Perks and Programs

We asked ESL Federal Credit Union to share a few programs they feel really capture what's unique about their workplace. Here is what they had to say.

  • Terrific Values-Based Culture: At ESL, our five core values – integrity, initiative, accountability, teamwork, and caring about people – are the heart of everything we do. These values are the foundation of our unique culture (which employees often describe as “warm,” “welcoming,” “friendly,” and “fun”), along with our commitment to delivering a superior experience to all customers – both internal and external.
  • Superior Employee Experience: How do we deliver a superior customer experience? It begins by first creating a superior employee experience! At ESL, we do that by hiring great people who align with our values and culture, providing them with competitive total rewards, equipping them with the necessary tools to succeed, recognizing them appropriately, and proactively keeping them informed and engaged. In doing so, we’ve created an incredible workplace that consistently has been recognized as one of the best in the country!
  • Exceptional Benefits: ESL works hard to proactively manage the ever-rising cost of employee health care – resulting in a 0% increase in employee medical premium increases for the past five years for employees choosing our High Deductible Health Plan (HDHP). In addition, our employees enjoy other terrific benefits/total rewards including paid time off, dental and vision coverage, health savings account, flexible spending account, life insurance, 401(k) with company match, and a no-cost pension plan, among others.
  • Excellent Employee Incentive Plan: At ESL, all employees – regardless of position – are eligible to participate in the company’s Employee Incentive Plan (EIP), a robust performance-based incentive program. Annual awards are earned based on both company and individual performance.
  • Nationally Recognized Learning & Development: For 12 consecutive years, ESL has been recognized nationally for our excellence and effectiveness in employee learning and development – including our highest ranking ever (#18) in 2018! Whether through in-depth classroom training, modern technology, or other innovative methods, we are committed to ensuring that our employees are always learning and growing.
  • Award-Winning Wellness Program: ESL’s Wellness Program, called “Be Well at ESL,” has been lauded both locally and nationally for its innovation and commitment to encouraging healthy behaviors in the workplace. Whether through numerous classes and activities, wellness discounts and events, a lifestyle rewards program, an onsite fitness center (free to all employees), annual biometric screenings, and more, helping to keep employees healthy and well is an important part of the ESL experience.
  • A Terrific Recognition Program: Recognition is a huge part of the ESL culture. Our robust recognition program offers several unique, ongoing, and fun ways for employees to be recognized at the corporate level, by managers, and by peers. With ESL Honors, VIP Breakfasts, on-the-spot awards, team celebrations, and more, it's no wonder nearly 90% of our employees feel recognized for the work they do!
  • Opportunities to Help the Community: When it comes to giving back to the Rochester community, ESL employees help lead the way. Through our unique “VolunCare” program, employees receive eight hours of paid volunteer time each year to help non-profit organizations in the community. Through our “Kindness Crew,” they perform random acts of kindness at events in and around the Rochester area. And through our employee-run United Way campaign, they raise thousands of dollars to help combat some of our region’s biggest challenges. These are just some of the many ways we show that we care about people and the community we serve.
  • Fun Events & Activities: Year-round, ESL plans a wide variety of terrific events and special activities specifically designed to keep employees well informed and engaged. Some events (like our ESL Forums) combine business with pleasure; others (like our summer picnic at Seabreeze amusement park) are purely social (and open to family members). All are memorable and fun – and are an important part of the ESL culture!
  • An Active Young Professionals Program: At ESL, our young professionals are doing great things – and not just in their jobs! With the recent launch of our Young Professionals Program and team, they're planning networking events, volunteer activities, and social outings that are open to all ESL employees but have a keen focus on the needs and wants of their generation. With all this going on, it's easy to see why ESL also has been recognized as a great workplace for millennials!

How to Get Hired

We asked ESL Federal Credit Union for some inside information on how to get hired at the organization. Here is what they had to say.

What key characteristics tell you a prospective employee will be a great fit for your company?

First and foremost, ESL seeks employees who truly fit our unique culture. This is paramount to success in our organization, regardless of the position. Specifically, these are individuals who: live our five core values (integrity, initiative, accountability, teamwork, and caring about people) on a daily basis; are committed to delivering a superior experience to all customers (both internal and external) in addition to living our service expectations; are personable, professional, and energetic; show initiative and accountability; have a positive attitude; and smile!

What can prospective employees do to get your attention?

Beyond having a genuine passion for serving others incredibly well, do your homework! By this, we mean learn as much as possible about ESL, what we do, who we serve, and how you can make a difference. Then learn a bit about the position for which you are applying and be able to explain why you are the best candidate. (If you’re a current member, all the better!) In addition, be sure to articulate your qualifications on your resume. And spend time answering our assessment questions. Finally, be proactive and persistent. We’re looking for go-getters! Seek us out at a job fair or talk to current employees in our branches. If they have a positive impression of you, they may even refer you to ESL using our terrific Employee Referral Program.

Are there any positions or types of candidates you are particularly focused on hiring in this coming year?

ESL is always looking for candidates who are customer-focused, positive, energetic, motivated, professional, friendly, and fun. The bulk of our hiring is typically for positions in our branches and Contact Center. But we also seek IT professionals, future leaders, and employees for our new lines of business -- including Trust Services and Business Development Mortgage Originations. As these lines of business continue to grow, we’re often on the lookout for additional subject matter experts in business banking, credit analysis, investments, and other banking specialties.   We are committed to growing from within, so individuals who have proven to be successful at ESL often have opportunities for advancement.

What should interested candidates do to find out more and get started?

Talk to our employees! Visit a branch and ask our employees firsthand what it’s like to work at ESL. Or come to a job fair. We attend more than 20 job fairs a year at Rochester-area colleges and community events. We also recruit in the community throughout the year in other ways as well. For example, twice a year we hold a Recruitment Open House and Networking Event at our corporate headquarters and invite interested candidates to network with current employees, attend informational sessions, and learn more about available positions. And be sure to check out the Careers section on our terrific website, This site is loaded with great information and videos that show why ESL truly is a great place to work. From there, you can easily view our current job openings and apply online. We look forward to hearing from you!
