These values are the driving force behind our company culture and every business decision that we make, including who we hire. All of our team members live and breathe our Core Values every day, both inside and out of the office. We can all recite the Core Values from memory, and we discuss them at every team meeting. We pin them to our bulletin boards, wear them on our t-shirts, paint them on our building, and share them proudly with the communities we serve.
  • Incredible Offices: Each one of our beautiful, amenity-rich offices was designed to make team members and clients feel like they are in a home away from home. Designed by President, COO & Owner Shay Hughes, our award-winning offices offer plenty of living space and creature comforts, including living rooms with overstuffed couches, flat screen TVs displaying team members’ family photos, billiards, shuffleboard and ping-pong tables, vintage Pac-Man machines, a putting green, gourmet kitchens with family-style farm tables, on-site gyms with shower facilities, and vibrant art pieces from world renowned artists. Workspaces are a combination of glass-enclosed private offices, open workstations, and generously sized conference rooms that allow teams to collaborate. To top it off, all our offices have several “green” features and are housed in LEED certified buildings.
  • Team Retreats and Events: With our offices being spread out along the West Coast, we understand the importance of team building events to keep people connected and sustain the family spirit. Our company retreats are highly anticipated events, each one taking place at a different resort, where employees and their spouses/significant others can spend two days reconnecting with the team and one another. We also plan family outings to major league baseball and NBA games, team parties at gorgeous venues with delicious food and live music, wedding and baby showers for team members celebrating major life events, and team building seminars throughout the year with world-renowned speakers including Mike Robbins and Joe Calloway.
  • Community Involvement: Hughes Marino supports more than 100 nonprofit and charitable organizations throughout the nation as donors, trusted advisors, and volunteers. As a team we frequently participate in events to support organizations that are close to our hearts, including the Challenged Athletes Foundation, Child Abuse Prevention Center, the Navy Seal Foundation, McAlister Institute, Working Wardrobes, Autism Speaks and Feeding America, to name a few. We also lend our offices to local nonprofit organizations for events throughout the year – one more way that we’re able to give back to the communities that nurture us.
  • WOW Cards: At the beginning of the year each team member is given five "WOW" cards to recognize other team members for going above and beyond what is expected, differentiating themselves, leaving an emotional impact and delivering a "WOW!" Each WOW card is worth $50, which gives team members the opportunity to reward one another financially for delivering excellence in everything they do (Hughes Marino core value #2). WOW cards are awarded at all-hands team meetings, where the recipients can be recognized in front of their peers – an inspiring experience for everyone in the room.
  • Generous Time Off: As a company we believe in enjoying the journey (Hughes Marino Core Value #3), both at work and in life. In addition to the two weeks of paid vacation every employee gets each year, we close our offices for approximately ten days in December to allow team members to relax and enjoy time with their families during the holidays. We frequently close down early on Fridays, and give several extra days off throughout the year so that people can get a jump on long weekends. We believe that enthusiasm is contagious and happy people make great teammates, so we make sure our team members get the time they need to recharge.
  • Snacks and Goodies: Each week the kitchens in all our offices are stocked with healthy food for breakfast, lunch, and snacking. These weekly grocery deliveries include sandwich fixings, waffles, bagels, cereal, granola bars, yogurt, fresh fruit, juices, and more. There are plenty of treats to satisfy your sweet tooth too – we like to have popsicles, Red Vines, chocolate bars and gumballs on hand to keep team members happy and energized. Our offices also feature dual espresso machines that are always ready to dispense gourmet coffee.
  • Fun and Games: We like to incorporate fun in the office whenever possible! Between our monthly shuffleboard and billiards tournaments, vintage arcade games, Crock Pot cook-offs, go-kart racing, and annual talent contests, there is plenty to do to keep the good times rolling! In addition to games and contests, we also hold monthly birthday celebrations where our team can sing and celebrate with a different treat each month, which have ranged from a build-your-own hot dog bar to healthy smoothies and acai bowls. Other treats have included a create-your-own ice cream sandwich station, deluxe root beer floats, an In-N-Out burger bar, nacho bars, and a variety of delicious gourmet desserts.
  • Individual Betterment Program: Hughes Marino Core Value #6 is “nurture your personal and professional life,” and we take it very seriously. We believe that a fulfilling personal and professional life is achieved by pursuing growth and learning (HM Core Value #7) and, as such, we invest significant resources in the individual growth of our team members. We have a monthly goal-setting program (affectionately named the “HM Mini Goals”), a company book club, lunch and learns, team hiking outings, and quarterly team meetings where we discuss inspirational topics. We also bring in professional speakers and presentation coaches to help our team members reach the top of their game professionally, overcome obstacles, and promote psychological wellbeing to create lasting success both in the workplace and in life.

What key characteristics tell you a prospective employee will be a great fit for your company?

When combing through the hundreds (or thousands) of applications we receive for each new position, we look for very specific attributes. We are always on the lookout for positive, kind and friendly candidates who live and breathe our values. For brokerage positions, we seek candidates with character, grit and initiative, who demonstrate the commitment and determination required to join us in disrupting our competitive industry. For operations staff we look for reliable, honest team players with a passion for helping those around them succeed.

What can prospective employees do to get your attention?

At Hughes Marino we love what we do and the people we work with. We have an incredible team of enthusiastic individuals, and want to see this same enthusiasm from our prospective candidates!
