Perks and Programs

We asked Compuware Corporation to share a few programs they feel really capture what's unique about their workplace. Here is what they had to say.

  • Culture of Innovation: Gary’s Awesome Idea: CEO Chris O'Malley cultivates a culture of innovation at Compuware. He verbally encourages employees during town hall meetings, in emails and in person, and established a “product council” as a mechanism to vet ideas and provide a method to execute those with business value. Within this culture, Software Architect Gary Michalek was inspired to come up with an idea that enhanced our existing software product Topaz for Program Analysis. Internally, this is known as “Gary’s Awesome Idea.” Gary then followed the product council process to approve the project. 84 days after the idea’s inception, the new capability was released. Gary was personally recognized by Chris at a company-wide event with an award, further reinforcing the importance of innovation at Compuware.
  • Next Generation Training: Compuware prepares our entry-level developers to succeed and become an integral part of the company by providing two months of training taught by our in-house industry experts. Each new entry-level employee is paired with a senior and peer mentor to ease the transition into corporate work. Education is continuous after the first two months of training as our new employees continue to learn from and work side-by-side with some of the best minds in the mainframe industry. Within six months of working at Compuware, our entry-level employees are not only working on, but creating innovations within our groundbreaking products. For example, one of our next-gen developers was a crucial part of developing our Runtime Visualizer capability just two months after joining the company.
  • Employee Referral Program: Compuware employees are smart, talented and passionate and so are their friends. Compuware has launched a successful employee referral program resulting in 18% of our new hires in the last year. Employees are rewarded $1,500 for non-managerial hires and $3,000 for managerial hires.
  • Internship Program: The best way to create an inspired and productive workforce is to provide hands-on industry experience to students before they graduate. Compuware’s internship program is a 12-week immersive experience in the software industry. After a week of training, interns work collaboratively with each other and their Compuware guides to complete a real-world project with business value. Interns work on projects, such as developing the user interface for a Compuware product, that are released to customers or are incorporated into crucial internal development processes. Compuware also ensures that interns have a life outside of the office by providing housing in Midtown, one of Detroit’s up-and-coming neighborhoods. Interns also participate in a summer social program built specifically to allow the cities’ interns to network.
  • On-site Perks and Programs: Our Detroit headquarters offers a variety of on-site benefits. The on-site Wellness Center offers enormous benefits to employees and their spouses. The Center includes a wide range of physical and educational opportunities to create a healthy work/life balance. It features the latest cardiovascular equipment, two weight rooms, a racquetball court, a gymnasium, a spinning room, an aerobic/yoga/Pilates studio, an elevated track and locker rooms with free amenities. Employees also enjoy amenities in the local downtown Detroit area, including free parking on the weekends for ice skating, summer concerts in the park and local sporting and entertainment events. Additionally, Compuware offers a very high-quality, subsidized childcare center for children ages six weeks to pre-Kindergarten. New mothers can also use a private lactation room.
  • Valuable Benefits Program: Employees are provided one of the most comprehensive benefit packages in the industry. We offer three choices of medical plans (Standard Plan, Consumer Plan and an HMO for CA residents), Prescription drug plan, Dental and Vision coverage, flexible spending accounts, short/long-term disability coverage and life and AD&D insurance. Our “Cigna Behavioral Health” EAP provides a complete range of confidential services designed to help employees balance work and personal lives. We offer a Telehealth program through American Well as part of our medical plan for covered employees and their dependents. This program allows employees to quickly and securely connect with licensed physicians for live video visits 24/7/365. Compuware also offers a 401(k) match up to a 2% maximum matching contribution of eligible earnings.
  • Compuware C.A.N. (Community Action Network): Giving back has been ingrained in Compuware's culture since our founding in 1973. We are proud to support employees who help others through various community programs. Notable events include our annual bottle drive where employees donate returnable bottles throughout the year with refunds going to our annual holiday Adopt-A-Family program; fundraisers for Ronald McDonald House Detroit; Forgotten Harvest Warehouse Re-pack events; and a “Fill-the-school Backpack” drive. Compuware's Technology Department also manages a "convenience store" that raises money for local charities by selling snacks to employees at a small profit. The store has raised $34,000+ since 2007 and donates to local charities like Alternatives for Girls, St. Al's Community Outreach Center, Core City Neighborhoods and Freedom House.
  • Celebrating as a Company: Compuware celebrates individual, team and company successes on a regular basis. Over the past year, we held four company-wide potlucks celebrating quarterly product releases. We also honored our Veterans with a Veterans’ Day ceremony that included a personal thank you from our CEO and a speech by each of our Veterans about what serving our country meant to them. All Detroit employees attended the event and our remote Veterans were able to attend via Skype. We also celebrate long-time employee retirements by gathering to hear a special recognition from our CEO and eat a delicious treat. We also host fun, themed events such as “PI Day” (March 14) with a pie potluck and Cinco de Mayo complete with all the best Mexican fare.
  • Industry-leading Time-off Program: Compuware offers an industry-leading time off program. Employees with less than 5 years of service receive 15 vacation days per year. Employees who have between 5 and up to 10 years of service receive 20 vacation days per year. Employees who have 10 years or more of service receive 25 vacation days per year. If an employee is re-hired, they receive credit for prior years of service. In addition, Compuware offers nine paid holidays, including one floating holiday. There is no set limit to the amount of sick and/or personal time an employee may take, it is managed between the employee and their manager based on situations that arise.
  • Service Recognition Program: Compuware is a 43-year-old company with many long-time service employees; currently the average tenure is 15 years. We are proud to have such long-serviced employees and greatly appreciate their dedication through our Service Recognition Program. Compuware recognizes one, three and five year milestones as well as every five-year increment beyond that. One and three year celebrants receive a commemorative anniversary plaque (includes a plaque and a congratulatory message). Beginning with five years of service, celebrants select a gift from the Compuware Service Award Center. Gift selections are based on the number of years of service the employee is celebrating.
