Perks and Programs

We asked National MI to share a few programs they feel really capture what's unique about their workplace. Here is what they had to say.

  • Eldercare and Childcare: To support our employees and their families, National MI offers childcare and eldercare consulting services known as the Back-Up Advantage Care Program. Families who may need dependent care for family members are offered 15 days of company-sponsored emergency childcare or eldercare each year. Employees may use the company-funded child and eldercare benefits at 400 child care centers and 900 in-home care agencies in the US. “Our care for elders and children program is unique,” says Mary Lee Sharp, Senior Vice President, Chief Human Resources Officer at National MI. “I receive thanks from our employees all the time. They tell me they would not be able to work without the backup help of our program.”
  • Tuition Reimbursement and Student Loan Repayment Assistance: In 2017 National MI introduced two new programs: Tuition Reimbursement and Student Loan Repayment Assistance. Our employees requested these new programs and National MI was very pleased to offer them to help us support continuous learning and development for our staff. Under the Tuition Reimbursement program, all active, full-time, regular employees with a minimum of one year of employment are eligible to participate in the program on a first-come, first- served basis. Educational expenses eligible for reimbursement include books, tuition, registration and required fees such as building use and lab fees. Under the Student Loan Repayment Assistance program, National MI pays $1,200 per year for up to five years to help eligible employees pay back their student loans.
  • Fostering Gender Diversity: National MI works hard to attract and retain employees of all genders and ages. Fifty-five percent of our workforce is female, and many women are in leadership and management positions. Forty-four percent of our managers are women, as are forty percent of our division leaders, and thirty-three percent of our executives. National MI's female leaders have been recognized with several awards. COO Claudia Merkle was named a HousingWire 2017 Vanguard Award winner for her leadership in moving National MI forward, Chief Human Resources Officer Mary Lee Sharp was recognized as one of MReport’s Women in Housing “Leading Ladies” for her critical role in creating a strong corporate culture at National MI, and Julie Norberg, newly promoted to Vice President, Controller, was named a 2017 HousingWire Rising Star, which recognizes young industry professionals under the age of 40 who have become leaders in their respective fields.
  • Generous Health and Retirement Plans: National MI is proud to offer traditional PPO and HMO medical, dental, vision and prescription benefit plans with a very generous cost structure for employees. National MI pays 90 percent of the cost and employees pay only 10 percent of the benefit premiums. In addition, should an employee choose a High Deductible Health Plan combined with a Health Savings Account (HSA), the plan is free and the company contributes quarterly to the employee’s HSA. The company currently matches up to four percent of eligible employee contributions to their 401(k) plans and there is immediate vesting of the company match. National MI is currently exploring the possibility of increasing the employer match because we care about the financial wellness of our employees. For the past five years, the company has also provided annual equity grants to all employees.
  • Work/Life Balance PTO: Upon hiring, all employees begin accruing 20 days of PTO. We believe our employees feel entrusted with the ability to take this much paid time off, and thus they make sure their work gets done. In fact, trust plays a big factor in our very low turnover. Voluntary employee turnover has been in the single digits for five years running. Additionally, we give employees two additional paid days off to use in November, December or January to celebrate the holidays. Employees tell us it’s another reason they like working here as this gives them energy to start the New Year.
  • Telecommuting and Transportation Savings: All of our employees are seeking more flexibility in their schedules and where they work, National MI supports telecommuting for a good portion of its employees. Forty-four percent of our workforce is home-based. For those who do commute, National MI provides a pre-tax commuter benefit that employees can use to pay for public transportation. We do so through WageWorks® Commuter, a pre-tax benefit account used to pay for public transit—including train, subway, bus, ferry, and eligible vanpool—and qualified parking as part of employees’ daily commute to work. Additionally, National MI subsidizes the first $75 an employee spends per month on commuting.
  • Give Where You Live: National MI’s "Give Where You Live" philanthropy committee is comprised of employees across the company. The committee celebrates the achievements of employees who are active in charitable organizations. Twice a year all employees encouraged to submit requests for volunteers and monetary sponsorship from the company. National MI has sponsored public facility rebuilding programs, house renovation projects for low-income homeowners, youth education and mentoring, fitness challenges for the American Lung and American Heart Associations, youth tutoring, food for the homeless, services for children with cancer, baseball programs for disabled children, training programs for veterans, clothing drives to prepare young adults to enter the workforce, and gift giving for underprivileged youth. This program reflects the generosity of spirit that is an important part of National MI’s corporate culture.
  • Wellness Programs: Our employees’ health and well-being is paramount to National MI. A fitness club membership reimbursement of up to $275 per year is available to all employees. Employees at our home office enjoy an on-site fitness center as well as yoga classes twice a week. We have a state-of-the art Ergonomics Program to ensure that all employees are comfortable in their work areas. There is also fruit and healthy snacks to make sure there are plenty of fresh and healthy foods available daily, free to employees. National MI sponsors athletic events where employees participate in friendly competitions such as fun runs and stair climbs. Proceeds go to philanthropic organizations or charities. In 2017, National MI added new programs to our wellness agenda, including a presentation on personal “financial wellness” which our employees found to be very valuable.
  • Employee Recognition: The “Home Run” and "Pinnacle Awards" programs is open to all National MI employees as a way of recognizing their co-workers for demonstrating key cultural attributes such as: delivering great results, providing exemplary service, creating innovative solutions and showing excellence in collaboration and teamwork. The "Pinnacle Awards" program recognizes exceptional employees with cash awards and an engraved trophy. Since 2014, 450 individuals and teams have been recognized with "home runs" and 22 employees have received Pinnacle Awards. Additionally, our Sales & Operations Awards are given annually in multiple categories to individuals and teams across the Sales, Marketing, and Operations disciplines at National MI who employ innovation, demonstrate collaborative team spirit, deliver excellent customer service, achieve top performance, and consistently demonstrate our company culture in action. In 2018, 33 awards were given to employees.
  • Spectacular Parties and Events: Employees eagerly anticipate National MI's annual company party. An employee event planner chooses a fun and meaningful theme and works hard to make sure every detail of the party is perfect. In 2018, our company party theme was “Roar into the 20's" while "Puttin' on the Ritz"! Employees were treated to entertainment from characters dressed as Flappers, 1920's police officers and other roaring 1920's icons. National MI also hosts a number of spontaneous events throughout the year, such as Super Bowl luncheons, team spirit events, ice cream socials, monthly company lunches, burrito breakfasts and happy hour celebrations.

How to Get Hired

We asked National MI for some inside information on how to get hired at the organization. Here is what they had to say.

What key characteristics tell you a prospective employee will be a great fit for your company?

1. Enthusiastic and Collaborative: Ideal candidates are approachable, positive and work extremely well in teams. 2. Customer service-oriented: The best candidates are proactive, have a true customer service orientation and will consistently provide excellent service to both external and internal customers. 3. Flexible & Driven: In our quickly growing business, the top candidates know how to go with the flow, excel in a changing business environment and exude a positive attitude. 4. Innovative: National MI highly values candidates who are able to develop fresh ideas and who can bring something new to our products or processes. 5. Energetic with a focus on integrity: We look for energetic candidates who would thrive in a highly effective, lean and fast-moving organization and who act with integrity in all matters.

What can prospective employees do to get your attention?

We love to come across candidates who are already thinking about ways they could contribute to National MI. This demonstrates they have taken the time to become very familiar with our company and what we do, and know they have certain strengths and skills that will help us continue to grow. It’s a different mindset than a potential candidate who comes in simply to answer questions. The candidates who have put a good deal of thought into how they can make a difference at National MI stands out from the others. We also look for candidates with enthusiasm and passion, who want a new challenge and to broaden their skill set. It’s refreshing to meet with prospective employees who truly love what they do, and are eager to bring that enthusiasm to National MI. The ability to work well with others is also something we look for as we stress collaboration.

Are there any positions or types of candidates you are particularly focused on hiring in this coming year?

We are always looking to hire great people. As in past years, this year we are looking to add to our innovative IT department, our customer service-oriented finance and operations staff, as well as to National MI's insurance operations staff. A primary source of our hiring is through employee referrals. We’ve found very talented people through those referrals. In fact, in the last year, 29 percent of our new hires were through referrals. We have an Employee Referral Program that is designed to help source top talent, build diversity, find candidates for hard-to-fill positions, decrease cost per hire and decrease turnover. This program encourages employees to act as talent ambassadors and will receive a monetary reward for referring great candidates.
