Perks and Programs

We asked CoBank to share a few programs they feel really capture what's unique about their workplace. Here is what they had to say.

  • GEM Peer Recognition: This special peer-to-peer recognition program, which stands for Going the Extra Mile, allows every CoBank associate to give two $250 awards to colleagues every year (award is after taxes, so total is over $400 before taxes!). Awards are entirely at the associate's discretion; no approval/review process is required which puts the power of recognition in associates' hands. The only rule is you can't give an award to someone who is above you in your management chain. There is no participation cutoff, so even late year hires get the chance to recognize their colleagues who have gone the extra mile.
  • $500 Self-Directed Contribution: Every year, each CoBank associate may request that $500 of the bank's money be donated to a charitable organization of the associate's choosing. CoBank's Associate Directed Contribution program is an important part of the bank's multi-faceted corporate citizenship efforts. Through the program, associates may direct the full $500 amount to a single organization, or divide it between two non-profits. There is no employee contribution component of this program; it is simply a $500 annual benefit donated on behalf of the associate.
  • Paid Volunteer Day Off: We believe in being a good corporate citizen. To make it easy for our associates to support nonprofit organizations that help sustain the communities where we live and work, we offer each associate with an opportunity for one to two paid days off to volunteer with the charitable organization of their choice. CoBank volunteers have taught underserved youth life skills, sorted and packed foodstuffs, built homes, served meals, packed medical supplies, chaperoned school field trips, among many other community activities.
  • Summer Intern Program: Every year we hire up to 30 interns to work in our Denver and banking center locations. Our intern program is best in class, with interns travelling to our corporate office to participate in a capstone presentation of their summer project to executives and others in the bank. Many of our interns convert to full time or return for a second internship with us.
  • Connection Cafe with Executives: We are proud of our CoBank Connection Café program, where our top executives invite a small number of associates (about 12) to an informal lunch or breakfast gathering with the objective of simply getting to know each other. Invitations are made at random, and there is no prescribed agenda. These sessions give the executive team a chance to spend time with associates who they might not otherwise know, and associates are given the chance to get to know an executive on a personal level. In our banking centers, executive Connection visits are often linked to a community or team building event as well.
  • Human Equity Committees: We believe in the power of human equity, which means that we value the different skills, experiences, and talents that each associate brings to work. Our associates help to build an equitable environment through their service on cross-functional and multi-level executive sponsored committees that are focused on one of four key areas including: Leadership, Culture and Environment, Talent Acquisition and Retention, and Rewards and Recognition. These teams are empowered to build programs that make every day life at the bank better. They have introduced parental leave, work-life integration, service awards, trust workshops, jeans Fridays, open houses, and many other programs that have helped to make CoBank a great place to work.
  • Paid Parental Leave: We believe that it is important to support our associates during every phase of employment, and that includes being both an employee, and a parent. Every associate is eligible to receive two weeks of paid leave during the first year following the birth or adoption of a child. This paid leave may be used incrementally, or all at once.
  • Transit Options: Associates at our corporate headquarters receive a free EcoPass that allows them free access to all of the city's transit resources including light rail, transit to the airport, local and regional buses, and park and rides. All associates receive free covered parking, and our headquarters building is also equipped with 8 outlets for electric vehicles and locked individual bicycle storage units.
  • Work-Life Integration: CoBank appreciates the fact that each associate has a unique set of life circumstances. In order to maintain an environment where our associates can fully engage and perform their job responsibilities at their best, CoBank provides workplace and time flexibility options. We recognize that every job is different, and that the options for flexibility aren’t going to be the same for everyone. Examples of flexible work arrangements associates may request include part-time employment, job sharing, phased retirement, flexible scheduling during the workday, temporary remote work as needed, and ongoing remote work arrangements.
  • Amenities and Fitness Center: Key features of our building include an outdoor dining veranda outside of our subsidized cafeteria offering a great daily breakfast and lunch with live grill stations, made-to order meals, onsite catering, and a large selection of healthy choices. Aside from individual work stations, we have built numerous flexible collaborative spaces so that work can be done in a style and comfort that suits associate and business needs. For health and mindfulness, we offer a state of the art onsite fitness center and a meditation room.
