We asked Mountain America Credit Union to share a few programs they feel really capture what's unique about their workplace. Here is what they had to say.

  • Onsite EAP: Life can be stressful and we know that people can bring that stress to work. Not only do we offer monthly lunch and learn meetings that focus on the various aspects of well-being such as financial and physical, we have our Employee Assistance Program counselor come onsite. This provides our employees with access to free counseling services for themselves and their family members without having to leave the office. It has been very popular and employees have expressed their appreciation for the onsite service.
  • Health Insurance: Just as we work hard to provide value to the lives of our members, we work hard to provide value to our employees. We place a great deal of focus on our benefits package. In addition to offering exceptional value through our above-average contribution to employees’ health insurance premium, we also provide a generous contribution to employees who select the HSA account. Not only does this help offset the majority of costs an employee would incur during the year, it has also helped educate employees on the costs of health care. This in turn, has helped us control the ongoing increases in benefits costs. As we have used this strategy has helped us increase the value of the insurance package without increasing costs to employees.
  • Work Perks: We want our employees to enjoy the same core products as our members. Recognizing that many of our front-line employees are in the beginning stages of their financial lives, we provide the following benefits to help them achieve their financial dreams: ~Waived loan origination fees. Any employee who has been with the credit union for at least one year can apply for a mortgage and enjoy a waived loan origination fee. This usually results in thousands of dollars in savings. ~Discounts on auto loans ~Discounts on Home Equity Lines of Credit
  • Onsite massages: Every other week we have a licensed massage therapist come onsite. She offers seated chair massages for a reduced rate. Additionally, when we have employee-focused events, we bring in additional therapists and offer the service for free to help with stress reduction.
  • Innovative work space: A big part of supporting a healthy work force is creating a healthy work space. We are always looking for innovations to improve the employee experience. For example, we have begun adding sit to stand desks in various areas. We have a treadmill desk for certain members of our IT team.
  • Employee Events: We like to celebrate as a team. These celebrations can be small (such as a Senior or Executive leader showing up with a Food Truck to celebrate a success) to large-scale events like our company-sponsored Lagoon day at the local amusement part (we had more than 3,300 people show up for our event in July). We have a committee of employees who plan and host the events to make sure that everything from the food to the photo ops are valuable and show our appreciation for employees and their families.
  • AAA Culture: Beginning with the hiring process, we integrate employees into our culture of Assessing, Advising and Assisting. Our recruiters use AAA to make sure hires are a good fit. Our managers use AAA questions to make sure the hire is a good fit within their team. We use this in our every day interactions - be they with members or our internal customers. This focus on service and asking great questions yields some amazing results. Our CIO learned that a safe guard put in place was causing more issues than it was solving and was able to resolve it quickly to benefit employees. Our front-line use AAA to serve members and save them time, money and frustration for our members.
  • Rescued Loans: Financial services are a commodity. What sets us apart is the focus we place on doing what is in the best interest of our members. Employees know their primary role is that of educator. As such, virtually every front-line employee has the opportunity (almost on a daily basis) to save members money by either refinancing loans or restructuring debt. Employees frequently share stories about life-changing moments with members. It’s not uncommon for these moments to be filled with hugs and tears of gratitude. It is one of the most rewarding perks of working for Mountain America.
  • AAA Conference: We set goals, but we don't do quotas. We do what is in the best interest of the member. Each year we host a day-long conference for all of our member-facing employees to drive the message of service home. Here is some actual feedback from the conference: “AWESOME!!” “Empowered and inspired me to be better.” “It inspired me to incorporate changes that add value and propel me to improve myself continuously.” “I will benefit not only as an employee, but as a person.”
  • Continuing Education: We invest a lot in the training of our employees. Not only do we offer thousands of hours of in-person training, we also have many resources available. Our employees can take Continuing Education courses through our internal university. Twenty of our leaders go through a business course that earns them college-level credit. And we offer a full line of exploratory courses so employees can learn about other areas of the credit union and determine potential career path options.

Mountain America has a large branch network. We will certainly always be looking for employees who are interested in working with our members.
