We asked Encompass Health - Homecare and Hospice to share a few programs they feel really capture what's unique about their workplace. Here is what they had to say.

  • Flexible Schedules: Field employees are able to manage their own daily work schedules, allowing them to coordinate and balance family and personal life commitments. It is most important that our employees achieve a work-life balance to level out the stresses of being a patient care provider.
  • Paid Time Off: Full-time employees accrue 30 paid days off each year (six weeks) to be used for personal needs, and that accrual starts on day 1 of employment - no waiting periods to start accruing time off! Our executive leaders strongly suggest that employees use this PDO to help them feel refreshed and not to get burned out from work. PDO is rarely denied to an employee. Our company also allows an employee to accrue an additional 450 hours for an extended illness or to care for a family member with an extended illness. Part of the extended illness hours bank can be used for giving back and participating in Mission Trips.
  • Service Anniversary Celebrations: Employees who reach 3,5, 10, 15, or 20 years of service to the company attend celebration lunches or banquets held each year to recognize milestone anniversaries. A member of our Home Office HR Department organizes the awards and the ceremonies and travels to each office to conduct these celebrations to ensure employees receive the same terrific celebration and feel recognized by our Home Office HR team. Each cycle of celebrations has its own theme. This year's is space-themed, while last year it was disco-themed. The celebrations include music, food, awards, dancing and fun, during the work day so that we don't take away our employees' evening and weekend hours. This year we are giving some of our first 30+ years!! Employees cherish the lapel pins and badge reels that depict their current tenure. I often receive phone calls from sobbing employees who have misplaced their pins! We gladly send them another!
  • Encompass Scholars Program: Employees are eligible for reimbursement when they choose to pursue certain advanced certifications or degrees through the company's Encompass Scholars Program and Dependent Scholars Program. In 2017 Encompass awarded over $70,000 in scholarships to 40+ employees and their children and grandchildren and will award over $100,000 in 2018. In the 8 years of our Scholars program, 98% of applicants have been approved.
  • Employee Recognition: Encompass gives annual awards at our annual meeting in Las Vegas, and awardees receive free transportation and lodging to attend. Some of these awards are based on hard metrics for performance, while other awards are based upon nominations from peers of employees who have demonstrated commitment to our guiding principle of A Better Way to Care, and to exemplifying our Encompass Health Values. Additionally, Encompass operates a program that allows supervisors to give awards to employees who have demonstrated exceptional work, service, or care on the spot or periodically via a rewards point system which honored employees may redeem for merchandise. In addition to redeeming the points for merchandise, the employees may opt to donate their points to different charities.
  • Company Car Program: Employees are eligible for company cars if they drive 300 miles a week or more, plus have a clean driving record. The company covers the cost for gas, insurance, maintenance and repairs. What a great way to promote the company! 
  • Employee Professional Development: Encompass offers a variety of training programs to help employees develop and progress. Some of those courses are offered in our state-of-the-art education facility in Dallas. We pay for the travel and lodging for employees attending training courses in Dallas. Some courses are offered regionally or are web-based. All are designed at professional development of our employees in terms of knowledge, career progression, and skills training. We have recently hired a Director of Professional Development .The Director of Professional Development (DPD) will be responsible for conducting various EDC training sessions to support leadership responsibilities; coaching and mentoring of specific employees, especially supervisors, within the organization; and design of overall professional development curriculum for certain roles and positions. The Director will help ensure company leaders display professional presentation styles and materials while also communicating effectively.

At Encompass, we are looking for people who are talented and skilled, and who share our values. Our clinicians must have excellent technical skills and knowledge, but more importantly, they need to be kind, considerate, and caring individuals. They are taking care of our precious patients. As a service provider, our business will thrive or diminish based upon our interactions with our patients and our patients' clinical outcomes. So, cultural fit is key to hiring anybody. The person must be service-minded and ready to adopt our "A Better Way to Care" mission.
