What key characteristics tell you a prospective employee will be a great fit for your company?

We seek employees who are customer focused, can effectively collaborate, and have a passion for doing the right thing. Prospective employees need to be energized by the opportunity to make a difference and to growing their own career. We value diversity and look for individuals who bring unique experiences and perspectives to the work place so that others may benefit. And, we are a company that invests in our communities so we highly desire employees who are willing to support those efforts through volunteerism and community service.

What can prospective employees do to get your attention?

Prospective employees should want to be part of a company where the customer really matters. They need to show their ability and desire to make a difference in the lives of our customers, the business and the community through top-quality service and leadership. They should seek to understand the Discover story, mission and values, and want to become a part of it because they believe, as we do, that we can make a difference every day in some way. Talk to us about results. We seek individuals who with a proven track record of adding value by making great ideas a reality.

Are there any unusual or especially rigorous steps of your hiring process that candidates should be aware of?

Discover’s hiring process is thorough but unpretentious. For our professional positions, we require multiple interviews with a cross-section of individuals whose roles are related to the opening. Additional rounds of interviews may be required depending on the role. Interviews in these rounds may include a business case or job simulation exercise where the candidate will be asked to walk the interviewer through their approach to problem solving. In our high-volume call centers, we use a unique system where the recruiter facilitates dynamic questioning that prompts a candidate to select from various images that they most or least identify with as a way to assess the candidate’s work-style preferences and areas of interest. An additional skill attributes card sort further helps the recruiter assess the candidate’s strengths and aptitudes. Candidates indicate this unusual approach is engaging and enlightening for them and they often sight it as a major differentiator for Discover.

Are there any positions or types of candidates you are particularly focused on hiring in this coming year?

Throughout 2016, we will be looking to add top talent in our call centers on an on-going basis to support our growing customer base. We will also continue to add Risk Management, Compliance and Audit roles as we continue to strengthen our overall management framework for the enterprise. Information Security talent will be necessary to help us continue to guard against fraud. We also expect growth in our Digital Technology and Marketing, as well as Analytic and Modeling roles as we expand those areas.
