Perks and Programs

We asked J. J. Keller & Associates, Inc. to share a few programs they feel really capture what's unique about their workplace. Here is what they had to say.

  • Expanded Flex Time: At J. J. Keller & Associates, Inc., we have a culture that is rich in family values. Being an associate enables a lifestyle that includes flexibility and work/life balance. Our Expanded Flex Time program, introduced in 2018, now allows associates to use an unlimited number of hours each week to flex without needing to use PTO. This is a popular improvement to our original Flex Time option, introduced in 2016, which allowed associates to flex up to four hours per week. In addition, we advance new associates four months of accrued PTO time upon hire, and we provide an option to purchase up to one week of PTO to help ensure these new associates have the flexibility they need to manage their life and personal events.
  • On-Site Clinics & Free Prescriptions: Our LIFE wellness clinics offer free on-site health exams and free on-site prescriptions. Any associate, whether on the company health plan or not, can make an appointment with a healthcare professional at either of two company locations. For convenience, this can be during their work hours. Acute care, chronic disease management, mental healthcare, sports medicine, preventative healthcare, women’s health, men’s health, skin care, diet and weight management – all are free for our associates and just a few steps away from workspaces in our corporate and technology offices. Spouses who are on the J. J. Keller health plan may also visit an on-site clinic for care. For associates and spouses on the health plan, common prescriptions are also free and dispensed directly by our healthcare practitioners.
  • Care for the Community: At J. J. Keller & Associates, Inc. we give back and are an active leader in our community. Through associate support and a partnership with the J. J. Keller Foundation, a separate entity, we're dedicated to making the community a better place. Our associates can engage in community give-back efforts through a Matching Gifts program, which matches an associate's charitable contributions up to $1,000 per year. Corporate give-back efforts include Habitat for Humanity, United Way and Catalpa Health (pediatric mental healthcare), on-site fundraisers for causes associates choose, and other community work. In 2018, J. J. Keller introduced the Volunteer Interest Survey – a way to match leadership opportunities in the community with our associates’ skills, interests and development goals. In 2018, we matched 50+ associates to these charitable and developmental roles. Giving back to the community is also a way to develop and advance your career goals at J. J. Keller.
  • Casual Dress with a Purpose: Casual dress takes many forms at J. J. Keller – all with a special purpose in mind. The most popular purpose is to raise funds for community nonprofit organizations. Each quarter, an associate can purchase seven casual days, with the proceeds going to a featured nonprofit organization. Monthly, each department can designate a casual day just for their team. Starting this year, every Monday is Smart Casual Monday, when associates celebrate being a part of J. J. Keller by wearing a J. J. Keller logo top, dark jeans and smart-looking shoes. Finally, every Friday is Casual Friday, when associates can begin to transition to the weekend in their favorite jeans. With all of these casual dress days in place, about half of every associate’s days can be casual days.
  • Gain Sharing & Profit Sharing: Our Associate Principle of “Shared Responsibilities and Shared Results” is most clearly illustrated by the company’s practice of sharing company profits with our associates. It is the policy of the J. J. Keller to distribute a quarterly gain-sharing award to associates who are not covered under another incentive/bonus program. Gain sharing of more than $3 million was paid out in 2017. The company also contributes a portion of its profits to the J. J. Keller & Associates, Inc. Profit Sharing Retirement Plan on an annual basis, with 6% of associates’ salaries being contributed in 2017.
  • Education Assistance for Associates’ Children: J. J. Keller & Associates, Inc. offers financial assistance for associates' dependent children who are pursuing post-secondary education. Eligible costs include tuition and textbooks. For the 2018-19 school year, we are providing financial awards to 121 students totaling $58,900.
  • Mindfulness: At J. J. Keller, we believe Mindfulness has the potential to bring focus, clarity and kindness to the workplace. While the company has offered optional Mindfulness training to associates since 2016 as a way to bring the practice into their personal lives, we began formally using Mindfulness as an organization in 2017. All leaders at J. J. Keller – from team leads to executive officers – have been immersed in Mindfulness training through a session with The Potential Project, a global leader in mindful organizational performance. Later, all associates were invited to attend the same Mindfulness session with The Potential Project. Today, a Mindfulness Team is using Design Thinking to gather associates’ ideas about how Mindfulness can most effectively be applied at J. J. Keller.
  • Modernizing Workspaces: As our associates’ work changes, we want our work environment to keep pace. Some of our facilities were built in the 1970s, when manufacturing was core to our business. Today, we’re offering a greater number of technology-based and consulting solutions, with more associates in office settings, on cross-functional teams and operating remotely some or all of the time. A $6.5 million renovation of the Vinland building on our corporate campus is making huge strides in modernizing the workplace for these purposes. With associates’ input on features for the “workplace of the future” and best practices in space and lighting design, our renovated area is spacious, uses natural light and accommodates today’s work with collaboration spaces, coffee shop type areas, sit-stand desks for associates with workstations and an associate-chosen theme for naming conference rooms and spaces. Planning is in place for renovations to continue rolling out to additional spaces and buildings.
  • On-Site Chef & Cafés: Our corporate campus offers two LIFE cafés led by our own on-site chef. Prices of the café meals are subsidized by J. J. Keller, offering associates a superior value. Each day the cafés offer a fresh salad bar, sandwich bar, two soups and a featured entrée. Self-serve options include fresh fruit and vegetable, juices, yogurt, desserts, cereal, bagels and other health snacks. In addition to benefiting from the subsidized pricing, associates find value in the convenience of on-site cafés and knowing that all meals are designed with health and wellness in mind, with nutrition information readily available. Currently, one of our LIFE café kitchens is under renovation, and when reopens, our café staff will be able to offer an even greater menu of choices to include freshly grilled options.
  • Design Thinking: At J. J. Keller, we believe “Associate involvement precedes commitment.” This is the foundation for involving associates at all levels in shaping the future. Design Thinking is a primary way of doing so. Since becoming certified as a Great Place to Work, we have carefully considered associates’ feedback in search of ways to become an even better place to work. We’ve homed in on specific areas for improvement and over the past year have involved more than 200 associates (about 15% of our associates) in Design Thinking workshops so they can help shape how we communicate as an organization, make decisions as an organization, incorporate Mindfulness and design our new intranet. In addition, individual departments within J. J. Keller use Design Thinking to involve associates in developments in daily work or serving our customers.
