for some inside information on how to get hired at the organization. Here is what they had to say.

What key characteristics tell you a prospective employee will be a great fit for your company?

         1.    Enthusiastic and Collaborative: Ideal candidates are approachable, positive and work extremely well in teams.

    2.   Customer service-oriented:   The best candidates have a true customer service orientation and will consistently provide excellent service to both external and internal customers.

    3.   Flexible & Driven: In our quickly growing business, the top candidates know how to go with the flow, excel in a changing business environment and exude a positive attitude.

    4.   Innovative: National MI highly values candidates who are able to develop fresh ideas and who can bring something new to our products or processes.

    5.   Energetic with a focus on integrity: We look for energetic candidates who would thrive in a highly effective, lean and fast-moving organization and who decide and act with integrity in all matters.

What can prospective employees do to get your attention?

We love to come across candidates who are already thinking about ways they could contribute to National MI. They have taken the time to become very familiar with our company and what we do, and know they have certain strengths and skills that will help National MI continue to grow. It’s a different mindset than a potential candidate who comes in simply to answer questions. The candidates who have put a good deal of thought into how they can make a difference at National MI stand out from the others. We also look for candidates with enthusiasm and passion, who want a new challenge and to broaden their skill set. It’s refreshing to meet with prospective employees who truly love what they do, and are eager to bring that enthusiasm to National MI.  The ability to work well with others is also something we look for as we stress collaboration.

Are there any positions or types of candidates you are particularly focused on hiring in this coming year?

We are always looking to hire great people. This coming year, we are looking to add to our innovative IT department, our customer service-oriented operations staff, as well as insurance operations.   Most of our hiring is through employee referrals. We’ve found very talented people through those referrals.
