  • CarMax in The Community: The CarMax Foundation’s giving and volunteer activities are rooted in the passion of the Associates. Volunteer team-builders are scheduled with nonprofits chosen by the local stores based on the causes most important to them. Associates have their personal volunteer time and dollars matched through the Matching Gifts program. Grants in CarMax’s communities are made at the recommendation of local Associates. Board Service grants are also available to nonprofits that have a CarMax Associate serving on a governing, advisory or young professional board. CarMax is committed to providing community support and career opportunities to our military and their families. CarMax and The CarMax Foundation have pledged a total of $1.4 million over the next three years to organizations supporting the military.
  • President’s Club: CarMax recognizes top store Associates through membership in Director’s Club and President’s Club. Associates aspire to achieve this prestigious honor, which includes being recognized at company meetings and demo cars at certain levels of accomplishment.  In addition, each fall, President’s Club members, along with a guest, are invited to a formal recognition gala in Las Vegas with the senior management team. The event includes dinner, dancing, and special entertainment, with all travel arrangements and an overnight stay provided.
  • Steak Cookouts: To celebrate stores’ strong performances, the CarMax senior executive team travels to various locations across the country to host a steak cookout. The executives grill out for the entire store to thank them for their hard work. In addition to a celebratory meal, the store Associates lead activities that allow the executives to get to know them. Activities can include things like pick-up basketball games, luaus, and award presentations.
  • Above and Beyond Awards: When a CarMax Associate helps a customer or a co-worker, and their efforts and results are nothing short of inspiring, they can be nominated for the Above & Beyond award. Above & Beyond winners are selected each month, and receive a cash bonus, a congratulatory letter from the CEO and a celebration event for their entire store.
  • Associate Discount Policy: Associates, as well as immediate family members receive discounts on CarMax vehicles, accessories, extended service plans and vehicle service. Associate discounts are also available through several national fitness chains, day care programs and various community events.
  • Disaster Relief Benefits: The CarMax Associate Disaster Relief Fund is a charitable fund established to provide assistance to CarMax Associates who have been directly impacted by a natural disaster (i.e., hurricanes, earthquakes, tornadoes, and floods), or who have been seriously impacted by an unexpected financial hardship (i.e., death of an immediate family member, health issues resulting in catastrophic medical costs, etc.).

Are there any positions or types of candidates you are particularly focused on hiring in this coming year?

In store locations, the majority of open positions are in Sales, with additional positions in Service (detailers, experienced technicians), Purchasing and the Business Office. Positions range from full and part-time positions, with day and evening shifts available.  At our home office in Richmond, VA, CarMax has focus on hiring for digital and technology positions. Open technology and digital positions include a range of roles such as application architects, UX designers, security analysts and software developers. They will be charged with using innovative technology to enhance the e-commerce capabilities that CarMax offers customers.
