Perks and Programs

We asked Mountain America Credit Union to share a few programs they feel really capture what's unique about their workplace. Here is what they had to say.

  • Amazing Health Insurance: Our PPO plan deductible is much lower than market average. Our plan deductible is $500/$1,000 compared to the average market of $1000/$2000. For employees who participate in the CDHP with HSA, we contribute $1,500 each year to the plan ($750 for single coverage, $1,500 for family). In addition, Mountain America rewards long-term service and therefore, premium payments are tied to years of service at 5 year intervals. As our employees' years of service increases, their medical insurance premiums decrease. Some employees pay as little as $20 per paycheck for family coverage.
  • 401k Matching: Mountain America provides dollar-for-dollar 401k matches for the first 5% of income employees contribute to their 401k or Roth IRA plan. This, along with a rich benefit plan was fully maintained, even in the economic downturn.
  • Fitness Focus: Recognizing the diversity of employee needs, we have a variety of programs to help support employee well-being initiatives. We have personal coaching available in the areas of nutrition, stress management and cardiovascular health. We offer biometric screenings for overall health tracking. We offer courses on overcoming sugar addiction and we have two onsite fitness rooms that are equipped to handle everything from yoga to weight training
  • Onsite massages: Every other week we have a licensed massage therapist come onsite. She offers seated chair massages for a reduced rate. Additionally, when we have employee-focused events, we bring in additional therapists and offer the service for free to help with stress reduction.
  • Innovative work space: A big part of supporting a healthy work force is creating a healthy work space. We are always looking for innovations to improve the employee experience. For example, we have begun adding sit to stand desks in various areas. We have a treadmill desk for certain members of our IT team.
  • Fresh Market: This past year, we replaced our break room vending machines with healthier fare. Where we used to offer just sodas and candy, we now have several fully stocked refrigerators that have healthy snacks including made fresh daily sandwiches, salads, burritos and more. Sales have increased exponentially and employees have expressed their appreciation that there are healthier options (including fruit and vegetables) to choose from.
  • Recognition Events: Whether it's a MACU-style Cirque de Soleil evening event or a University launch including the marching band, we like to recognize employees. With our CEO leading the way, we have treated employees to nights of entertainment featuring comedians, Broadway quality shows, fun at the waterpark and more. One employee commented, "Each year I think you cannot possibly top the last event, and then you do it. I've never worked at a company that puts on such amazing events."
  • Rescued Loans: Financial services are a commodity. What sets us apart is the focus we place on doing what is in the best interest of our members. Employees know their primary role is that of educator. As such, virtually every front-line employee has the opportunity (almost on a daily basis) to save members money by either refinancing loans or restructuring debt. Employees frequently share stories about life-changing moments with members. It’s not uncommon for these moments to be filled with hugs and tears of gratitude. It is one of the most rewarding perks of working for Mountain America.
  • AAA Conference: We set goals, but we don't do quotas. We do what is in the best interest of the member. Each year we host a day-long conference for all of our member-facing employees to drive the message of service home. Here is some actual feedback from the conference: “AWESOME!!” “Empowered and inspired me to be better.” “It inspired me to incorporate changes that add value and propel me to improve myself continuously.” “I will benefit not only as an employee, but as a person.”
  • Internal University: We invest a lot in the training of our employees. This past year we launched a new internal university that not only helps employees improve their job skills, but also supports their personal growth. All employees have access to a portion of the university that has articles, videos and training that they can continue to use, even after they end their employment. This tool truly supports our culture of continuous improvement and lifelong learning.
