Perks and Programs

We asked Eleven Inc. to share a few programs they feel really capture what's unique about their workplace. Here is what they had to say.

  • Employee wellness: We're always looking for ways to encourage good wellness habits among employees. Examples include: CPR training, on-site flu shots, a running club, meditation workshops, on-site chiropractic and acupuncture, and ergonomics workshop (by the author of the bestseller, "Deskmount"). In addition to company-subsidized health insurance, we also pay the annual dues for employees to take advantage of the nationwide network of One Medical centers.
  • Pooch policy: Dogs are welcome at Eleven and treated like members of the family. They receive special tags while being introduced to the whole agency and ultimately will appear on our pet photography wall. Our application process ensures that dogs are current on inoculations and have the demeanor to be in a corporate-like setting. And because our dogs are good dogs, we always keep a jar of doggie treats on hand in our communal kitchen.
  • Mobile phone: We subsidize mobile phone costs for every single employee regardless of tenure or level of seniority. We are a text heavy organization so this seems like the right thing to do.
  • Surprise and delight: Eleven has a 'behind the scenes' culture committee that brings creativity and inspiration to our employees. We've arranged for on-site visits/playtime with puppies and kittens from our local shelter, a live farm petting zoo set up in office, guided group meditations, a day with the SF Giants at ATT&T Park, sailing under the Golden Gate Bridge, executive sponsored golf outings, poetry slams, book signing parties for local authors, cast readings for an upcoming play,  and more. A favorite is on or near November 11th (11/11) each year, when this culture committee works hard to surprise and delight Eleveneers 11 times in one day.
  • Tuition reimbursement: Eleven invests an additional $1,100/year per employee to advance their careers. Given we are in a creative industry we are pretty liberal with our peramaters. Example: we've allowed a designer to take a silk screening class, another to take a pottery course.
  • Employee art exhibit: We showcase different kinds of art that our employees create outside of Eleven, across media. We've displayed employees' photography, stained glass work, textiles and more. It's a great way to inspire and celebrate.
  • Sabbatical: Tenured employees receive up to 6 weeks paid time off to pursue a personal passion: travel, time with family, community service, etc.
  • Employee referral program: We pay employees $1,100 every time they recommend a candidate who gets hired. This perk is unlimited. For connected people there can be quite a reward for being an Eleven ambassador and matchmaker!
  • Employee contests: Mid-year we hold a t-shirt design competition, the winner of which is decided by popular vote. And during the holidays we host an ornament design contest, with fun and silly categories that change each year. (The agency's owners have dressed as elves to present the winners with prizes—dinner for two.)
  • Cross-culture celebrations: Twice a year we host agency wide celebrations in which employees are encouraged to represent an aspect of their heritage through ethnic foods and cultural traditions.

How to Get Hired

We asked Eleven Inc. for some inside information on how to get hired at the organization. Here is what they had to say.

What key characteristics tell you a prospective employee will be a great fit for your company?

We described earlier (7.3) how seriously we take our company’s values and behaviors, and that we’ve incorporated them into our interview process—some through explicit questions, others through observation. Our five company values are originality, curiosity, ambition, passion and ownership. Our five company behaviors are generosity, thoughtfulness, integrity, persuasiveness and respect.

What can prospective employees do to get your attention?

Prospective employees will get our attention by doing great/smart/clever/interesting work.  Having a robust online presence makes it easy to get on our radar.  As does landing on a ‘best of’ list or participation on a panel.  The easiest way of all though is an introduction or referral made by an employee, client, vendor or friend of the Agency.

Are there any positions or types of candidates you are particularly focused on hiring in this coming year?

We are focused on hiring 'T shaped' employees - individuals who have deep knowledge and skills in a particular area of specialization, along with the desire and ability to make connections across disciplines.  Additionally we are focused on hiring people who will help us continue to grow our digital, analytical and experience design practice groups.

What should interested candidates do to find out more and get started?

Networking is a great way to get started - find a connection and reach out.  Alternatively, people are always welcome to stop by without an appointment.  We’re an approachable bunch and we like showing off our space.  It's likely that more than a handshake will be offered, and a great way to get the feel of the place.
