We asked DVL Group, Inc. to share a few programs they feel really capture what's unique about their workplace. Here is what they had to say.

  • Volunteer Time Off: In keeping with DVL’s commitment to give back to communities, and to aid programs that offer support to those in need, Volunteer Time Off (VTO) provides full-time associates who volunteer their personal time with 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations. Associates may request up to eight (8) hours of VTO per calendar year when they present proof of volunteering their personal time with a 501(c)(3) nonprofit. For every hour volunteered, DVL will match that hour with a VTO hour at the associate’s regular rate of pay up to 8 hours per calendar year. Proof can be a letter of gratitude from the nonprofit or an email indicating the volunteer work. VTO can be used in one hour increments up to a maximum of eight hours per calendar year. VTO is refreshed at the beginning of each calendar year.
  • Casual Fridays: Our normal work attire is Business casual as we host many customers and vendors on site but on Fridays, when we typically do not have visitors, we dress down in jeans and company provided t shirts. It makes coming in on Fridays fun!
  • Summer Flextime: The purpose of Flexible Summer Hours is to assist associates during the summer months to provide additional time with their families, reduce commuting costs and improve the overall work life balance that is part of our Wellness Philosophy. Most associates have the opportunity for early dismissal at 3:00 pm on Fridays between Memorial Day and Labor Day, without any reduction in pay. Around here? we like to "go down the shore" on the weekends and this allows us the chance to get a jump start on the Friday PA to NJ traffic.
  • Alternative Work Arrangements: Office associates work Monday - Friday 8 am - 5 pm. But what if you can't? No worries! Our company offers Alternative Work Arrangements (AWA) which allow us to work different hours or even from home one day a week if we need that due to personal reasons on a temporary basis. This has been a life saver (or job saver) for those who for personal reasons can't work until 5 pm due to other interests outside of work. Most administrative departments have at least one associate who works from home 1 day during the week to handle personal matters as well.
  • Telecommuting: DVL considers telecommuting to be a viable alternative work arrangement in cases where individual, job and manager characteristics are best suited to such an arrangement. Telecommuting allows associates to work at home, on the road or in a satellite location for all or part of their regular work week. What's cool here? Is MOST associates are able to take advantage of telecommuting. We have a large Sales, Project Management, and Service population that typically only come to the office for monthly meetings and enjoy starting and finishing the work day in their home offices. We are so proud to be non traditional in this sense!
  • Virtual Days: A perk of working here is all associates receive a laptop that comes with a Skype phone that allows you to work anywhere in the office, not just your desk. We have a patio if we need fresh air or plenty of work spaces for a change in scenery. This also makes inclement weather winter days a breeze! We don't stress out about driving to work in snow storms here at DVL! HR will send out a "Possible Virtual Day" notice the day before a snowstorm alerting us to bring home our laptops and paperwork. Then by 6 am we will know if we are working safely from our homes or if the storm missed us. This also helps when the snow hits in the middle of day. HR sends out an email saying go home and finish your day there! It's clear that our safety comes first!
  • Free Fresh Fruit: Our Wellness Committee ensures there is fresh fruit and healthy snacks each week in the cafeteria. In lieu of vending machines filled with chips we get fresh apples, oranges, bananas - or whatever is in season along with healthy snacks like trail mix, dried fruit and peanut butter (which we love on our apples)! It makes us feel cared for because the company is providing good nutrition for us to help us stay healthy. There is rarely anything left over by the end of the week! The Wellness Committee also has other events throughout the year too, like free chair massages, Monthly Smoothie Tuesdays and quarterly health challenges where we can win gift cards for participation.

We asked DVL Group, Inc. for some inside information on how to get hired at the organization. Here is what they had to say.

What key characteristics tell you a prospective employee will be a great fit for your company?

The 5 key characteristics we look for in our applicants are the DVL Core Values all 83 of us already share. Demonstrated behaviors or experience with collaborating with a customer, showing care for internal and external customers, professionalism in both appearance and manners, integrity even when the customer is not looking and showing creativity in problem solving. What is even better is when the potential applicant mentions any of these values before they are addressed during the interview process. That is how we really know that he/she will fit into our customer satisfaction culture. We have customers who have been with us for over 30 years so a prospective applicant- regardless of the position - must also be passionate about providing GREAT customer satisfaction. 

What can prospective employees do to get your attention?

Applicants get our attention by demonstrating key behaviors for the job description. We spend a lot of time in discovering what will make the best applicant for a position. Once we create that job description, competencies and desired behaviors? If an applicant demonstrates them during the interview we know we have found the right one. For example, we had a position open recently. Previous experience is a must but we also were looking for someone who genuinely cared about retaining customers and working in a team environment. When the applicant unprompted - relayed a story about caring for a new customer during a project and taking initiative to do an ill coworker's part of the process that wasn’t her responsibility to keep it moving? We knew we found the right person. The applicant showed care for the customer and compassion for her coworker. 

Are there any positions or types of candidates you are particularly focused on hiring in this coming year?

We are focused on Technicians this year. We have two Power Technician openings now due to growth, and 2 HVAC Technician positions opening in the spring. We have two Senior HVAC Technicians retiring at the end of this year so we want to get the new HVAC associates up and running before the other two retire. It’s more expensive to do business that way but it comes with a lot of perks. Happier HVAC associates, who are not stressed due to being shorthanded, is the main perk! We always try to hire to build the bench, it’s another reason why we are a great place to work. We don’t wait until teams are stressed out because they are shorthanded. We do our best to stay ahead of the recruiting game.

What should interested candidates do to find out more and get started?

Our website is the best place to learn about us and our careers We are also on all the major Social Media sites. But I strongly recommend to our Technician applicants to just seek out a current Technician. Or if they are still in school, speak to their professors. We have a great reputation at all the local Tech Schools as being a Great Place to Work!
