We asked Cumulus Networks to share a few programs they feel really capture what's unique about their workplace. Here is what they had to say.

  • Rocket Award: Rocket awards are given out on a quarterly basis usually to about 3 people for significant above and beyond contributions that enable us to dramatically accelerate our business. The award recipients are selected by the leadership team based on nominations from all employees either in recognition of a sustained contribution over time or for a meaningful one-time achievement. The award includes a jacket and a $2,500 bonus. We make an effort to distribute awards broadly across functions and geographies. Awards are given out at our monthly all hands.
  • Pay It Forward: In a startup, no one succeeds alone. Our Rocket award includes a $250 expense account for the award winner to "pay it forward" by sending a bottle of scotch, a batch of flowers, buying lunch, or sponsoring happy hour for the colleague(s) who made their award possible. We want our award winners to be able to say "Thank You" in a way that is authentic for them and their team members.
  • Medical Benefits: Not only do we pay 100% of the premiums for our health and wellness benefits for our employees and their families, for our high deductible health plan, we also fully fund the deductible amount into an HSA. This funding is the employees to keep and can ultimately be rolled over into an IRA if unused. Believe it or not, if all goes well, you can actually MAKE money on our health insurance plan.
  • Dental and Vision Benefits: Our dental and vision benefits are Insane! I'm the head of HR and literally every time I take my kids to the dentist or the orthodontist I have to convince them the benefits are real! In short, family coverage is 90% of all dental, orthodontic, and vision claims in a given year up to $9,000. Most plans cover up to $1,500 lifetime maximum for things like orthodontics or vision care. At Cumulus, our families get things like braces and lasik on us.
  • Manager Development: Our people managers set the tone for our culture and the experience our employees have working for Cumulus.  In 2018, all of our people managers are participating in a 360-degree review program that is coupled with a series of 6-8 personal and confidential individual coaching sessions.  We believe that the key difference between good leaders and great leaders is one thing:  Self Awareness.  Through this opportunity, we seek to help our managers become more self-aware, more confident, and more effective in their leadership roles. 
  • 5 Year Awards: Our CTO and Founder has, obviously, been here since day 1. He knows everyone and celebrates every individual and his or her contributions. We acknowledge all anniversaries at our monthly all hands with a toast/roast from our CEO. We specially acknowledge our 5 year awards with custom bobble-heads in each individuals likeness. These are displayed like trophies around the office. Each bobble-head is in a Cumulus jersey with the number 5 on the back in honor of 5 years!
  • Kudos: Gratitude and appreciation are a significant part of our culture. Cumulus Kudos are a simple way of saying "Thank You" to those colleagues who pitch in, solve problems, and make life easier. Anyone can send a kudos to "" with a shout out and a thank you for a job well done. These are presented and read out at our monthly all hands - often with comical photos attached!
  • Great Parties: We foster a culture of community and celebration with regular happy hours, beer bashes, and events including our annual March Madness ping pong tournament - which was the brain child of our CEO. There are two big events annually, the summer picnic and Holiday party; we are so proud to welcome our families to the events and to acknowledge that support and contributions they make to Cumulus' success.

What key characteristics tell you a prospective employee will be a great fit for your company?

The key word I look for in all interviews is "Impact".  Networking is a small industry dominated by a few massive players. When people come to Cumulus it is often because they want to have an impact, to make a difference, and to see the fruits of their labor.  Cumulus is a company of innovators and action-oriented doers.

What can prospective employees do to get your attention?

Today’s talent market is incredibly competitive, and we recognize it’s a candidates market right now.  We try to be very responsive and connect with all those who are interested in exploring opportunities at Cumulus.  We seek diversity and consider candidates at all levels.  We appreciate intelligent, hard-working, communicative team players and, for most of our roles, some experience in the networking domain is, if not required, really nice to have.  If a candidate is a clear self-starter who is driven to make a difference he or she will clearly stand out in the interview process.

Are there any positions or types of candidates you are particularly focused on hiring in this coming year?

The coming year will be one of rapid growth for Cumulus we will increase our headcount by about 45%.  Most of that growth will be in the field where we are seeking Account Executives and Systems Engineers in all regions around the globe.  We are also always hiring for the best routing, networking, and Linux talent in our engineering teams in Mountain View, North Carolina and Bangalore.
