Perks and Programs

We asked Liberty Mutual Insurance to share a few programs they feel really capture what's unique about their workplace. Here is what they had to say.

  • Serve with Liberty: Serve with Liberty is Liberty Mutual’s annual global employee community service program, which offers all regular full- and part-time employees, including interns, the opportunity to participate in a paid day of service to give back in the communities where they live or work. Employees choose the project to serve and if a non-profit is not included for registration, they can nominate an agency to benefit from the service program. In 2018, 26,949 employees from 19 countries completed 2,759 projects and served 1,284 agencies for a total of 96,916 hours served in their communities in the first two weeks in May
  • Give with Liberty: Give with Liberty is our annual employee giving drive, which brings together the Liberty Mutual community to provide financial support to those less fortunate.  In 2017, the annual employee-giving program saw an astounding 67 percent of employees donate over $12 million to 7,837 charities. Combined with Liberty’s match, these donations total more than $18 million. Employees pledge to up to four eligible health and human service non-profit organizations from an established database of over 9,000 organizations. Employees may also nominate non-profits to be considered for eligibility. One hundred percent of each donation goes directly to the non-profit and Liberty Mutual donates an additional 50 cents for each dollar pledged with no upper limit.
  • Philanthropic Giving: Liberty Mutual Insurance is the largest corporate donor in the City of Boston and one of the largest in Massachusetts. In 2017, Liberty Mutual and our employees contributed $53 million through our philanthropic efforts and over the past six years we have given more than $310 million to qualifying organizations. Our philanthropic mission is to help our most vulnerable neighbors and we form strong philanthropic partnerships to address each of our three program priorities: accessibility for people with disabilities; security for men, women and children who are homeless; and educational opportunity for children who are living in poverty.
  • Flexible Work Schedule: We offer a wide variety of flexible work arrangements including part time, job sharing, flextime and work from home and alternative worksite arrangements to help employees balance their work and personal lives. This flexible work philosophy provides various options and levels of work-life balance that can accommodate a wide range of situations and serves to promote a more inclusive workplace. Employees work directly with their managers to develop the flexible work arrangement that is most appropriate for their job and the current business needs. Options include work-from-home or from an alternative location, compressed work week, flexible start and stop times, and part-time work. Microsoft’s Lync chat and share screen features especially make it easier to facilitate and participate in meetings with remote employees
  • Diverse and Inclusive Workplace: We believe that the power of our collective differences and similarities sparks innovation and globally competitive ideas.  Our Diversity & Inclusion team intentionally broadened the definition of diversity to include all of us and developed a comprehensive D&I framework  Employees at Liberty are encouraged to apply a D&I lens to everything they do for our employees, customers and community. Our work has helped us reach significant D&I milestones: Liberty Mutual earned a perfect score of “100” from the Human Rights Campaign’s 2017 Corporate Equality Index (CEI); we were recognized by Fortune magazine as one of the 100 Best Workplaces for Diversity; and we the received 2018 Pro Patria Award for Large Businesses from the Massachusetts Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR).
  • Competitive Benefits: Liberty offers a competitive and robust benefits package that includes: 8 weeks of parenting leave for all birth mothers, fathers and adoptive parents who have been at Liberty Mutual for at least 12 months. Additionally, short-term disability for child birth is eight weeks regardless of delivery and will be paid at 100 percent regardless of employee tenure, meaning birth mothers are eligible for up to 16 weeks of paid time off after a child’s birth. Bereavement leave allows up to 20 days for the loss of an immediate family member. We are also one of the few remaining companies to offer a 401(k) plan that provides a guaranteed company matching contribution of 3 percent or 6 percent of eligible pay contributed.
  • Innovative Environment: Liberty Mutual continues its tradition of innovation through multiple initiatives such as working with companies like Amazon to develop the first insurance-focused Amazon Alexa skill. Or introducing smart video technology that automatically delivers a personalized online video to workers compensation claimants. Or working to solve unmet consumer needs, foster new ideas and attract talent in a startup environment. The past few years have seen an explosion of innovative thinking including development of the Cat-i app to automate hurricane impact modeling; and establishment of Workgrid Software a stand-alone company to create and sell software solutions. Its initial product – the Workgrid Assistant – a chat-based digital assistant that makes work simpler and more efficient earned Liberty the 2018 Digital Workplace of the Year Award.
  • Fun Sponsorships: We are the official property and casualty and life insurance partner of the U.S. Olympic Committee for the 2020 Olympic Games and Paralympic Games in Tokyo, Japan. Not only are we a proud sponsor of Team USA, but we will insure each gold, silver or bronze medal won by U.S. Olympic and Paralympic athletes competing in the 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games; as well as those won by Team USA athletes at the 2018 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games in Pyeongchang and the 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games in Rio. This program reflects our commitment to providing protection for the unexpected. We are also a Corporate Sponsor of the Statue of Liberty Museum slated to open in 2019.
  • Employee development focused: Liberty prides itself on its coaching-centric environment with a goal of constantly developing employees’ skills to support our promote-from-within culture. Career paths at Liberty allow employees to move up or laterally within a function or move seamlessly among different areas of the company. Development and learning opportunities are offered in-house and externally through our local training partners. All employees have access to classroom, eLearning and virtual instructor-led training. Informal and on-demand programs are available. This includes extensive courses in professional development as well as technical and insurance-related topics. How to Get Hired

We asked Liberty Mutual Insurance for some inside information on how to get hired at the organization. Here is what they had to say.

What key characteristics tell you a prospective employee will be a great fit for your company?

We want employees who exemplify our core principles.  Someone who is a great fit for Liberty, has a combination of tangible and intangible skills and characteristics.  We want prospective employees to show us that they possess the technical skills, innovative thinking, and leadership qualities that will help solve problems for our customers.  But that is not enough on its own.  Candidates also must demonstrate compassion, integrity, and "doing the right thing"- all intangible skills that help us put the customer at the center of everything we do.

What can prospective employees do to get your attention?

Liberty Mutual’s purpose is to help people embrace today and confidently pursue tomorrow.  Keeping this promise means we are there when our policyholders throughout the world need us most.  It is our employees who help us fulfill this commitment.  Therefore, prospective candidates should be familiar with our values – that doing the right thing for our customers is essential to everything we do – and demonstrate how their philosophy and work ethic aligns with ours.  To do this, competitive candidates should provide examples of successful project management, creative thinking and leadership capabilities.  Innovation is key to responding to customers and remaining competitive - we want employees who can effectively problem solve, who can work collaboratively, and who possess the ability to communicate clearly and professionally.  Show us – don’t just tell us – how you and your experiences will help our customers while driving our business forward.

Are there any positions or types of candidates you are particularly focused on hiring in this coming year?

Over the next five years, we will likely hire 25,000 people worldwide across all business functions.  Insurance is an exceptionally complex industry that is impacted more than most companies by global economics, technology advancements, and high customer expectations.  To be successful, we need people who are problem solvers, analytic thinkers and leaders whose skills best fit our environment.  These are the people who will help us develop the solutions needed to meet the challenges posed by the rapid advancement of technology, rising analytic sophistication, and elevated storm activity.

What should interested candidates do to find out more and get started?

Our web site - www.libertymutualgroup.com/careers - provides detailed background on who we are, what we believe in, and why we are an employer of choice for both experienced and entry-level candidates.  Interested candidates can search our database of job opportunities – which at any time contains 600-700 openings - for a career that will make an impact.  We offer opportunities ranging from “typical” business functions – HR, data analytics, marketing, finance, legal, IT – to “insurance specific” – actuarial, sales, claims services, risk management.  All of which will challenge candidates to bring their most innovative, strategic, energetic self to bear.  Whichever path a candidate follows, they'll find a fit for their talents and an open road for their ambition. We provide employees with countless opportunities to enhance their skills and advance their careers. Together, we will provide our customers with protection for the unexpected, delivered with care.
