How to Get Hired
We asked Kessler Foundation for some inside information on how to get hired at the organization. Here is what they had to say.
What key characteristics tell you a prospective employee will be a great fit for your company?
Key characteristics that would be beneficial for prospective employees would include the following: interest in working for a nonprofit organization; a desire to help persons with disabilities; ability to work well both autonomously and collaboratively; and a strong sense of commitment to one's work.
For research positions, one must have interest/passion in research with particular interest in physical/cognitive disabilities, along with the ability to (in some cases) feel comfortable working in a medical setting.
What can prospective employees do to get your attention?
Possess experience in similar organizations, particularly those with a focus on individuals with disabilities. Experience related to our types of research is very desirable.
Are there any positions or types of candidates you are particularly focused on hiring in this coming year?
Research Assistants (RAs) continue to be increasingly in demand, for two reasons: (1) The RA position is one in which employees typically enter right out of undergrad (or master's program, in some cases), stay for about two years, and then leave to continue their education in graduate school -- generally a PhD program or medical school. (2) Our research organization has been growing in recent years due to significant success in grant awards received, which necessitates additional hiring.
Qualifications for an RA position include...
Bachelor's degree in psychology, behavioral or biological sciences, or a related discipline; one to three years of related experience; comfortable working in a medical setting. Interest and/or previous experience in research, medical rehabilitation, motor function, cognitive psychology, or neurologic/other disabilities preferred. Experience/familiarity with data analysis software is a plus.
