Perks and Programs

We asked ESL Federal Credit Union to share a few programs they feel really capture what's unique about their workplace. Here is what they had to say.

  • Terrific Values-Based Culture: At ESL, our five core values – integrity, initiative, accountability, teamwork, and caring about people – are the heart of everything we do. These values are the foundation of our unique culture (which employees often describe as “warm,” “welcoming,” “friendly,” and “fun”), along with our commitment to delivering a superior experience to all customers -- both internal and external.
  • Superior Employee Experience: How do we deliver a superior customer experience? It begins by first creating a superior employee experience! At ESL, we do that by hiring great people who align with our values and culture, providing them with competitive total rewards, equipping them with the necessary tools to succeed, recognizing them appropriately, and proactively keeping them informed and engaged. In doing so, we’ve created an incredible workplace that is uniquely ESL.
  • Exceptional Benefits: ESL works hard to proactively manage the ever-rising cost of employee health care – resulting in a 0% increase in employee medical premium increases in the past three years for employees choosing our High Deductible Health Plan (HDHP). In addition, our employees enjoy other terrific benefits/total rewards including dental and vision coverage, health savings account, flexible spending account, life insurance, 401(k) with company match, and a no-cost pension plan, among others.
  • Excellent Employee Incentive Plan: At ESL, all employees – regardless of position – are eligible to participate in the company’s Employee Incentive Plan (EIP), a robust performance-based incentive program. Annual awards are earned based on both company and individual performance.
  • Nationally Recognized Learning & Development: For 10 consecutive years now, ESL has been recognized nationally for our excellence and effectiveness in employee learning and development. Whether through in-depth classroom training, modern technology, or other innovative methods, we are committed to ensuring that our employees are always learning and growing.
  • Award-Winning Wellness Program: ESL’s Wellness Program, called “Be Well at ESL,” has been lauded both locally and nationally for its innovation and commitment to encouraging healthy behaviors in the workplace. Whether through numerous classes and activities, wellness discounts and events, annual biometric screenings, an onsite fitness center (free to all employees), and more, helping to keep employees healthy and well is an important part of the ESL experience.
  • Robust Recognition Program: Recognition is an important part of the ESL culture. Our robust recognition program offers several unique, ongoing, and fun ways for employees to be recognized at the corporate level, by managers, and by peers. That’s why nearly 90% of our employees feel recognized for the work they do.
  • Opportunities to Give Back: When it comes to giving back to the Rochester community, ESL employees often lead the way. Through our unique “VolunCare” program, employees have donated hundreds of hours of service to local organizations such as FoodLink, Habit for Humanity, and the Salvation Army. Through our “Kindness Crew,” they’ve performed random acts of kindness at events in and around the Rochester area. And through our employee-run United Way campaign, they’ve raised thousands of dollars to help combat some of our region’s biggest challenges. These are just some of the many ways we show that we care about people and the community we serve.
  • Engaging Events & Activities: Year-round, ESL plans a wide variety of terrific events and special activities specifically designed for employees to keep them well informed and engaged. Some events are business-related; others are purely social (and open to family members). All are memorable and fun!
  • Free Downtown Parking: When ESL built its new headquarters in Downtown Rochester in 2010, it also built its own parking garage to offer all employees free, secure, covered parking – available to all employees 24/7, 365 days a year. Even employees who work at one of its 20 branch locations (where they also have free parking) have access to the ESL Parking Garage, which they can use when attending concerts, plays, festivals, and other events in the City of Rochester during their off hours.

How to Get Hired

We asked ESL Federal Credit Union for some inside information on how to get hired at the organization. Here is what they had to say.

What key characteristics tell you a prospective employee will be a great fit for your company?

First and foremost, ESL seeks employees who truly fit our unique culture. This is paramount to success in our organization, regardless of the position. Specifically, these are individuals who:  Live our five core values (integrity, initiative, accountability, teamwork, and caring about people) on a daily basis; are committed to our Common Purpose of delivering a superior experience to all customers (both internal and external) in addition to our service expectations; are personable, professional, energetic, show initiative and accountability; have a positive attitude; and smile!

What can prospective employees do to get your attention?

Beyond having a genuine passion for serving others incredibly well, do your homework! By this, we mean learn as much as possible about ESL, what we do, who we serve, and how you can make a difference. Then learn a bit about the position for which you are applying and be able to explain why you are the best candidate. (If you’re a current member, all the better!)

In addition, be sure to articulate your qualifications on your resume. And spend time answering our assessment questions.

Finally, be proactive and persistent. We’re looking for go-getters! Seek us out at a job fair or talk to current employees in our branches. If they have a positive impression of you, they may even refer you to ESL using our terrific Employee Referral Program.

Are there any positions or types of candidates you are particularly focused on hiring in this coming year?

ESL is always looking for candidates who are customer-focused, positive, energetic, motivated, professional, friendly, and fun. The bulk of our hiring is typically for positions in our branches and Contact Center. But we also seek IT professionals, future leaders, and employees for our new lines of business. As these lines of business continue to grow, we’re often on the lookout for additional subject matter experts in business banking, credit analysis, investments, and other banking specialties.

We are committed to growing from within, so individuals who have proven to be successful at ESL often have opportunities for advancement. In fact, we recently hosted an internal career fair (called “Career Connections”) aimed at giving current employees the opportunity to meet ESL leaders and learn more about various career paths within the company. Now that’s caring about people!

What should interested candidates do to find out more and get started?

Talk to our employees! Visit a branch and ask our employees firsthand what it’s like to work at ESL. Or come to a job fair. We attend nearly 20 job fairs a year at Rochester-area colleges and community events. During these events, one of our recruiters will be available to answer any questions you may have.  It helps us put a face to your name and gives you an opportunity to showcase your skills and personality.

And be sure to check out the Careers section on our terrific website, This site is loaded with great information and terrific videos that show why ESL truly is a great place to work – giving prospective employees an excellent overview of the culture and benefits of working at ESL. From there, you can easily view our current job openings and apply online.

We look forward to hearing from you!
