Perks and Programs

We asked GISinc to share a few programs they feel really capture what's unique about their workplace. Here is what they had to say.

  • Personal Choice Benefits: We believe that this unique approach to benefits empowers our employee owners to customize a benefits package that best benefits their lifestyle needs, bringing each of us exceptional value and helping us stay balanced and happy. Through this plan, we offer a set of Base Benefits to all full-time employees and, in addition to those, we give everyone points to select or “purchase” Personal Choice Benefits that are most important to them. Personal Choice selections are made annually – allowing us to review and provide the very best options and introduce new alternatives each year in response to the needs our employee owners identify as important to them, and allowing each of us to tailor our package as life changes.
  • Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP: We created our ESOP because we wanted everyone to share in the success of the company and it was a perfect match to an already ownership minded culture.   The ESOP is a great motivator and inspires our people to continue to drive our culture and keep it strong.  In addition to reinforcing our core values, it is also an important part of our total value proposition – with an emphasis on equity, long term wealth and security - especially when you consider our generous 401K matching in addition to our ESOP.  ESOPs generally have employees with retirement assets 3 times higher than non-ESOPs; tend to stay in business significantly longer than competitors; and have much stronger financial performance when compared to others in their industries.
  • Employee Development Process (EDP: We used to have a traditional performance review system where employees were given a rating on a number of topics, just like when you were graded when in high school. But employees and managers alike didn’t like it and it wasn’t useful. So we threw it out and implemented the EDP to help each employee owner discover what they want to do and make a plan on how to get there. The goal of the employee development process is to help every employee develop while improving their overall contribution to the company. The employee owns and drives this process supported by coaches, mentors and resources from the company.
  • GISinc Hackathon: The spirit of our Hackathon events is to have an idea, take a time-out from your daily responsibilities, and put effort into bringing your idea to life over a 24-hour period.  Everyone in the company can participate, individually or by forming a team, and events are held both virtually and in-person.  At the end of each event, every group has 4 minutes to present their idea to the entire company, who then votes on their favorites.  Ideas may also be selected by business leaders for further investment.   Innovation in all forms are welcome and celebrated during the event: innovation around technology, or innovation with how we operate as a business.  Remember, everyone is a hacker!
  • Unplugged: Once a year, we hold a multi-day company-wide meeting at a hotel and conference center near a concentration of our people where we “Unplug” from the everyday.  Unplugged is a big investment for us, but one that backs up our commitment to the success of our people in our highly distributed workplace by bringing everyone together for face-to-face interaction, feeding our culture so that every cell feels that they are truly part of the larger organism.  A combined business meeting, social gathering and training event, Unplugged is one of our most beloved traditions and part of what makes our company truly special.
  • Lean Innovation: Every person in the company can participate in innovation projects/activities once they hit their Lean Ratio. This approach keeps people engaged in their day jobs while looking for opportunities to do innovation work.

        How to Get Hired

We asked GISinc for some inside information on how to get hired at the organization. Here is what they had to say.

What key characteristics tell you a prospective employee will be a great fit for your company?

There are two major things we consider when hiring: Best Fit with our culture: Do we have common values?  Does your passion align with ours? Best Fit for a role technically: Based on capability, logistics, and what you want to do. When the above considerations line up, then we have the foundation for success!  We look for these characteristics in candidates: Collaborative people with excellent communication skills Self-initiative and the ability to excel individually and on teams Intellectually relentless, capable, people who want to use their head People ready to challenge each other respectfully People who are passionate about location technology and solving problems People who want to learn and grow People who believe in providing great customer service And of course it never hurts that you are a hard-core geo geek!

What can prospective employees do to get your attention?

Tell us in your cover letter or show us through your work why you’ll love coming to work every day with GISi and how you’ll contribute to making our company great. (Also note that our standard reply to resume submissions includes this fine print: Candidates with any combination of the letters G-I-S in their names may be automatically forwarded to hiring managers. Final hiring decisions will be influenced by geospatial models correlating productivity with coffee shop proximity.)

Are there any positions or types of candidates you are particularly focused on hiring in this coming year?

For any position that we post, we are looking for passionate, inspired individuals who do what they love and love what they do. These individuals will be great communicators, excel at collaboration and have a fundamental respect for their fellow humans.

What should interested candidates do to find out more and get started?

Take some time and check out our website, brag book and blog to find out more about us, our clients, our projects, and what we are up to.  If you think this could be a great place for you to be, then apply to become a part of our team.
