Perks and Programs

We asked Cisco to share a few programs they feel really capture what's unique about their workplace. Here is what they had to say.

  • Connected Recognition: Thank you means so much more when it comes from your peers. Unlike other awards that come from the top, 80 percent of our recognition comes from each other through our Connected Recognition program. There’s no long, drawn-out process, so people get the thanks they deserve right away. No approval is required for gifts under $100, and employees can give rewards with higher value, up to $2,000, with a manager’s approval. Anyone can nominate someone they think embodies our culture to connect everything, innovate everywhere and benefit everyone. So everyone becomes part of the rewards process, not just our leaders. On average 54,000 employees are recognized by their leaders and peers through Connected Recognition every year.
  • LifeConnections Health and Fitness Center: Our largest US campus sites have Cisco LifeConnections Health and Fitness Centers where our people can stay healthy and recharge. The 24,000 square-foot facility in San Jose has medical offices, a pharmacy, vision center, dental center and fitness center all under one room. At our fitness center, employees can get everything from massage therapy and pilates to coaching and nutrition counseling. And because we’re Cisco, our employees like to geek out when they workout by creating their own workout experience with customized displays, personalized training programs and virtual outdoor training scenarios. Their training data and preferences are all stored in the cloud, so employees can access the info whenever and wherever they like.
  • Flexible Work Arrangements: Balancing all of life’s responsibilities and joys is personal to every individual. There’s no “one size fits all.” That’s why work-life balance at Cisco is at the discretion of each employee and his or her manager. We give our employees the tools and technologies to work anywhere, anytime. More than 70 percent of our employees use this benefit and work from both their home and office on a regular basis. For instance, the Network Virtual Office lets employees work from home—over a secured connection— with all the tools they have in the office. It’s like your office cube teleported to your living room.
  • Time2Give: We know employees want to make a difference in the world. Our Employees told us they wanted more time and flexibility to volunteer, and we gave it to them! Through Time2Give, each employee gets five days per year—fully paid—to volunteer for the cause(s) of their choice. Plus, for every hour they volunteer with a Cisco Foundation-approved nonprofit, Cisco donates $10 to that cause. In fiscal year 2016, Cisco employees volunteered more than 187,000 hours, resulting in more than $1.47 million in matching gifts to nonprofit partners.
  • Birthday Day Off: At Cisco, we know that sometimes it’s the little things that make a world of difference in the lives of our employees. How about making your birthday your own personal holiday? All employees are able to take a day off, with pay, up to 10 calendar days before or after their birthday. All employees need to do is tell their manager what day they’ll be taking off. Some employees have celebrated by kayaking, going to the movies with family or relaxing by the beach.
  • Corporate Social Responsibility: We all know how huge a role technology plays in uncovering solutions to the world’s toughest challenges. This is why our CSR programs focus on giving our customers, our partners, and especially our employees a leg up to generate innovative solutions that make the world a better place. Some examples of how we give back are our Networking Academy which provides approximately $230 million of in-kind support annually to 9,500 educational institutions in 170 countries; our veterans programs that focus on military to civilian transition and a mentoring program for professional support and networking opportunities; and our environmental sustainability programs that provide 336 electric vehicle charging stations at our five major US Cisco campuses helping more than 2,200 employees have a greener commute.

How to Get Hired

We asked Cisco for some inside information on how to get hired at the organization. Here is what they had to say.

What key characteristics tell you a prospective employee will be a great fit for your company?

At Cisco, we seek dreamers, doers, and creators. Because innovation starts with people, we want the bold ones who can learn and evolve to reach their highest potential. Those who are proactive, self-starters, with a go-make-it-happen mentality thrive within our Connect Everything, Innovate Everywhere, and Benefit Everyone culture. We seek talent that is professionally and personally strong in both hard and soft skills. Sure, each role has its specific tasks, but we look beyond for high achievers who always ask, “What could be?” Individuals who are strong communicators, who focus on building relationships, and who create lasting impact from day one. Our best employees are those who can create and harness the potential of teams and lead others to success. We believe a diversity of ideas adds incredible value. So bring on those team builders and risk-takers.

What can prospective employees do to get your attention?

Be proactive. Stand out. Show us how you shine. Don’t just submit an application—connect with us through our social media platforms to build your understanding of our company and our culture. We want to know you—and you to know us—so tell us what matters most to you in a work environment. Because we want to work together for the long run. We encourage all prospective employees to engage with us beyond the application and before the interview process event begins. Curiosity and courage pay off here. Go ahead, put your best foot forward. We’re ready to be impressed.

Are there any positions or types of candidates you are particularly focused on hiring in this coming year?

We make a lot of products, to say the least. With the breadth of our technology portfolio, the range of roles we recruit for is vast. We take pride in hiring individuals from diverse professional backgrounds regardless of gender, ethnicity, or disability. We’re proud to provide an environment where all employees feel accepted, accommodated, and supported, and where they want to grow and develop. Because we focus on software-related technology, our need for software specialists keeps growing. That said, delivering software technology depends on our core business areas where we continue to add expertise. On the sales side, we’re always open to candidates who can engage at an enterprise level and articulate the value of Cisco solutions beyond just the product. Come sell us on what you can do.

What should interested candidates do to find out more and get started?

To kick-start your recruiting process, visit Cisco’s career page (http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/about/careers.html) to explore all our open positions. We encourage candidates to get inspired by company culture and employee stories on our Life at Cisco blog. Then, go social. Use the hashtag #wearecisco on social media sites—Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat—and see Cisco through the eyes of our employees. The #wearecisco tribe is like one big, techie family that likes building things to change the world while having fun. That means being proactive goes a long way at Cisco, so reaching out to our recruiters casts you in a good light. We also partner with universities across the U.S. to hire undergrads, masters, MBAs, and Ph.D.s to build a strong, diverse workforce. Whether you’re still in school or a recent grad, speak with your university’s career center to learn more.
