Perks and Programs

We asked Kimley-Horn to share a few programs they feel really capture what's unique about their workplace. Here is what they had to say.

  • Stellar Retirement Benefits: Kimley-Horn looks out for the future of its employees. The firm matches 200% on the first 4% of employee 401(k) contributions and makes an additional profit-sharing contribution. Combined, these equaled a company contribution of 18% of salary and bonus in 2015.
  • Bonuses Across the Board: All of our full-time (and most of our part-time) employees participate in our year-end bonus program, which is based on individual and firm performance.
  • Robust Training Programs: Kimley-Horn offers a full slate of in-house employee training from specialized technical training to presentation and people skills to leadership development programs. In addition, we provide tools for self-directed training for employees who are motivated to progress faster.
  • Focused Women's Programs: The Lift women's development initiative—which includes career development and mentorship opportunities— is aimed at ensuring that Kimley-Horn women have the support needed to succeed and develop their careers. And our Women's Leadership Network helps women develop a professional and support network along the way.
  • Family Support: Kimley-Horn partners with Bright Horizons to offer employees back-up childcare to use when ordinary care falls through. The program also provides access to elder care, pet care, and tutoring assistance.
  • Flexible Schedules: The standard schedule at Kimley-Horn is 4 full days and a half-day on Friday; flexible hours or even reduced schedules are available for those who need them.
  • Free Lunch Coupons: For the first five years after joining the company, employees receive six coupons annually, each redeemable for up to $36 to buy lunch for themselves and an employee guest of their choice. This makes it easy for new employees to take senior staff to lunch and get to know one another.
  • VP of Fun: The firm provides each office a budget for fun activities; the office appoints a VP of Fun to make sure they happen. In 2015, that included escape room visits, downtown scavenger hunts, and more.
  • Teamwork Awards: Kimley-Horn employees are able to pat each other on the back by providing $50 Teamwork Awards to someone who goes above and beyond to help them. Peer recognition is clearly valued here—almost 9,000 awards were given in 2015.
  • Generous Healthcare Benefits: The healthcare premium for our single employees? Zero! If you want a lower deductible, the monthly premium is $23/month. And the company kicks in HSA dollars toward the deductible. Our family plans are generous as well.

    How to Get Hired

We asked Kimley-Horn for some inside information on how to get hired at the organization. Here is what they had to say.

What key characteristics tell you a prospective employee will be a great fit for your company?

An entrepreneurial spirit is what allows us to innovate and adapt in an ever-evolving market. Beyond core competencies in their field and a technical aptitude, successful Kimley-Horn employees share a number of characteristics. We look for people who are proactive, passionate, driven to achieve, risk-taking, confident, hard-working, and able to easily connect with people.

What can prospective employees do to get your attention?

We scout college campuses for employees who show signs of achievement and entrepreneurial skill. We’d love to see how you’ve achieved success—what challenge have you overcome through innovation and adaptation? Can you show a tolerance for leaving your comfort zone? Demonstrate how you have owned an opportunity and had the initiative to carry it forward?  We look for similar traits in our senior hires, along with a demonstrated ability to build a strong, successful practice that will support a team.

Are there any positions or types of candidates you are particularly focused on hiring in this coming year?

Civil engineers, landscape architects, planners, and environmental scientists who have around 3-7 years of experience.  We also routinely hire a large number of college graduates in those fields—over 250 in the past year.

What should interested candidates do to find out more and get started?

Interested candidates should visit our website at or attend a college recruiting fair to meet one of our recruiters.
