We asked Eureka Casino Resort to share a few programs they feel really capture what's unique about their workplace. Here is what they had to say.

  • Employee-Owner of the Year Retreat: Every Employee-Owner of the Month for the past year is invited to participate in the Employee-Owner of the Year Retreat, a 3-day educational and recreational break from everyday work to work on ourselves, the business, and form/enhance friendships with coworkers and the management team. The Employee-Owner of the Year is selected by the Employee-Owners of the Month through a secret ballot at the end of the trip. During the retreat, team-building exercises are completed as are fun recreational activities such as archery, horseback riding, ATVs, yoga, spa treatments, and food & wine pairing classes.
  • Shriek-reeka: This Community Event organized by Eureka Employee-Owners brings over 90% of Mesquite children to the property to celebrate Halloween and raise money for local charities. Over the past 5 years, more than $100,000 has been raised for local charities as a result of this initiative.
  • Mesquite Reads: In the City of Mesquite, Eureka has created a program to ensure that all elementary school children are reading at or above grade level by the time they finish the 3rd grade. Through a mentorship program and summer school sessions that are paid for at least 50% by the Eureka Community Initiative (Eureka's giving arm), the City of Mesquite is expected to have 100% of students reading at or above grade level by the end of the 2018 school year. Eureka employees assist in mentoring, preparing and distributing lunches on Thursdays for the kids in summer school, and working with the teachers and principals to help out as needed.
  • 4th of July Celebration: In the middle of the Great Recession, the City of Mesquite was in a budget crisis and couldn't afford to do the traditional fireworks for the 4th of July that they had been doing for decades. The Eureka Casino Resort donated the fireworks to the City and used their relationship with the Nevada Pops to offer a live concert in addition to the fireworks. Now in its 8th year, the 4th of July celebration attracts more than 20,000 people from the community to watch fireworks, listen to the Nevada Pops, and celebrate being American.
  • 5/10/15/20 Year Employee-Owner Recognition: Eureka employee-owners are fully vested in the ESOP in Year 6 but we celebrate tenure in 5-year increments. Every year, a new class of inductees is brought in front of the employee population to celebrate their longevity and commitment as a member of the Eureka family. Fantastic wardrobe is worn, delicious meals are served, pranks are played on coworkers, and a great time with singing and dancing is had by all. An elaborate gift program is given to the employee-owners celebrating 5, 10, 15, and 20 years and the 20-year employees are given a 5-week sabbatical where employees are assigned a travel agent and a budget to plan their adventure all paid for by the company.
  • Holiday Bonus/Gift Program: Every year at the holidays, Eureka gives every employee-owner either a gift or a bonus depending on the company's profitability. A gift is given if budget has not been met; a bonus is given if it has. For the last 4 years in a row, the Eureka has paid bonuses, making for a happier holiday season. These gifts/bonuses range between 5-20% of base pay.
  • Employee-Owner Picnic/Carnival: At the beginning of fall each year, Employee-Owners are invited to bring their families to the property to celebrate the start of "busy season" with games, food, live entertainment, raffles, and camaraderie.
  • Employee-Owner Discount & Comp Program: Employee-Owners can get discounts of 20% off retail pricing for the hotel, spa, gift shop, restaurants, and bars. When an employee has an emergency at home, they can stay up to 3 nights in the hotel without charge or bring food to their home.
  • Employee Assistance Fund: In emergencies, employee owners can apply to receive up to $300 in a no-interest loan to help get them through difficult periods. The employee assistance committee made up exclusively of fellow employee-owners reviews all applications and responds within 24 hours. The program has made a meaningful impact for many employee-owners.

What key characteristics tell you a prospective employee will be a great fit for your company?

Positive/friendly attitude; they have a big motor (aka high energy); searching for the "H"  chromosome (the hospitality gene); an exceptionally high EQ; a high work ethic; the dominant trait of empathy; strong sense of personal accountability; a high desire to be a part of something collectively than they could ever be part of individually; humble and dependable; ability to clearly communicate their ideas but more importantly a willingness to understand the ideas of others; a resourceful problem solver; a work ethic of a grinder; someone who's shown grit in the face of adversity; an owner's mindset; alignment with our core values. 

What can prospective employees do to get your attention?

Are there any positions or types of candidates you are particularly focused on hiring in this coming year?

We are currently recruiting for interns across the Company to provide them with an opportunity to learn skills which supplement their education and provide them with an opportunity to grow within the Company, with the ultimate goal of offering the interns a job after they graduate from college.  We are also recruiting for a Senior Room Chef. Our restaurants are consistently rated highly within Mesquite, with Gregory's Mesquite Grill, our fine dining steak house, being rated the number 1 restaurant in the city for the past 8 years. As a result, we are looking for an individual with experience and the skill set to allow him/her to maintain the high ranking of our restaurants and continue to elevate the experience for our team and for our guests. 

What should interested candidates do to find out more and get started?

Google the company; Google the senior team; Read articles about what the company has done, and more importantly, learn why the company has done everything it has done from a business standpoint, and through the prism of supporting our community; learn what an ESOP is and why the company became one; and, finally, the candidate should understand that the employment process should be as much about them choosing the company as it is about the company choosing them.
