Perks and Programs

We asked Liberty Mutual Insurance to share a few programs they feel really capture what's unique about their workplace. Here is what they had to say.

  • Serve with Liberty: Serve with Liberty is Liberty Mutual’s annual global employee community service program, which offers all regular full- and part-time employees, including interns, the opportunity to participate in a paid day of service to give back in the communities where they live or work. Employees choose the project to serve and if a non-profit is not included for registration, they can nominate an agency to benefit from the service program. In 2016, more employees served than ever before, making it our largest (and best) Serve program ever. Worldwide, 55% of employees participated over two weeks (up from 54% in 2015) and they served 7% more hours (107,807 hours in 2016/100,506 in 2015). In total: 133,932 employees successfully completed 9,877 projects at more than 2,487 charities.
  • Give with Liberty: Give with Liberty is Liberty Mutual’s annual employee giving drive, which brings together the Liberty Mutual community to provide financial support to those less fortunate and provides an opportunity to help people live safer, more secure lives. In 2015, an astounding 71 percent of employees donated to 7,646 charities. Combined with Liberty’s match, these donations total more than $18 million. Employees pledge to up to four eligible health and human service non-profit organizations from an established database of over 9,000 organizations. Employees may also nominate non-profits to be considered for eligibility. One hundred percent of each donation goes directly to the non-profit and Liberty Mutual donates an additional 50 cents for each dollar pledged with no upper limit.
  • Philanthropic Giving: Our philanthropy is ambitious, and our aspiration is nothing less than to change lives and transform communities. In 2015, Liberty Mutual and our employees contributed nearly $50 million to our community through our philanthropic efforts to address three priorities: accessibility for people with disabilities; security for men, women and children who are homeless; and educational opportunity for children who are living in poverty. From Boston’s first universally accessible playground to summer camps for children who are homeless to a higher education resource center for low-income Latino youth, this good work is inspiring and vital. Liberty Mutual was named the number one Corporate Giver in MA for two consecutive years by the Boston Business Journal during its annual salute to the top 100 companies in Massachusetts.
  • Flexible Work Schedule: Liberty Mutual offers a wide variety of flexible work arrangements including part time, job sharing, flextime and work from home and alternative worksite arrangements to help employees balance their work and personal lives. This flexible work philosophy provides various options and levels of work-life balance that can accommodate a wide range of situations and serves to promote a more inclusive workplace. Employees work directly with their managers to develop the flexible work arrangement that is most appropriate for their job and the current business needs. Options include work-from-home or from an alternative location, compressed work week, flexible start and stop times, and part-time work. Microsoft’s Lync chat and share screen features especially make it easier to facilitate and participate in meetings with remote employees
  • Diversity & Inclusion Office: Liberty Mutual believes that the power of our collective differences and similarities sparks innovation and globally competitive ideas. To further strengthen the company’s welcoming environment and drive awareness of key inclusion topics, our Diversity & Inclusion team intentionally broadened the definition of diversity to include all of us and developed a comprehensive D&I framework that connects employee engagement, innovation and market competitiveness. The framework has five focus areas including Talent Acquisition, Development (Building D&I capability), Workplace Environment, Customer and Community and at our core Communications (messaging, language and updates). All parts of this model must work together for diversity and inclusion efforts to succeed. Employees at Liberty are encouraged to apply a D&I lens to everything they do for our employees, customers and community.
  • Inclusive Work Environment: In early 2015, Liberty’s D&I team rolled out an unconscious bias awareness program to all 40,000+ U.S. employees, offering skill building for recognizing and managing unconscious bias to improve communication and work relationships. The principles of this are now being embedded into management, learning and development and onboarding programs, as well as day-to-day conversations between managers and their employees and employees and their peers. Liberty’s D&I team launched – and continues to roll out - a large awareness campaign called The IMPACT tour to drive their message across the enterprise. IMPACT is an acronym that stands for Innovation, Mindset, Personal Commitment, Alignment with our Principles, Customer/Community, and Talent. The goal was to involve all employees and make everyone accountable for building a more inclusive work environment.
  • Employee Resource Groups: A major D&I initiative has been the establishment of six Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) – LGBT, African descent, Asian American professionals, Hispanic/Latino community, Women and allies, and Veterans – which give our employees a way to connect with colleagues in other areas of the company who they may not work with but with whom they have similar interests. Through these groups employees expand their networks to other areas and colleagues throughout our worldwide employee base. A critical component of the ERGs is the inclusion of allies, which gives employees of different backgrounds an opportunity to join and support these various communities. By experiencing each other’s similarities and differences, we improve our ability to deliver exceptional service to our customers and develop innovative solutions.
  • U.S. Olympic Sponsor: Liberty Mutual is the official property and casualty and life insurance partner of the U.S. Olympic Committee for the 2016 Olympic Games and 2016 Paralympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil; and we are also sponsor and partner of several national governing bodies for sporting events, including U.S. Soccer Federation and USA Hockey. Not only are we a proud sponsor of Team USA, but we insure each gold, silver or bronze medal won by U.S. Olympic and Paralympic athletes competing in the Rio 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games. To build excitement and support for Team USA, we host events at different offices around the country, giving employees the opportunity to meet athletes, win prizes, and feel a connection to our sponsorship.
  • Environmental Initiatives: The company’s environmental initiatives focus on meaningful energy reduction activities that let us behave responsibly for both the environment and our policyholders. We have earned LEED certification for seven owned buildings and ENERGY STAR labels for eight owned buildings. We employ numerous programs to reduce, reuse and recycle including our paper recycling program that in 2015 alone resulted in 4,115,467 pounds of CO2 avoided (the equivalent of 398 cars taken off the road), 47,692 trees saved, and approximately 14,211 cubic yards of landfill space conserved. We also have two recycling programs for excess food in our Boston facility that we plan to roll-out to in our Plano, TX campus and other facilities within the year – donating prepared food and composting unused food waste into fertilizer.
  • 401(k) and Pension Plans: We offer a 401(k) plan that allows all eligible employees to participate immediately and provides a guaranteed company matching contribution of 3 percent or 6 percent of eligible pay contributed. Additionally, Liberty Mutual provides up to an additional 3 percent contribution based on Company performance. In addition to the 401(k) Plan, we have a pension plan that is a fully company-paid defined benefit plan that provides eligible employees with early retirement benefits available as early as age 55. Employees are eligible to participate in the plan with one year of service with Liberty Mutual and are vested after three years of service with the company.

How to Get Hired

We asked Liberty Mutual Insurance for some inside information on how to get hired at the organization. Here is what they had to say.

What key characteristics tell you a prospective employee will be a great fit for your company?

We want employees who exemplify our core principles.  Someone who is a great fit for Liberty, has a combination of tangible and intangible skills and characteristics.  We want prospective employees to show us that they possess the technical skills, innovative thinking, and leadership qualities that will help solve problems for our customers.  But that is not enough on its own.  Candidates also must demonstrate compassion, integrity, and "doing the right thing"- all intangible skills that help us put the customer at the center of everything we do.

What can prospective employees do to get your attention?

Liberty Mutual’s mission is to preserve and protect what our customers build, earn, own, and cherish.  Our business is making customers whole again when they need us most.  It is our employees who help us fulfill this commitment.  Therefore, prospective candidates should be familiar with our value proposition – that doing the right thing for our customers is essential to everything we do – and demonstrate how their philosophy and work ethic aligns with ours.  To do this, competitive candidates should provide examples of successful project management, creative thinking and leadership capabilities.  Innovation is key to responding to customers and remaining competitive - we want employees who can effectively problem solve, who can work collaboratively, and who possess the ability to communicate clearly and professionally.  Show us – don’t just tell us – how you and your experiences will help our customers while driving our business forward.

Are there any positions or types of candidates you are particularly focused on hiring in this coming year?

Over the next five years, we will likely hire 25,000 people worldwide across all business functions.  Insurance is an exceptionally complex industry that is impacted more than most companies by global economics, technology advancements, and high customer expectations.  To be successful, we need people who are problem solvers, analytic thinkers and leaders whose skills best fit our environment.  These are the people who will help us develop the solutions needed to meet the challenges posed by the rapid advancement of technology, rising analytic sophistication, and elevated storm activity.

What should interested candidates do to find out more and get started?

Our web site - - provides detailed background on who we are, what we believe in, and why we are an employer of choice for both experienced and entry-level candidates.  Interested candidates can search our database of job opportunities – which at any time contains 600-700 openings - for a career that will make an impact.  We offer opportunities ranging from “typical” business functions – HR, data analytics, marketing, finance, legal, IT – to “insurance specific” – actuarial, sales, claims services, risk management.  All of which will challenge candidates to bring their most innovative, strategic, energetic self to bear.  Whichever path a candidate follows, they'll find a fit for their talents and an open road for their ambition. We provide employees with countless opportunities to enhance their skills and advance their careers. Together, we will help customers protect what they build, earn, own and cherish.
