Perks and Programs

We asked National MI to share a few programs they feel really capture what's unique about their workplace. Here is what they had to say.

  • Eldercare and Childcare: To support our employees and their families, National MI offers childcare and eldercare consulting services known as the Back-Up Advantage Care Program. Families who may need dependent care for family members who live with them are offered 15 days of company-sponsored emergency child care or elder care each year. Employees may use the company-funded child and elder care benefits at 400 child care centers and 900 in-home care agencies in the US. “Our care for elders and children program is unique,” says Mary Lee Sharp, Senior Vice President, Chief Human Resources Officer at National MI. “I receive thanks from our employees all the time. They tell me they would not be able to work without the backup help of our program.”
  • Tuition Reimbursement, Loan Assistance: In 2017 we are introducing two new programs: Tuition Reimbursement and Student Loan Repayment Assistance. Our employees requested these new programs and we are very pleased to offer them to help us support continuous learning and development for our staff. Under the Tuition Reimbursement program, all active, full-time, regular employees with a minimum of one year of employment are eligible to participate in the program on a first-come, first- served basis. Educational expenses eligible for reimbursement include books, tuition, registration and required fees such as building use and lab fees. Under the Student Loan Repayment Assistance program, which will be rolled out this spring, National MI will pay $1200 per year for up to five years to help eligible employees pay back their college loans.
  • Fostering Gender and Generational Diversity: National MI works hard to attract and retain employees of both genders and of all ages. National MI has many women in leadership and management roles. Forty-two percent of our managers are women, as are forty-two percent of our division leaders and twenty percent of our executives. Senior Executive Claudia Merkle was named a Woman of Influence by HousingWire in the summer of 2016. Shortly after, she was promoted to Chief Operating Officer (COO) of National MI. In terms of generational distribution, thirty-six percent of National MI’s employees are baby boomers, an impressive forty-four percent are Generation X-ers, twenty percent are millennials and thirteen percent are over the age of 60.
  • Generous Health, Retirement Plans: National MI is proud to offer traditional PPO and HMO medical, dental, vision and prescription benefit plans with a very generous cost structure for employees: the company pays 85% of the cost and employees pay only 15% of the benefit premiums. In addition, should an employee choose a High Deductible Health Plan combined with a Health Savings Account, the plan is free and the company contributes quarterly to the employee’s Health Savings Account. The company also matches up to four percent of eligible employee contributions to their 401(k) Plans and there is immediate vesting of the company match. For the past four years, the company has also provided annual equity grants to all employees.
  • Work/Life Balance PTO: Upon hiring, all employees begin accruing 20 days of PTO. After one year, everyone is eligible for an additional 10 days of PTO to bring the total to 30 paid days off. We believe our employees feel entrusted with the ability to take this much paid time off, and thus they make sure their work gets done. In fact, trust plays a big factor in our very low turnover. Voluntary employee turnover has been in the single digits for four years running. Additionally, we give employees two additional paid days off to use in November, December or January to celebrate the holidays. Employees tell us it’s another reason they like working here as this gives them energy to start the New Year.
  • Telecommuting and Transportation Savings: With Millennials and other generations seeking more flexibility in their schedules and where they work, National MI supports telecommuting for a good portion of its employees. Forty-four percent of our workforce is home-based. For those who do commute, National MI provides a pre-tax commuter benefit that employees can use to pay for public transportation. We do so through WageWorks® Commuter, a pre-tax benefit account used to pay for public transit—including train, subway, bus, ferry, and eligible vanpool—and qualified parking as part of employees’ daily commute to work. Additionally, National MI subsidizes the first $75 an employee spends per month on commuting.
  • Give Where You Live: This community service and philanthropy program reflects the generosity of spirit that is an important part of National MI’s culture. All employees may submit ideas for volunteer activities and charitable giving, and an employee committee decides how the company philanthropy budget will be allocated. In 2016, our employees led house renovation projects for low-income homeowners, donated clothing to organizations that prepare young adults to enter the workforce and purchased computer equipment to support an after school program for disadvantaged youth. Among our other charitable efforts around the country are: youth tutoring, food for the homeless, services for children with cancer, donating gifts to foster children during the winter holidays, baseball programs for disabled children and training programs for veterans.
  • Wellness Program: Our employees’ health and well-being is paramount to National MI. A fitness club membership reimbursement of up to $275/year is available to all employees. We provide a Wellness Portal that includes online personalized coaching, support tools and workshops. Employees at our Emeryville home office enjoy an on-site fitness center. We have a state-of-the art Ergonomics Program to ensure that all employees are comfortable in their work areas. There is also a fruit and healthy snacks delivery program twice a week to make sure there are plenty of fresh and healthy foods available, free to employees. National MI sponsors athletic events where employees partake in friendly competitions such as fun runs. Proceeds go to philanthropic organizations or charities.
  • Home Runs Recognition: The “Home Runs” program is open to all National MI employees as a way of recognizing their co-workers for demonstrating key cultural attributes such as: · Delivering great results · Providing exemplary service · Creating innovative solutions · Showing excellence in collaboration and teamwork. Each quarter, all employees have the opportunity to nominate any co-worker or any team they’d like to recognize with a “Home Run” announcement. The positive attributes and success stories of all the nominated employees and teams are read aloud by an executive at an All Hands meeting and is published on the company’s intranet. Since the beginning of the program in 2014, employees have nominated over 300 individuals or teams for this public recognition of unique contributions to our company, customers and co-workers.
  • Spectacular Parties and Events: Employees eagerly anticipate our annual company party. An employee event planner chooses a fun and meaningful theme and works hard to make sure every detail of the party is perfect. In 2017, our company party theme was “Vintage Vaudeville” and employees were treated to entertainment from characters dressed as Mae West, Charlie Chaplin and Harry Houdini. We also host a number of spontaneous events throughout the year, such as Super Bowl luncheons, Team Spirit events, ice cream socials, monthly company lunches, “burrito breakfasts,” and happy hour celebrations.

How to Get Hired

We asked National MI for some inside information on how to get hired at the organization. Here is what they had to say.

What key characteristics tell you a prospective employee will be a great fit for your company?

1. Enthusiastic and Collaborative: Ideal candidates are approachable, positive and work extremely well in teams. 2. Customer service-oriented: The best candidates have a true customer service orientation and will consistently provide excellent service to both external and internal customers. 3. Flexible & Driven: In our quickly growing business, the top candidates know how to go with the flow, excel in a changing business environment and exude a positive attitude. 4. Innovative: National MI highly values candidates who are able to develop fresh ideas and who can bring something new to our products or processes. 5. Energetic with a focus on integrity: We look for energetic candidates who would thrive in a highly effective, lean and fast-moving organization and who decide and act with integrity in all matters.

What can prospective employees do to get your attention?

We love to come across candidates who are already thinking about ways they could contribute to National MI. They have taken the time to become very familiar with our company and what we do, and know they have certain strengths and skills that will help National MI continue to grow. It’s a different mindset than a potential candidate who comes in simply to answer questions. The candidates who have put a good deal of thought into how they can make a difference at National MI stand out from the others. We also look for candidates with enthusiasm and passion, who want a new challenge and to broaden their skill set. It’s refreshing to meet with prospective employees who truly love what they do, and are eager to bring that enthusiasm to National MI. The ability to work well with others is also something we look for as we stress collaboration.

Are there any positions or types of candidates you are particularly focused on hiring in this coming year?

We are always looking to hire great people. This coming year, we are looking to add to our innovative IT department, our customer service-oriented operations staff, as well as insurance operations. Most of our hiring is through employee referrals. We’ve found very talented people through those referrals.
