We asked First Orion to share a few programs they feel really capture what's unique about their workplace. Here is what they had to say.

  • Corporate Rewards: We want everyone to have ownership in the company, so EVERY full-time new hire receives stock options. Additionally, all First Orion employees can earn up to 10% bonus on base pay based on company meeting profit objectives.
  • Online Learning: NEW: Last year our team members told us they wanted more training opportunities. We pulled together an employee focus group to review options and they chose Safari (an O'Reilly company) on-demand, online training. Every employee, including our interns, have access to over 40,000 books and videos from 200+ respected technology and business partners plus curated learning paths, video courses, Oriole Interactive Programming Tutorials, and live webinars via their desktop and mobile devices.
  • Beer:30: Every Thursday at 3:30PM the Little Rock Office (headquarters) team members gather in the rec room to play ping pong, Baggo or card games, try out local craft beers, eat great food, chat with potential new recruits, and just enjoy each other's company. We also use this time to celebrate special occasions such as one employee's new U.S. citizenship this year! Every now and then we throw a game (with prizes) into the mix like People Bingo or Trivia.
  • Museum of Discovery: With the Museum of Discovery right next door, our team members get to participate in some cool events with either free or discounted tickets such as Science After Dark. We recently bought tickets for all interested team members for the Ecliptic Event at the Museum to eat pizza, learn more about the Eclipse, get a cool pair of safety glasses and then pour into the streets to watch the Eclipse together!
  • Company Swag: NEW: We want everyone here to feel special, not just our new teammates, so when we upgraded our cool new hire swag box with items like a trucker hat, First Orion journal, multi-purpose mousepad, magnetic can koozies and stickers we made sure to order enough for everyone already here!
  • Monday Company Meeting: Every Monday Morning the whole company gathers together in our lounge area and via videoconference to welcome new team members and hear updates and happenings from our CEO. A full breakfast is catered every first Monday Morning Meeting of the month to honor those with a birthday or service anniversary that month.
  • Just for Fun: Throughout the year we host small fun events like PI Day (with what else but delicious pies!), Summer Kick-off with fresh watermelon, BOOrion at Museum of Discovery, Ugly Holiday sweater contest, family night at the Travelers baseball game and a holiday party at our CEO's house. On employee birthdays, our HQ office manager decorates the team member's work space. Some team members also join together for local bike and foot races, robotics events, and trivia competitions.
  • Planning for the Future: NEW: There is no longer a waiting period for new hires to enroll in our 401k retirement plan. We know it's never too soon to start saving for financial wellness and we believe by allowing enrollment on day 1 that more new hires will participate.
  • STEM Education Outreach: In addition to our philanthropic giving, First Orion supports STEM education initiatives through university giving and volunteerism with programs such as hack-a-thons, Girls of Code, Raspberry PI Bake-off, Maker Fair and TinkerFest. 
  • Matching Gifts Program: NEW: We recognize the importance of giving back to our communities, so we implemented a matching gifts program for qualified 501 c(3) organizations as part of our philanthropic support. First Orion matches dollar-for-dollar eligible employee contributions up to $100 per calendar year.

What key characteristics tell you a prospective employee will be a great fit for your company?

We look for team players who have a proven track record of being change agents in their schools, workplaces or communities. We want people who show initiative; fail fast and move on; treat others with respect; bring out the best in those around them; are genuine and authentic; think big and bold; and are constantly learning. As a fast growth company, we want people with a desire and motivation to take on new challenges and responsibilities and have fun along the way. New team members should be ready to roll up their sleeves and jump right in!
