Perks and Programs

We asked Legal & General America to share a few programs they feel really capture what's unique about their workplace. Here is what they had to say.

  • Giving Back Campaign: Each fall our company sponsors a two-week charity campaign that provides all employees with the opportunity to have fun and at the same time give back to the charity of their choice. In 2016, LGA and our employees raised approximately $856,000 for charity. Events organized by our employees included a chili cook off, creative post-it mural competition, trivia contest, bake sale, bowling, golf outing, tri-cycle race, flag football, and a bubble ball soccer tournament to name a few. Whether employees choose to participate in the activities or support others by donating, all employees find these two weeks energizing and another way to build great team and community spirit.
  • Wellness Programs: The primary goal of our wellness program is to foster a community where every employee is encouraged to lead a healthy and enriched lifestyle. The Wellness Committee is run by employee volunteers who put together a year long calendar of various events. In 2016 these events included a Weight Watchers at work program, healthy potluck lunches, farm fresh produce delivered to our office, and CPR and First Aid training. We also provide on-site access to flu shots, biometric, vision, and blood pressure screenings.
  • Retirement Savings Opportunities: Being in the financial services industry, LGA strives to provide its employees with various options for savings and financial well-being. Eligible full-time employees have the opportunity to save for retirement two ways. In our 401K plan, the company matches employee contributions dollar for dollar up to 6%. Participating employees are immediately vested and do not have to wait to receive the company's matching contribution. Our company also provides a separate cash balance plan for eligible employees.  Employees in this plan earn a percentage of their salary each year. No employee contribution is required to be a part of this savings plan!
  • Corporate Social Responsibility: LGA believes in giving back and contributing to our community. Our headquarters office is a certified silver LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environment Design) building and our recycling program saved enough energy to power 48 average American homes for six months. Last year we also implemented our own community funding website, A Little Help, that assists people through the short term financial struggles that often arise after the loss of a loved one. The company takes no profit in this site, and designed this program to allow more money go to those who need it most.
  • Training & Development Opportunities: LGA provides a wide-range of educational and training opportunities for all employees. We actively support employees who want to earn designations recognized throughout the life insurance industry including LOMA (Life Office Management Association), CLU (Chartered Life Underwriter), ALU (The Academy of Life Underwriting) and the Society of Actuaries. We have a tuition reimbursement program and a very active online learning portal. The Learning Hub has video learning, online book summaries, over 100 online learning courses, manager toolkits, and opportunities to build a career development plan.
  • New Agile Ways of Working: Employees looking for a place to collaborate and share new ideas can meet in our Transformation and Innovation Center. This Center is a hub for many informal and formal meetings with bean bag comfy chairs, floor to ceiling white boards for idea generation, and connectivity throughout. Additionally, we are implementing multiple open space work environments where employees can work together, collaborate and share ideas. We are adding a "high-tech" conference room with the latest in digital technologies to enable our employees to video conference and operate white boards remotely to ensure we capture everyone's new ideas. Stand-up desk options are also available for employees who prefer them. About 30% of our employees work entirely remotely, and we also offer weekly remote days in some departments.
  • Spark Tank: Employees who have ideas that will make a difference to LGA have the opportunity to submit their idea for a review through our Spark Tank. Ideas are initially reviewed by their peers. When the idea passes the peer review, employees are invited into our Board Room to pitch the idea to members of our Spark Tank -- the senior management team.
  • Family Picnic: Each spring all employees, spouses and children are invited to a company-paid picnic. Employees and their families greatly enjoy this day where there is food and entertainment for all ages. There is great food, music, face painting, a petting zoo, crafts, moon bounce, zipline, volleyball, basketball and mini golf. Employees have the opportunity to relax and build community and team spirit at this event.
  • Volunteer Days Off: To encourage our spirit of giving and community responsibility, LGA employees receive up to two days of paid leave per year to participate in charity work involving nonprofit, civic, cultural, social service or educational organizations. This benefit is provided in addition to generous vacation, holiday, sick leave and personal leave. Volunteering is actively encouraged. Our employees volunteer at Manna Food Center and provide events at our local elementary school including an annual holiday program and a spring carnival. Our community partnerships have included Frederick Memorial Hospital, Toys for Tots, Animal Welfare League of Frederick, Fisher House Foundation, Interfaith Housing Association, and many more!
  • Play Days: When employees have perfect attendance, they can earn up to two additional paid "Play Days" per year. This time off is in addition to volunteer days and sick, vacation, personal leave, and holidays.
