What They Do

We asked Etsy to explain what they do. Here is what they had to say.

We operate a marketplace where people around the world connect, both online and offline, to make, sell and buy unique goods.

Perks and Programs

We asked Etsy to share a few programs they feel really capture what's unique about their workplace. Here is what they had to say.

  • Etsy covers 100% of employee (and their families!) healthcare contributions: Etsy covers 100% of premiums for employees and their dependents standard medical and dental plans, including eligible dependents.
  • Etsy provides 26 weeks of fully-paid parental leave to all employees: Employees, regardless of gender, can take the time over 2 years after birth or adoption, and we also provide a stipend for assistance with the costs of adoption or surrogacy. Our offices have well-appointed Parents Rooms for nursing moms and resources for all parents.
  • Etsy makes time for employees to give back: Etsy provides US employees with an additional 40 hours of paid time off to volunteer with an organization they’re passionate about.
  • Etsy keeps it weird (and fun): Etsy hosts an annual Hack Week where employees take time away from regular work to work on any special project they choose. Weird things are known to happen including spontaneous dance parties, pranks, and surprise guests. Employees also teach classes for their colleagues through Etsy School on topics ranging from silkscreening to Python programming. We celebrate our admin and their “Etsyversaries” and host birthday celebrations. Etsy has an annual Talent Show that showcases anyone who signs up and wants to share a talent, art form, or craft with their peers. Etsy also hosts an all-inclusive Halloween party, where even dogs and children don their best costumes.
  • Etsy supports well-rested and focused employees: Etsy’s headquarters sports a “Breathing Room,” a quiet space with natural wood floors and a killer view where employees are encouraged to seek out peace and quiet or grab a blanket and giant bean bag for a refreshing afternoon nap. Employees can also curl up with a good book on plush furniture or gently swing in an egg chair suspended from the ceiling in the adjacent “Garden Library,” a meeting free zone intended for rest and quiet work. There’s fresh air aplenty on our roof deck and two terraces for anyone who needs to get away, recharge and collect some vitamin D. We also offer yoga classes, meditation, and massage on a regular basis.
  • Etsy embeds social and environmental sustainability in everything we do: Our global headquarters also features rooftop solar panels, which help to power the building and contribute to the company’s goal to be powered by 100% renewable electricity by 2020. Etsy homeowners are given access to significant discounts to home solar through a new program called Etsy Solar, which is also offered to Etsy sellers to help offset the environmental impact of shipping in our marketplace. Zero waste is another sustainability priority --you’ll find the usual recycling receptacles as well as places to collect compost, e-waste, textiles and hard to recycle items like styrofoam and plastic food packaging.
  • Etsy encourages learning & development: Etsy offers company-wide leadership and development opportunities at every level. One of the most popular is our Leadership Dens. Almost 20% of the company is enrolled in our bi-weekly, confidential, expert-facilitated discussions on topics the members choose. Members support each other through work challenges, trade best practices on complicated problems, and build cross-functional connections. The L&D team also consults on team structure, department off-sites, team diagnostics, provides custom-developed programming, and manages Etsy’s performance assessment tool called Sonar. Etsy’s culture encourages learning communities and skills sharing. These staff-initiated learning opportunities include a coding class series for non-engineers, mobile development, and Etsy School (which consists of fun classes like dance or juggling, as well as time-management hacks and job-applicable skills taught by peers).
  • Etsy believes the best work is born from happy, healthy and inspired people: At Etsy, we don’t live work/life, we live life. We strongly believe in nurturing a fulfilling and healthy life for all of our employees. Rather than framing it in the typical way of “work/life balance,” we want employees to live full and fulfilling lives in every aspect and to bring their whole selves to work. Employees are encouraged to take their vacation time, and many managers have been known to encourage an employee they know has been working particularly hard to come in late or take some extra time off. Etsy also offers unlimited sick days regardless of tenure, which encourages employees who are ill to take time to get better or work remotely, as needed.

How to Get Hired

We asked Etsy for some inside information on how to get hired at the organization. Here is what they had to say.

What key characteristics tell you a prospective employee will be a great fit for your company?

The core competencies we look for include: adaptability, authenticity, collaboration, communication, craftsmanship, leadership, passion, resilience, resourcefulness, self-awareness, self-managing, humility, kindness and empathy, bias to action, and purpose driven.

What can prospective employees do to get your attention?

The most effective way for a candidate to stand out is to have a well-written cover letter, completed homework, portfolio or other documentation of work. We want to hear about you, and your interests, in your own words.

Are there any positions or types of candidates you are particularly focused on hiring in this coming year?

We’re hiring across the entire company this year. We’re also making a conscious and proactive effort to recruit diverse talent. In 2015, we made big strides in hiring women not only into Engineering but also management and leadership positions throughout the company. Today, our leadership and management are 50% women. Going forward, we plan to continue our upward momentum with gender diversity, while also beginning to focus more heavily on ethnic and racial diversity.

What should interested candidates do to find out more and get started?

Interested candidates should visit our Career page, our About page, read our Progress Report, research us online and read our blogs. We’re looking for folks who understand and are passionate about our mission and values. We encourage all applicants to reach out to us and share what we’re doing that they connect to. Offering us a look into their portfolio of work also goes a long way.
