Perks and Programs

We asked Legal & General America to share a few programs they feel really capture what's unique about their workplace. Here is what they had to say.

  • Giving Back Campaign: Each fall our company sponsors a two-week charity campaign that provides all employees with the opportunity to have fun and at the same time give back to the charity of their choice. In 2017, LGA and our employees raised approximately $964,000 for charity. Events organized by our employees included a chili cook off, jack-O-lantern competition, minute to win it contest, bake sale, bowling, remote scavenger hunt, tailgate lunch, ice cream social, and a live auction to name a few. Whether employees choose to participate in the activities or support others by donating, all employees find these two weeks energizing and another way to build great team and community spirit.
  • Wellness Programs: The primary goal of our wellness program is to foster a community where every employee is encouraged to lead a healthy and enriched lifestyle. The Wellness Committee is run by employee volunteers who put together a year long calendar of various events. In 2017 and early 2018 these events included Walking Challenge, a weekly onsite farmers market during the summer, Yoga, and a tobacco cessation program to promote health and wellness. We also have an on-site gym for those who wish to workout at the office, and all employees have access to Burn Along, an online fitness library if they prefer to workout at home. We also provide on-site access to a monthly wellness library, flu shots, massages, biometric, vision, and blood pressure screenings.
  • Retirement Savings Opportunities: Being in the financial services industry, LGA strives to provide its employees with various options for savings and financial well-being. Eligible full-time employees have the opportunity to save for retirement two ways. In our 401K plan, the company matches employee contributions dollar for dollar up to 6%. Participating employees are immediately vested and do not have to wait to receive the company's matching contribution. Our company also provides a separate pension plan for eligible employees.  Employees in this plan earn a percentage of their salary each year. No employee contribution is required to be a part of this savings plan!
  • Corporate Social Responsibility: The environment is important to us, our employees and our customers. Our building was designed to meet Silver LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) which was achieved. We have hands-free water devices, occupancy sensors and workstations made of 53% recycled materials. We are also an EPA Energy Star certified building for five consecutive years (2013 to 2017). Recycling is a high priority and in 2017, we recycled over 79,300 pounds (39 tons) of paper, the equivalent of 674 trees! We also maintain a recycle program for plastic, cans and glass. We also are committed to purchasing recycled paper products. Our goal is to reduce our impact on the environment.
  • Training & Development Opportunities: LGA provides a wide-range of educational and training opportunities for all employees. We actively support employees who want to earn designations recognized throughout the life insurance industry including LOMA (Life Office Management Association), CLU (Chartered Life Underwriter), ALU (The Academy of Life Underwriting) and the Society of Actuaries. We have a tuition reimbursement program and a very active online learning portal. The Learning Hub has video learning, online book summaries, over 100 online learning courses, manager toolkits, and opportunities to build a career development plan.
  • New Agile Ways of Working: We are continuously trying to make work life easier and more efficient by allowing for more collaborations spaces and digital tools. Employees looking for a place to work together and share new ideas can meet in our Transformation and Innovation Center. This Center is a hub for many informal and formal meetings with bean bag comfy chairs, floor to ceiling white boards for idea generation, and connectivity throughout. Additionally, we are implementing multiple open space work environments where employees can work together, collaborate and share ideas. Stand-up desk options are also available for employees who prefer them. About 59% of our employees either work entirely remotely or work remotely one day a week. To provide the opportunity for fun collaboration and friendly competition, this year we added a pool table, air hockey, ping pong, and board games to our employee break room.
  • Hackathon: Cross-functional teams gather to drive innovation and growth throughout the business. These 2-day events are opportunities for employees and executives in various departments to collaborate. These teams brainstorm new ideas and solve problems to quickly deliver customer-centric digital solutions. Several new initiatives have been implemented from these hackathon events that have made a positive difference to our customers.
  • Family Picnic: Each spring all employees, spouses and children are invited to a company-paid picnic. Employees and their families greatly enjoy this day where there is food and entertainment for all ages. There is great food, music, face painting, a petting zoo, crafts, moon bounce, zipline, volleyball, basketball and mini golf. Employees have the opportunity to relax and build community and team spirit at this event.
  • Volunteer Days Off: To encourage our spirit of giving and community responsibility, LGA employees receive up to two days of paid leave per year to participate in charity work involving nonprofit, civic, cultural, social service or educational organizations. This benefit is provided in addition to generous vacation, holiday, sick leave and personal leave. Volunteering is actively encouraged. Our employees volunteer at Manna Food Center and provide fun events at the Weinberg Senior Retirement Home such as sock-hop dances and bingo. Our community partnerships have included Frederick Memorial Hospital, Toys for Tots, Animal Welfare League of Frederick, Heartly House, Thanks USA, Fisher House Foundation, and many more!
  • Play Days: When employees have perfect attendance, they can earn up to two additional paid "Play Days" per year. This time off is in addition to paid volunteer days, vacation, sick leave, personal leave, holidays, and floating holidays.
