Perks and Programs

We asked First Orion to share a few programs they feel really capture what's unique about their workplace. Here is what they had to say.

  • Company Rewards: We want everyone to have ownership in the company, so EVERY full-time new hire receives stock options. Additionally, all First Orion employees can earn up to 10% bonus on base pay based on company meeting profit objectives.
  • Online Learning: Every employee, including our interns, have access to our Safari/O'Reilly online training system with over 40,000 books and videos from 200+ respected technology and business partners plus curated learning paths, video courses, Oriole Interactive Programming Tutorials, and live webinars via their desktop and mobile devices. We want everyone to get their learn on!
  • Beer:30: Every Thursday at 3:30PM the Little Rock office (HQ) team members gather to play ping pong or card games, try out local craft beers, eat great food, chat with potential new recruits, and just enjoy each other's company. We also use this time to celebrate special occasions and holidays. Every now and then we throw a game (with prizes) into the mix like People Bingo or Trivia. As we continue to grow, we know it's important to carve time out together just to chill and connect.
  • Kids2Work Day: We were psyched to celebrate National Take Your Daughters and Sons to Work Day with our own First Orion Kids2Work Day. Our superhero themed event was a huge success with 18 youngsters ages 8 - 12 joining their parents in our offices to learn about our cool technology, the different jobs we have and how we help catch the bad guy scammers/spammers in the telco industry. We included family tickets to a cool science show with the Museum of Discovery plus a martial arts lesson along with some awesome superhero swag. We can't wait to do it again next year!
  • Just for Fun: Throughout the year we host small fun events like PI Day (with what else but delicious pies!), Halloween lunch and costume contest, TEAMSGiving potluck, and Ugly Holiday sweater contest. This past year we hosted a big holiday celebration complete with lighted dance floor, DJ and fun photo booth. Some team members also join together for local bike and foot races, robotics events, bowling tournaments and trivia competitions.
  • Celebrations & Communications: We support our employees in life’s celebrations and challenges. We have a celebration program where we “woo hoo” the happy moments such as births and weddings through presents or gift cards & a compassion program for the tougher times with care packages. Our CEO personally sends birthday cards to each team member to their home address & we publicly recognize service anniversaries & key accomplishments in our weekly all hands company meeting. During the meeting our CEO provides updates on what's happening around the business. This time & communication is important as we value Trust & Transparency as one of our core values. We also send out meeting highlights each week in case anyone can't make it. We host a celebratory breakfast once a month as an additional thank you. Other touchpoints include new employee interviews at 30-45 days in, skip level discussions & a true open-door policy. Wanna talk with the CEO? Walk right in!
  • Big Growth = New Space: Our business is growing which means we're quickly outgrowing our current HQ workspace! We're breaking ground on a new building all our own as the anchor building in a cool new community space called the Argenta Plaza. We wanted everyone involved in the excitement of the big press conference, so we rented a trolley to transport our team members over to the new site. We've been soliciting ideas from our team members about things they'd like to have in our new company home and will continue to involve them as the build progresses. Great times ahead!
  • Culture Cornerstones: Every company has a culture, whether they write it down or not. It's important to our growing company that everyone is working from the same playbook, so with lots of input from our employees, we created and rolled out our Culture Cornerstones to help guide how we work and interact with each other, our clients, vendors and visitors. It's also critical that we hire as much for culture as we do for skill. Our Cornerstones are People First, Trust & Transparency, Make It Happen and Innovation Wins. There's a lot of detail behind each one that describes our "culture in action" to help team members connect behaviors with the culture. We also developed and shared a set of Leadership Expectations to which we hold our leaders accountable.
  • STEM Education Outreach: In addition to our philanthropic giving, First Orion supports STEM education initiatives through university giving and volunteerism with programs such as hack-a-thons, Girls of Code, Raspberry PI Bake-off, and Maker Fair. This year we also hosted two Girls in STEM summer programs in partnership with the Museum of Discovery, including 60 young ladies with an interest in science, technology, engineering and math. Several of our female team members talked with them about careers in STEM, what jobs pay and what we do in the hopes of inspiring them to continue their STEM journey. We included a couple of fun exercises with mobile text-polling plus a cool data science project using top movie rankings. We also know it's important to support a thriving tech community so we sponsor local tech events such as TechFest and Made by Few.
  • Unlimited PTO: We value a culture of accountability and mutual trust and want those values reflected in our time off policies. We encourage team members to take time away from the office to creatively recharge or take care of personal business. To that end, we have an open Paid Time Off program where employees determine when and how much time they want to take off and take personal responsibility for managing their own time, workload and results. Our people tell us they LOVE the flexibility this provides!

How to Get Hired

We asked First Orion for some inside information on how to get hired at the organization. Here is what they had to say.

What key characteristics tell you a prospective employee will be a great fit for your company?

In addition to meeting the specific skill requirements, we look for team players who have a proven track record of being change agents in their schools, workplaces or communities. We want people who show initiative; fail fast and move on; treat others with respect; bring out the best in those around them; are genuine and authentic; think big and bold; and are constantly learning. As a fast growth company, we want people with a desire and motivation to take on new challenges and responsibilities. New team members should be ready to roll up their sleeves and jump right in! We also want people who like to have some fun along the way. We spend so much of our waking hours together, we want to be able to laugh together while we work.

What can prospective employees do to get your attention?

Show us how you are a results-driven, outstanding contributor and a great team player.  We are committed to having a workplace that is filled with creative thinkers and innovators who have an "all in" mindset. Prospective team members get our attention by not only producing great work, but also creating value inside and outside their organization or workplace.

Are there any positions or types of candidates you are particularly focused on hiring in this coming year?

As we grow, we continue to be keenly focused on growing our mobile software development and data science teams. These are hot skills in the marketplace and we'll continue our college and professional recruiting efforts to attract stars who are excited about joining a company where they can have a direct impact on the company and our industry while growing their own skills and careers. We recently created our own Technical Apprenticeship Progam where we're hiring entry level developers and through in-house training, getting them iOS or Android ready in 12 weeks for our fast-paced business!
