Perks and Programs

We asked Devon Energy to share a few programs they feel really capture what's unique about their workplace. Here is what they had to say.

  • Benefits and compensation package: Devon targets base salary above the median range within our peer group. In addition to base pay, all employees are eligible for an annual cash performance bonus, and more than half of all employees also receive long-term equity incentives in conjunction with the annual performance review process. Other benefits include an alternative work schedule, which allows employees to compress their 80 hours per pay period into nine days instead of 10, and a robust Employee Assistance Program, with numerous offerings including a free will, a concierge for elder care and a free phone consultation with an attorney on a variety of legal issues.
  • Fitness center reimbursement: Memberships to Devon's state-of-the-art fitness center in Oklahoma City are available to employees, spouses and dependent children ages 13 to 26 at $15 per month for an individual employee and $20 per month per family. Employees who work out five times or more per month are reimbursed quarterly, making their membership free. In the field, workout rooms are available in two of Devon’s larger field office locations: Artesia, New Mexico, and Cuero, Texas. This is in addition to the field fitness subsidy (up to $40/month for singles and families). Wellness participation options include nutrition, individual, small-group and large-group exercise, sleep, stress management, smoking cessation, weight loss and preventive health care.
  • On-site medical clinic: For Oklahoma City employees, who comprise 68 percent of Devon's U.S. workforce, the company offers an onsite medical clinic for employees and their dependents. This makes a convenient way for employees to undergo an annual wellness exam. Many employees now use the clinic's doctor as their general practitioner. In addition, the clinic offers dermatology and allergy services, allergy injections and free cancer screenings.
  • Retirement programs: Devon offers a 401(k) incentive savings plan in which employees can defer up to 50 percent of annual salary and bonus (up to the IRS maximum of $18,000). Employees can choose the option to save through a traditional pre-tax plan, a Roth plan (after tax) or a combination of both. Devon matches 100 percent of the first 3 percent of compensation an employee defers for the first four years of their employment and 100 percent of the first 6 percent thereafter. In addition, Devon offers employees an enhanced 401(k) program with a company retirement contribution. This company retirement contribution is given to all employees regardless of their participation in the optional 401(k) matching program. This provides employees with a quarterly contribution of 8 percent of compensation into their 401(k).
  • Emphasis on financial wellness: Devon's award-winning financial wellness program, free to employees, offers assistance in mastering their personal finances. Options include financial fitness assessments and follow-up phone consultations with financial experts, access to a third-party website with financial education articles, webcasts and calculators, a dedicated help line for Devon employees and on-site and web-based workshops.
  • HSA contributions: Devon contributes up to $1,500 per year into an employee's health savings account, based on completion of several wellness-centered activities, such as the person's own HSA contribution, dental and vision check-ups, annual physical, fitness challenges and safety meeting attendance.
  • Generous leave time: Devon provides between 160 and 240 hours of personal time off (PTO) per year, with the amount based on the employee's level of experience, and a roll-over equal to the employee's annual PTO allotment. An individual PTO-balance calculator helps employees determine how many remaining hours they have currently and will have at year-end for vacation-planning purposes.
  • Employee development: Devon offers an array of employee-development opportunities. As one example, to help acclimate employees to aspects of the oil and natural gas industry beyond their own expertise, Devon offers an Industry Acumen series of courses in a classroom setting. These courses provide interactive instruction on exploration, drilling and production, land and petroleum finance. Webinars and on-demand, self-paced options are available on a variety of topics including leadership, business acumen and particular skills.
  • Healthy dining discount: The company-owned cafeteria at Devon's Oklahoma City headquarters offers a 50 percent discount to employees for healthy menu choices. For example, a lunchtime option of salmon and two healthy sides is about $5 for employees.
