We asked ESL Federal Credit Union for some inside information on how to get hired at the organization. Here is what they had to say.
What key characteristics tell you a prospective employee will be a great fit for your company?
First and foremost, ESL seeks employees who truly fit our unique culture. This is paramount to success in our organization, regardless of the position. Specifically, these are individuals who: Live our five core values (integrity, initiative, accountability, teamwork, and caring about people) on a daily basis; are committed to our Common Purpose of delivering a superior experience to all customers (both internal and external) in addition to our service expectations; are personable, professional, energetic, show initiative and accountability; have a positive attitude; and smile!
What can prospective employees do to get your attention?
Beyond having a genuine passion for serving others incredibly well, do your homework! By this, we mean learn as much as possible about ESL, what we do, who we serve, and how you can make a difference. Then learn a bit about the position for which you are applying and be able to explain why you are the best candidate. (If you’re a current member, all the better!)
In addition, be sure to articulate your qualifications on your resume. And spend time answering our assessment questions.
Finally, be proactive and persistent. We’re looking for go-getters! Seek us out at a job fair or talk to current employees in our branches. If they have a positive impression of you, they may even refer you to ESL using our terrific Employee Referral Program.
Are there any positions or types of candidates you are particularly focused on hiring in this coming year?
ESL is always looking for candidates who are customer-focused, positive, energetic, motivated, professional, friendly, and fun. The bulk of our hiring is typically for positions in our branches and Contact Center. But we also seek IT professionals, future leaders, and employees for our new lines of business. As these lines of business continue to grow, we’re often on the lookout for additional subject matter experts in business banking, credit analysis, investments, and other banking specialties.
We are committed to growing from within, so individuals who have proven to be successful at ESL often have opportunities for advancement. In fact, we recently hosted an internal career fair (called “Career Connections”) aimed at giving current employees the opportunity to meet ESL leaders and learn more about various career paths within the company. Now that’s caring about people!
What should interested candidates do to find out more and get started?
Talk to our employees! Visit a branch and ask our employees firsthand what it’s like to work at ESL. Or come to a job fair. We attend nearly 20 job fairs a year at Rochester-area colleges and community events. During these events, one of our recruiters will be available to answer any questions you may have. It helps us put a face to your name and gives you an opportunity to showcase your skills and personality.
