What You Should Know
In seven short years, Grindr has become the go-to app for gay men to connect around the world. Connection also lies at the heart Grindr's workplace, where employees value the impact of their jobs within an organization that rewards them well.
"It feels good to be a part of a company where I don't have to worry about people finding out if I'm gay and treating me unfairly," one team members says. "On top of that, everybody here is very friendly and seems to share the same goals in making the best product and experience possible for our users."
Surveys from Grindr's employees reveal that sentiment is widespread: 92 percent of colleagues feel their work makes a difference. With only 40-plus people on staff, nine in ten also say they're entrusted with a lot of responsibility. Communication can sometimes be challenging as the organization grows. But one employee ultimately summarizes the workplace as "the best of both worlds in tech," having "a startup vibe but also profitable enough where we are secure and well-compensated with nice benefits, such as daily catered breakfasts."
Grindr sweetens the pot further with Friday happy hours, fully paid employee medical coverage, unlimited sick days and even two "hangover holidays." Pride Week celebrations and the Grindr for Equality initiative also underline the company's place in LGBT culture – a facet of the business that employees say makes it unique among its digital peers.
Fringe benefits may be common among successful startups, but the vast majority of Grindr employees (92 percent) also confirm the company shows up by paying them fairly for the work they do. At the same time, many employees praise their work-life balance and opportunities to telecommute. Says one, "I have seen many companies 'preach' about work and balancing personal life. I see it in practice here."
One remote team member notes a strong sense of inclusion in the organization, even though colleagues are spread across multiple time zones. Whether working in the company's open-floor-plan Los Angeles headquarters or elsewhere, 94 percent of employees say Grindr makes newcomers feel welcome. Throw in the widely held satisfaction in the reach of their work, and one colleague describes employment at Grindr this way: "Everyone enjoys working here, and there is little to no drama in the office. We all work in an open environment, and collaboration is key to our success."
