Perks and Programs

We asked Lucid Software Inc. to share a few programs they feel really capture what's unique about their workplace. Here is what they had to say.

  • Hackathon: Lucid dedicates three working days every year to a Hackathon giving employees the opportunity to work on passion projects. In addition to innovating and inventing solutions for the company and coming up with the next brilliant concept, Lucidites meet new people, play games, and enjoy catered meals. At the end of the three-day event, Lucidites' families and friends are invited to view the hackathon projects displayed "science fair style," while also enjoying dinner, participating in raffles, and catching a movie in the theatre we rent out.
  • Lucid University: Amazingly enough, though we are still a growth company, Lucid already has a corporate university. Lucid University provides extensive employee on-boarding, professional development workshops, homegrown e-learning modules, technical training, lunch 'n' learns, leadership book clubs, funding for employees to attend conferences, and tuition reimbursements. Lucid University is free and available to all employees.
  • Breakfast with the Founders: All newly hired Lucidites are invited to a breakfast with the company founders, Karl Sun (CEO) and Ben Dilts (CTO). Over a casual breakfast, the founders share the story of Lucid's early days and describe the company strategy moving forward. New employees have a chance to mingle, get to know one another and our co-founders, and ask questions of the fellas who started it all. We want all of our employees to build relationships and learn from our executives.
  • Annual Company Retreat: Every summer, Lucidites gather for high adventure at an annual company retreat. Retreat locations have been hosted at such fabulous locations as Zion National Park, Arches National Park, Bear Lake, etc. where Lucidites enjoy hiking, boating, paddle-boarding, and sports of all kinds. Annual retreats offer the unique and valuable opportunity to bring all teams together in a relaxed setting to set company goals, brainstorm across departments, and garner honest feedback. Much of our cohesiveness as a organization comes from the relationships we build at the annual retreats.
  • Quarterly Team Activities: Each departmental team at Lucid receives a quarterly budget to fund team activities. Lucid teams partake in such activities as playing archery tag and bubble soccer, racing go-karts, or enjoying a meal together during work hours. Some teams spend their budget on board games, books, and volunteering. Activities are designed to be inclusive and unity-building.
  • Fully-stocked Kitchens and Catered Lunches: To keep employees healthy and energized during the day, Lucid provides a fully stocked kitchen for munching. Employees can make a wholesome breakfast, find a midday snack, or eat a catered lunch with coworkers. The pantries and fridges are always filled with fresh produce, and dozens of meal options. In addition, Lucid hosts a "Lucid Libations" after work once a month for employees to grab beverages while they mingle.
  • Diversity and Inclusion Team: Lucid cares deeply about diversity and inclusion. Our D&I team's current projects include building bystander intervention training, hosting an international food night, providing empathy training, bringing in experts to speak on diversity topics, filtering and editing all job postings through Textio, reaching out to diverse groups during school recruiting, giving weekly inclusion challenges (e.g., sit by someone new at lunch), supporting non-profit groups, hosting minority groups' meet-ups, and writing blog posts on diversity.
  • Recognition Programs: Our recognition programs include a "Lucidite of the Quarter" who receives a $1,000 cash bonus, and a "Team of the Quarter" that receives $500 to spend on an adventure of their choice. New Lucidites take a "Recognition Survey" so their managers know how they like to be recognized and rewarded. Managers spontaneously reward outstanding performance with gift cards of various amounts. Peers can nominate and recognize each other publicly with "fist bumps" posted in a Slack channel; winners receive a $25 gift card and both winners and nominators receive a premium parking spot for the month. When Lucid employees go the extra mile, it pays off!
  • Special Interest Groups/Volunteering: Lucid sponsors special interest groups such as Lucid Green Team (Environmental Group), Lucid Ladies, Ultimate Frisbee Club, Ragnar (long distance race team), flag football, dog-lovers group, yoga classes in the afternoons, and Lucid Ludic League (monthly board game group). Often, special interest groups develop organically and Lucid jumps in to support them. A few Lucidites wanted to help families recover after Hurricane Harvey and began fundraising; Lucid offered to help with advertising, and then ended up matching $10,000 of the funds raised to donate to Lucidite family members living in the Houston area.
  • UTA Pass (Public Transportation Pass): Lucid wants to make getting to work easy and affordable for employees in an environmentally conscious way. Lucid pays for a UTA pass (public transportation pass) for any employees who would like to take mass public transportation to work. This pass gives full access to buses, trains, and trolleys throughout the state.

How to Get Hired

We asked Lucid Software Inc. for some inside information on how to get hired at the organization. Here is what they had to say.

What key characteristics tell you a prospective employee will be a great fit for your company?

We hire individuals who share the same core values as Lucid: (1) innovation in every area, (2) passion and excellence in every position, (3) individual empowerment, initiative, and ownership, and (4) teamwork over ego. We look for individuals who are unafraid to try unconventional methods of solving problems. We look for individuals who are proactive rather than reactive; instead of pointing out problems, they create solutions. We also look for individuals who are willing to put the team's success above their own. Prospective employees will be a good fit if they can bring a diverse set of experiences and are willing to work with others who have backgrounds different from their own. We never settle in hiring until we find the glass-slipper fit! https://www.forbes.com/sites/karlsun/2017/04/24/im-a-ceo-who-stalked-my-office-manager-heres-what-happened/#2db5285b40a9 https://www.forbes.com/sites/karlsun/2017/05/02/why-i-still-interview-every-new-hire-and-you-should-too/#24f497a97711

What can prospective employees do to get your attention?

It catches our attention when prospective employees know our products and can use them in powerful and creative ways. Candidates get noticed when they build a resume in Lucidpress, use Lucidchart to answer interview questions, or come up with creative use cases for our products. Ultimately, your past experience and skill set and what you can bring to the table are the deciding factors for us.  Prior being hired, one of our current Lucid employees, Dmitry, was a Lucidchart user from Russia. Before coming to Lucid, he would file detailed and powerful bug reports as he used the product. From those reports, it was obvious that he knew our product inside and out. Dmitry’s vision for the product and clear communication of that vision helped us improve Lucidchart. When he came to America, we knew we had to have him on our team! Individuals who use our products to visually communicate ideas impress us.

Are there any positions or types of candidates you are particularly focused on hiring in this coming year?

We are hiring in all areas of our company due to our rapid growth. New positions are continually being created and posted on our job board. Moreover, we are consistently looking for experienced software engineers to help us execute our product expansion goals. Though we are scaling rapidly, we are scaling deliberately. We are looking to find long-term fits for teams, and we will take the time necessary to find the right person for the job. Our CEO encourages us to find the best talent out there. We still never settle in our hiring process, no matter how dire the situation may seem. We are also very intentional and strategic about our hiring. As we bring new employees on, we want to make sure that managers have the bandwidth to bring on another person and that resources are in place for our new Lucidites to succeed.

What should interested candidates do to find out more and get started?

Interested individuals can first review our website, www.golucid.co. On the website, individuals can review the company’s mission statement, core values, and history to see if Lucid is a good cultural fit. Next, they can visit our "Career" tab and apply for positions (when a candidate applies, their information will be added into our recruiting software). Applicants can also reach out or apply via LinkedIn to create another point of contact with our hiring team. We have also recently published an internal job posting policy to give current employees a chance to move within the organization. All applicants, no matter what position they are applying for, are encouraged to become familiar with Lucidchart and Lucidpress.
